3. Safety Precautions

Please observe the following precautions to ensure the safety of service engineers as well as operators
when using this system.

DANGER: Do not use flammable gases such as anesthetics, or flammable liquids such
as ethanol, near this product, because there is danger of explosion.

WARNING: 1. Information concerning the terminal to which the potential equalization

conductor is to be connected ( ):

To use another medical device in combination with this system, an

equipotential wire for connecting to an equipotential bus must be
supplied. For more information, contact your TOSHIBA representative.

* Be sure to connect the potential-equalization lead wire before inserting

the equipment power plug into the receptacle. Also, be sure to remove
the equipment power plug from the receptacle before disconnecting
the wire to avoid electrical shock.

2. Information concerning the functional earth terminal

( ):

Use of the functional earth terminal as protective earth is not allowed in

Europe. The system should be connected according to local
requirements.

3. Do not connect this system to outlets with the same circuit breakers and
fuses that control current to devices such as life-support systems. If this
system malfunctions and generates an overcurrent, or when there is an
instantaneous current at power ON, the circuit breakers and fuses of the
building’s supply circuit may be tripped.

4. Do not connect to the system transducers other than those specified by

TOSHIBA, to prevent accidents such as fire.

5. Do not subject the transducers to knocks. Use of defective transducers

may cause an electric shock.

6. Before removing the main unit cover and starting work, be sure to turn
OFF the main switch of the power supply panel on the rear of the system,
disconnect the power cord from the outlet, and allow the system to
discharge for at least 1 minute. If work is performed without discharging
the system, there is a danger of electric shock.

S-2

the system, possibly causing injury.

4. To prevent electric shock, do not connect the peripheral units (video printer,
VCR, etc.) to an external outlet. Peripheral units should be connected to the
service outlet of the system or the optional isolation transformer. For the
connection procedures, contact your TOSHIBA representative.

5. The service outlet of the main unit is intended solely for recommended
peripheral units. Do not connect devices other than recommended
peripheral units to the service outlet. Connecting devices other than those
recommended may cause the consumption current to exceed the power
capacity of the main unit, possibly resulting in malfunction.

6. Do not place any objects on top of the monitor. They may fall, causing
injury.

7. Do not allow fluids such as water to contact the system or peripheral

devices. Electric shock may result.

8. Do not handle the system with wet or moist hands. Electric shock may
result.

9. Be sure to turn OFF the power breaker and disconnect the mains plug from
the outlet before removing the covers of the main unit and performing
internal wiring.

10. Wear protective gloves to ensure safety and prevent infection when
performing unit replacement, board replacement, internal wiring, or cleaning.

11. When discarding any part of this system, follow all applicable local
regulations.

1.10.1 Outline

The test system is used to identify defective sections of the system. The following sections can
be checked for defects.

(1) CPU section : DIGITAL PWB

(2) DSC section : DIGITAL PWB

(3) T&R section : PBCNN1 PWB

PULSER PWB
RECEIVER PWB

(4) PANEL

(5) MAINTENANCE

Test results are displayed as error codes or patterns that provide information for
determining whether each section is defective.

Testing is mainly performed for the CPU, DSC, T&R, and PANEL.
The main systems for imaging can be checked, although not all units are covered. The
identification of defective sections is simplified during troubleshooting, reducing work time.

For maintenance service work, it is possible to detect loss of performance due to defects in
the ultrasound transmission/reception system that are difficult to detect in routine
examinations or abnormalities related to addresses.

The number of cycles of testing can also be specified to allow problems that occur rarely
due to memory errors to be detected.

1.13 Data in the Filing Unit

Overall folder structure of the filing unit

• The filing unit uses the Linux OS and therefore there is no concept of "drive".

• The filing unit has a single partition and the folder structure described below.

Folder Description
Contains Jpeg database files.
/database
File name: dir.db
Contains the stored jpeg files.
A subfolder is created with the same name as the stored
ID. Subfolders with names representing the dates
(YYYYMMDD) are created under the ID subfolder, and
image files with names representing the times
(HHMMSS.jpg) are created under the Date subfolders.
/jpeg
Example: ID : AAA
Date : November 4, 2004
Time : 1:22:33
If a file with the above conditions is saved, the file name
will be:
/jpeg/AAA/20041104/012233.jpg
This folder is used to decompress the data to be backed
/tmp jpeg IMAGE
up to CD-R.

