History:
The story of 'Servis' begins with a group of friends - young, energetic, fresh from college -
who established Service Industries more than 50 years ago.
The Servis tale goes back to 1941 when a group of young energetic college friends,
Ch. Nazar Muhammad (Late), Ch. Muhammad Hussain (Late) and Ch. Muhammad Saeed
(Late) from Punjab, Pakistan, joined hands together to translate their idea into reality.
Today, the idea is known as Servis Industries Limited.
1941:
They started their business of manufacturing handbags and sports
goods, at a small scale in Lahore. Initially the target market was
limited to Lahore and surrounding areas, but as the demand increased,
the supplies spread throughout India.
1954:
A shoe manufacturing plant was established at the industrial area in
Gulberg, Lahore with a plan to manufacture various kinds of shoes.
But considering the environmental hazards for growing urbanization,
the plant was later shifted to Gujrat.
1958:
Service Sales Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd., (SSC) the group’s marketing company was
established in 1958. Humility, fairness and respect were the core values among the
founders. Over the years, these values led towards phenomenal
success of the company.
1968:
The production side of the company flourished into Service Industries
Limited (SIL) having world-class shoes, tyres, and tubes
manufacturing facilities in Gujrat and Muridke. SIL went public in
1968.
2005:
SIL launched a domestic pharmacy chain called Servaid. Currently,
with twenty four outlets across Punjab, Servaid is serving 10,000
customers per day.
2013:
SSC is the largest retailer and distributor of footwear in Pakistan with 400 plus stores and
20,000 dealers both domestic and international. A humble venture of friends has grown
into a group that makes a difference in millions of lives every day.

SIL has pioneered the industry for Tyres & Tubes manufacturing in Pakistan since 1970

Markets for tyres and tubes of service industry

Service Tyres BBA Page 9

Markets for tyres and tubes of service industries limited are divided into two kinds and
these markets are

1. Replacement market

2. Original equipment market (OEM)

1. Replacement market:

This market is simply for common consumer. Common customers are the targeted through
dealers and retailers. Dealers and retailers are the marketing channels. Service sales
corporation receives the demands from its dealers and retailers which are all over in
Pakistan and hence this demand is send to the factories and accordingly production is made.

Normally only one dealer is allowed by service industries in one division and if any other
is interested to get dealership of service industries then it can possible with the consent of
existing dealer. its mean new dealer can start business with service industries only
allowance of existing dealer which is working in same division and that dealer will be the
responsible if any kind of problem or fraud is committed by the new dealer.

In replacement market price of the products are standardized. Dealers send their demands
to SSC and they get supply of products at standardized prices.

2. Original Equipment Market (OEM):

Original equipment market (OEM) is the market for industries who uses the products of
service industries. In this market mostly service Sales Corporation receives the orders from
the manufacturers of the cycles and motor bikes. OEM is the market in which b2b concept
is used. Normally big firms like Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki send their demands to the
SSC.

In this market customer tells its demand to service Sales Corporation. SSC send the demand
of customer to relevant factory and cost sheet is prepared by the costing department which
tells the estimated price of product. Also previous year’s price is keeping in mind while
calculating the estimated price. Final price is decided after negotiation with customer. After
getting the order production plan is made according to required delivery date and
production is started accordingly.

Supply tyres & tubes to original equipment manufacturers (OEM)

Service Tyres BBA Page 10

Tyre division has been supplying tyres & tubes to all major original equipment
manufacturers (OEM) with high share like 70% to atlas Honda limited (AHL), 50% to
Islamabad automotive company limited (IACL) and 100% to sohrab bicycle manufacturing
company, Lahore.

company dispatches the card. Company also sends catalogues on customer’s addresses.
One timed try on every 500 consumed in the shop. Last year one person won a car that
belongs to from Jhelum then company advertise him through ads photographs and print
media. Company also provide after sale services.

Marketing Strategy
SSC use aggressive marketing and take advantage through give ads on TV channels,
different campaigns and promotional activities so their competitor is so far from them on
this side.

