ONLINE ACTIVITY 2 – CWTS101

CHAPTER 3: DIMENTION OF DEVELOPMENT

By: Keneth Camat Carreon

A. What are the NSTP-CWTS dimensions of development? Discuss each.

1. Safety and Security - it involves disaster preparedness and management in
times of life-threatening events such as fire, earthquake or other calamities
that needs immediate response from trained civilians. This involves first aids
and basic lifesaving seminar, fire and earthquake drills, discussion of do’s and
don’ts during emergency and the like are some of these examples.

2. Education - it basically aims to support and promote education for the

community through enhancement and usage of institutional support materials
and facilities. It involves providing materials about basic literacy skills for
kids on pre-school, ALS (Alternative Learning System) for out-of-school
youths and adults, mathematics and science tutorials and extended services of
skilled students.

3. Recreation - it involves facilitating of sports fest, parlor games for street

children and painting activities that nourishes the youth’s social skills and
capacities to relate with one another in the community.

4. Values Formation and Moral Recovery – it aims to develop the youth to be

responsible individuals embodied with good morals and ignite their passion in
active participation for the development and prosperity of the community. It
also prepares as the future good leaders of our nation.

5. Industry and Entrepreneurship - includes programs and activities that are

vital to economic growth. CWTS students demonstrate technical skills in
communities like meat processing, silkscreen making and how to establish
small business.
6. Care for Health - aims to give knowledge on medical-related fields and
extend health services needed in the community. It includes medical services
like first-aid operation, vaccination, information dissemination, basic
lifesaving seminars, heath / nutrition technical assistance and training of youth
to be first aid assistants.

7. Environment - area inculcates environmental awareness and its contribution

to health and related fields. It involves management of waste, environmental
protection, dissemination and application of technologies supportive of the
community needs and livelihood activities related to environment and other
related fields supportive of the national thrust.

B. Define the following:

1. Camps Security - is a system established to protect the assets of the
institution and the members of the academic community. It refers to the
protection of the physical plant and facilities of the institution, personnel,
students, records and formulation and implementation of security plans and
programs for the safety and protection of the entire community in campus.

2. Physical Security - involves the protection of the physical plant, facilities and
members of the academic community.

3. Document Security - involves the proper classification and security of

records/documents, hard copies or files stored in computers of the institution.

4. Personnel Security - involves security measures such as security education

program for personnel, personnel identification system and conduct of
background checks on applicant.
5. Student Security - includes security education program for students, anti-
drug abuse campaign, student identification system, crowd control during
major student activities.

6. Events and VIP Security - consist of measures such as site security, crowd
control, VIP security and security of celebrity/controversial personality.

C. Give your insights on the following (in your own words):

1. Press release given by NSO: An update to the 2003 Functional Literacy,
Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS).
- Literacy rate is one of the most important measurement of a nation’s
progress. In the press release by NSO last 2010, the literacy rate among
Filipinos is 86.67% or approximately 9 out of 10 Filipinos are functionally
literate (meaning they can write, read, compute and comprehend). It’s
actually good to hear that a lot of Filipinos are functionally literate
because it only implies that the government is doing measures to ensure
that every Filipinos are learning. But to be honest, I’m not satisfied with
this result because it only means that there are still Filipinos who can’t
read, write, compute and comprehend. And as long as there are Filipinos
who are illiterate, there’s nothing to celebrate of. Look at Japan, they have
100% literacy rate which means that there is no Japanese who can’t read
or write. If Japanese government was able to make it possible in their
country, how come our government can’t? I know they are doing their best
to ensure that everyone is learning but their best wasn’t good enough. Our
government should ensure that all of the Filipinos are illiterate by building
more schools especially to remote areas. In this year, I think we are on the
right track towards a vision 100% literate Filipinos through the
implementations of the free tertiary education on SUC’s.
2. The two (2) recreational methodologies that are commonly used strategies of
MAPUA-CWTS.

A. Workshop – In this method, group of people bind with common

interest or problems work together to improve their individual
efficiency, ability or understanding either by study or by discussion. I
think it is more effective because it doesn’t only improve their
individual efficiency but their social skills and how they interact with
one another.
B. Demonstration – It is a method of explaining ideas, concepts, skills,
processes or techniques by showing and demonstrating these to the
participants. I think this is a good method as well but less effective
than workshop because it requires less participation from youth. And
the lesser the participation of the youth, the lesser the chance they will
stay focus and learn.

3. The two (2) Value Formation and Moral Recovery Methodologies used by
MAPUA-CWTS. Select which is more efficient and explain why?
- I think Role Playing is more efficient than Structured Learning
exercise because it requires more active participation from youth. We all
know that youth today has a very short attention span, meaning to say they
are more prone to distraction and find it difficult to focus on one task. And
since Role Playing not only requires them to think but also to move their
body, they could give their full attention on what they are doing. In
addition, I think it is more enjoyable to act than just plain thinking and
when a person enjoy what he is doing, he learns more.
4. The Mapua Core Values. As a student, what other values that you may
suggest?
 Passion – Being mapuan is never an easy thing. There would be a lot
struggles to come on your way but as long as you have passion on
what you are doing, you can overcome those. As they say, the best
way to excel on something is to love what you are doing.
 Resiliency – In our journey of being in Mapua University, there would
be some points where we will experience failures, rejections and
struggles. Being able to stand up and continue your way after those
experiences will drive you towards success. As they saying goes, the
moment you give up is the moment you lose.
 Optimism – In tough times, always look at the brighter side of the
day. Always hope for the brighter future. Wearing your smiles even
during exam weeks could make a difference in other people, it could
brighten them up when their mood is down.

5. The Corporate Responsibility (CSR) in the Philippines

- It good to hear that corporations and private companies are not
only into earning profit but also in reaching out to their respective
communities. I think it is justifiable that these corporations use a portion
of their profit in improving the community in where do they business as a
means of giving back to their customers because without them, there
business will buried six-feet below the ground. Also, it is just and fair that
these corporations are giving back to their employees by providing
company houses, educational assistance for their children, and company
benefits. They should really treat their employees as their assets because
they are the one who give life to their business. After all, what they will
spend to these good deeds are just a small portion of a big income they
earn because of these people.
6. The causes of malnutrition in the Philippines. As a student, what can you
suggest to our government in order to solve this kind of problems?

As a student, I suggest these things to solve malnutrition in the Philippines.

 Help our local farmers – If your help our local farmers, the industry
of production food will be sufficient to support every Filipino. Thus,
malnutrition will be eradicated and our economy will grow as well.
 Create more jobs and opportunity – one of the reason why there’s a
lot of malnourished children in our country is due to high
unemployment rate. If you provide at least one job to every family,
they don’t have the reason not to eat nutritious food anymore.
 Promotion of proper nutrition – vegetables and fruits are only some
of the nutritious food that we often neglect in our kitchen, we prefer
processed foods which makes us insufficient to nutrition that our body
should have. In line with this, proper dissemination of information is
needed.