1.14 Software

The software for Famio 5 is based on JustVision (SSA-320A/SSA-325A). The new and modified
functions are described below.

(1) Display of MI/TI values

The MI, TIS, TIB, and TIC values are calculated and displayed. P-VOLT in the Preset menu
has been removed.

(2) Modified operating panel and improved operability

• The Position/Expand switch has been changed to a Depth/Zoom switch. When this switch
is pressed and the Zoom LED is lit, image zooming is possible. (In the JustVision, the
Multi encoder was used for image zooming.)

• The gain encoder has been changed to the palm controller.

(Hardware change. The software has not been changed.)

• The Multi encoder is now used to adjust acoustic power, the color pallet, and the angle
position.

• The UF6 key is provided as the Store key. The default setting of the UF6 key is "Print B",
and the default setting for "Print B" is "Filing Unit".

• When the measurement, Body Mark, or Annotation function is started for a zoomed image
and then that function is turned OFF, the zoomed image is restored and zoom control is
possible again using the encoder.

• The filing unit is supported, and as a result the image recording MO unit is no longer
supported.

(3) Safety measures for measurement etc.

• To prevent an unset measurement being set due to unintentional user operation (starting
the Report screen for example), measurement is canceled automatically if another function
is started before the measurement is set.

• The marks indicating the maximum and minimum values are displayed on the Worksheet
screen for OB measurement.

• When Auto Average is preset, the average mark is displayed on the Report screen to
indicate that the averaged values are displayed.

• The edit mark is added to the values edited or manually entered using the Edit function
and the calculation results based on those values, so that the user can distinguish the
edited or manually entered values from the actually measured ones.

• A guide to indicate the number of measurements used to calculate the AFI value is
displayed.

• The date input guide of the preset format is displayed for entry of obstetric date information.

• Data entry can be canceled in this system. In addition, the confirmation message
displayed when [ALL CLEAR] is selected for an OB measurement is displayed for other
application measurements to allow user confirmation before executing [ALL DELETE].

2. TROUBLESHOOTING

2.1 System Functions

(1) ISO-TRANS unit/power unit

The AC input is supplied to the power supply unit through the ISO-TRANS unit. To the
peripheral units, the power is supplied via the external output (isolation). The power unit
outputs ±5 V, ±12 V, and VH for the analog system and +5 V and +12 V for the digital system.

(2) T&R PWB

(a) PB-CNN : Connects the transducer connector and the PULSER PWB by the PWB.

(b) PULSER : Generates the ultrasound transmission high-voltage pulse and amplifies
the received ultrasound signals by the control data from the RECEIVER
PWB.

(c) RECEIVER : Performs phasing/addition and other signal processing for the received
signals after they are amplified in the PULSER PWB and then outputs
the echo signals to the DIGITAL PWB. This PWB has the MTX-SW, R-
DELAY, ECHO-FILTER, and RECEIVER T/R CONT functions.

(3) DIGITAL PWB

The DIGITAL PWB consists of a single PWB.

This PWB has the DSC-IO, DSC-FM, CPU, PANEL-IF, RPG, and STC functions.

(4) Keyboard

The keyboard is controlled by the CPU. Data transmission/reception is performed by

interrupting the CPU using the key switch control IC, gain, IP, or freeze switch.
The LED is turned ON/OFF according to the status signal from the IO PWB.
A buzzer is generated when an interrupt is transmitted to the CPU.

(5) ECG unit (option)

The output of the ECG amplifier is sent to the DIGITAL PWB by the PPM only in M mode.
The ECG output is added to the echo signals on the DIGITAL PWB and the ECG waveform is
displayed on M mode images.

(6) RS-232C

The system is provided with an RS-232C-IF channel for data transmission/reception with an
external computer.

(7) Transducer selector (option)

After this option is installed, two transducers can be connected to the system (only one
transducer can be connected in the standard configuration).

(8) Image memory (option)

A minimum of 32 frames can be read. Cine loop playback and frame-feed playback are
possible.