Manufacturing Process

WHAT IS TIRE?
Before this we learn about Manufacturing Process of a Tire, we must understand the Tire & Its
Types.

Bias-Ply Tires and Radial Tires

There are two basic types of tire construction that mud, all terrain and street tires use as their
foundation. They are bias-ply and radial designs. Each type of tire construction has its own unique set of
characteristics that are the key to its performance, whether on road or off road and these characteristics can
help to define the purpose of the tire. The following information will explain what identifies the difference
between a bias ply tire and a radial type tire.

BIAS PLY
The simple definition of a Bias Ply Tire:

The bias ply tire construction utilizing rubber-coated layers known as plies composed of textile
cords, usually nylon and sometimes Kevlar. The plies layered diagonal from one bead to the other
bead at about a 30 degree angle. One ply is set on a bias in one direction as succeeding plies are
set alternately in opposing directions as they cross each other and the ends are wrapped around the
bead wires, anchoring them to the rim of the wheel. The layers of plies are then covered with more
rubber to form the tread of the tire. Bias ply tires are sometimes called cross-ply tires.

Performance and Purpose of a Bias Ply

Bias ply tires have a limited purpose in life and are only used for specific purposes or jobs. The
reason for this is because of its performance characteristics. However for some jobs the bias ply
tire is an ideal tire for the purpose such as for the tires of a towed trailer, farm equipment tires,
some purpose built tires like extreme terrain tires and some forms of racing still use bias ply tires.

Service Tyres BBA Page 22

Reading a Tire:
All tires are required to have certain information molded into the side of the tire in a location
known as the sidewall. Some of the information is self explanatory while other information
requires a little knowledge to decipher. The following will help you understand what this
information means.

TIRE CONSTRUCTION

Service Tyres BBA Page 23

The tire is an assembly of numerous components that are built up on a drum and then cured in a
press under heat and pressure. Heat facilitates a polymerization reaction that crosseslinks rubber
monomers to create long elastic molecules. These polymers create the elastic quality that permits
the tire to be compressed in the area where the tire contacts the road surface and spring back to its
original shape under high-frequency cycles. Typical components used in tire assembly are listed
below.

Tire plants are traditionally divided into five departments that perform special operations. These
usually act as independent factories within a factory.

 Compounding & Mixing

 Component Preparation
 Extrusion
 Calendaring
 BeadBuilding
 TireBuilding
 Curing
 Final Finish

1- COMPOUNDING & MIXING:

Service Tyres BBA Page 24
The first stage of tire making is collecting raw materials and formulating rubber compounds. The
raw materials used are rubber, oils, pigments, antioxidants, carbon black or silica, accelerators and
other additives. These are then mixed together in a huge blender, which is called Banburys. After
the mixing process is completed a gum like material forms. This material is then cut into strips.
These strips will make the treads.

Materials
 Natural rubber, or polyisoprene is the basic elastomer used in tire making
 Styrene-butadiene co-polymer (SBR) is a synthetic rubber which is often substituted
in part for natural rubber based on the comparative raw materials cost
 Polybutadieneis used in combination with other rubbers because of its low heat-buildup
properties
 Halobutyl rubber is used for the tubeless inner liner compounds, because of its low air
permeability. The halogen atoms provide a bond with the carcass compounds which are
mainly natural rubber. Bromobutyl is superior to chlorobutyl, but is more expensive
 Carbon Black, forms a high percentage of the rubber compound. This gives
reinforcement and abrasion resistance
 Silica, used together with carbon black in high performance tires, as a low heat buildup
reinforcement
 Sulphur crosslinks the rubber molecules in the vulcanization process
 Acceleratorsare complex organic compounds that speed up the vulcanization
 Activators assist the vulcanization. The main one is zinc oxide
 Antioxidantsand antiozonantsprevent sidewall cracking due to the action of sunlight
and ozone
 Textilefabric reinforces the carcass of the tire

2- COMPONENT PREPARATION:
Components fall into three classes based on manufacturing process.