(9) Filing unit (option)

This option can record and file image data electronically.

2.3 Troubleshooting Related to Power Supply

The test program installed in the system operates on the premise that the power supply unit,
operating panel, monitor, and software are functioning normally. This subsection describes the
troubleshooting procedures related to the power supply and problems that cannot be checked by
the test program.

(1) Push-type breakers are used for the power unit and the ISO-TRANS unit. These breakers
are set to OFF by pushing the knob.

(2) A short-circuit protection circuit is installed in the output (secondary side) of the power unit. If
this circuit detects an abnormality in the output of the power unit, it turns OFF all of the power
supplies and stops the internal fans.

(3) When troubleshooting is completed, wait for at least 5 minutes before turning the system
power ON again.

reception circuit for processing the signals received by the transducer, and a control system.

The transmission circuit system contains 24 pulser channels for array phasing. The reception
circuit system contains a reception circuit for B/M mode (ECHO-FILTER, LOG AMP, wave
detector, etc.).

(2) Signal flow in the T&R unit

(a) Transmission circuit system

T&R CONT on the RECEIVER PWB of the T&R unit reads out the transmission delay
data from the raster data sent from the DSC unit. The transmission delay data is
transferred to the T-DELAY gate array IC on the PULSER PWB within the rate blanking
period through the data bus (TDLDB). The T-DELAY gate array IC counts TCK0
(15-MHz and 20-MHz burst waves) generated in the DSC unit, and outputs the trigger
signal for transmission after the time set by the delay data has elapsed. The trigger
signal causes PULSER to start conversion of the received data into high-voltage pulses,
and the piezoelectric elements inside the transducer are excited by the high-voltage
pulses through the high-voltage switch and the PBCNN1 PWB.

(b) Reception circuit system

The signal received from the piezoelectric elements passes through the high-voltage
switch on the PULSER PWB, and is amplified by the PRE AMP. The PRE AMP
performs gain control according to time (depth) using the PRE STC CONT to prevent
downstream circuits from being saturated by the strong echo signals in the near field.
The output signals from the PRE AMP are rearranged so that the focus patterns are
constant using the MTX SWT on the RECEIVER PWB and pairs of two symmetrical
channels with the same amount of delay are added and input to R-DELAY. For
focusing, the delay lines delay the 12-channel echo signals resulting from addition so
that the wavefronts of the signals are brought into phase and then added. At this time,
the odd-stage signals of the DVAF are received during the ODD rate and even-stage
signals are received during the EVEN rate alternately in order to enable dynamic
focusing upon reception for output. This reception delay data is transferred from T&R
CONT to R-DELAY during blanking of DFCK.

The output signal from R-DELAY is sent to RECEIVER for B/M display. In the ECHO
FILTER circuit, the signal sent to RECEIVER adjusts the center frequency of the band-
pass filter in terms of time (depth) to improve the resolution and S/N ratio. DETECTOR
checks the signal and adjusts the gain to output it to the DIGITAL PWB after it has
passed through the LOG AMP. Gain adjustment is performed using the STC signal
generated at the DIGITAL PWB.

(b) Generates the address data for frame memory.

(c) Controls up/down movement of the position.

(d) Generates the combination focus and screens for T-PDF.

(e) Controls the maximum process.

(f) Generates test signals.

(g) Data interface for image memory

(2) Operation

(a) A/D

Converts the echo signals from the T&R unit into 15-MHz, 6-bit digital signals. The
earlier stage of the A/D section generates test signals synchronized and non-
synchronized with RATE displayed during DSC testing.

(b) Input Buffer

Data that has undergone A/D conversion is written into two 8-Kbyte line memories
alternately at 15 MHz after the maximum process. The area of the line memories
into which data is written is controlled for each RATE according to the combination
focus and the status of T-PDF, and when one raster is covered, screen synthesis is
completed.

Data stored in line memories are read by VECTOR RAM and position movement
data and transferred to the DSC-FM section at 3 MHz after address control.

(c) VECTOR RAM

A 64-Kbyte VECTOR RAM stores all vector data for one transducer transferred from
the CPU. These vector data are read for each RATE and accumulated for addition to
generate addresses of frame memory.