 Extrusion

 Calendaring,

 Bead building.

WHAT IS EXTRUSION?

Service Tyres BBA Page 25

Extrusion is a process used to create objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile. A material is pushed
or drawn through a die of the desired cross-section. The two main advantages of this process over
other manufacturing processes are its ability to create very complex cross-sections and work
materials that are brittle, because the material only encounters compressive and shear stresses. It
also forms finished parts with an excellent surface finish.

TREAD EXTRUSIOR

Extrusion may be continuous (theoretically producing indefinitely long material) or semi-

continuous (producing many pieces). The extrusion process can be done with the material hot or
cold.

After the warming process, tread will be made according to tire specification i.e. tread height, tread
width, tread weight etc.

WHAT IS TREAD?

The tread of a tire or caterpillar track refers to the rubber on its circumference that makes contact
with the road. As tires are used, the tread is worn down limiting their effectiveness in providing
traction. A worn tire tread can be replaced using a process known as retreading. The word tread
is often used incorrectly to refer to the pattern of grooves cut into the rubber. Those grooves are
correctly called the tread pattern, or simply pattern

CALENDARING:
The calendar is a set of multiple large-diameter rolls that squeeze rubber compound into a thin
sheet, usually of the order of 2 meters wide. Fabric calendars produce an upper and lower rubber
sheet with a layer of fabric in between. Steel calendars do so with steel cords. Calendars are used
to produce body plies and belts. A creel room is a facility that houses hundreds of fabric or wire
spools that are fed into the calendar. Calendars utilize downstream equipment for shearing and
splicing calendared components.

The fabrics are changed depending on the type of the tire. But mostly Polyester is used.

Service Tyres BBA Page 26

Body ply

The body ply is a calendared sheet consisting of one layer of rubber, one layer of reinforcing fabric,
and a second layer of rubber. The earliest textile used was cotton; later materials include rayon,
nylon, polyester, and Kevlar. Passenger tires typically have one or two body plies. Body plies give
the
tire

structure strength. Truck tires, off-road tires, and aircraft tires have progressively more plies. The
fabric cords are highly flexible but relatively inelastic.

Bias Cutting

Ply is cut on Horizontal Bias cutting Machine for tyreplieThe "bead" is the edge of the tire. On
most tires, the beads consist of hoops of strong steel wire. The beads are what holds the tire onto
the rim, and are, in a sense, the "backbones" ofa tire Beads are bands of high tensile-strength steel
wire encased in a rubber compound. Bead wire is coated with special alloys of bronze or brass.

Coatings protect the steel from corrosion. Copper in the alloy and sulfur in the rubber cross-link
to produce copper sulfide, which improves bonding of the bead to the rubber. Beads are inflexible

Service Tyres BBA Page 27

and inelastic, and provide the mechanical strength to fit the tire to the wheel. Bead rubber includes
additives to maximize strength and toughness.

3- TIRE BUILDING:
Tire building is the process of assembling all the components onto a tire building drum. Tire-
building machines (TBM) can be manually operated or fully automatic. Typical TBM operations
include:

First-stage operation,

where inner liner, body plies, and sidewalls are wrapped around the drum, the beads are placed,
and the assembly turned up over the bead.

Second stage operation:

Where the belt package and tread are applied and the green tire is inflated and shaped.

All components require splicing. Inner liner and body plies are spliced with a square-ended
overlap. Tread and sidewall are joined with a skived splice, where the joining ends are bevel-cut.

The final product of the TBM process is called a Green Tire, where green refers to the uncured
state.

Service Tyres BBA Page 28

4- CURING (VULCANIZATION):
"Curing" refers to the chemical reaction (vulcanization) that transforms the tire from a plastic to
elastic state and binds the rubber materials to the cords and other reinforcements. The green tire is
inserted into a mold and formed using hot water and steam. Curing temperatures range from 150-
190 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the tire, and the process takes between nine to 15 minutes,
depending on tire size and weight. Curing is a completely automated process.

Tire Curing Press (Tire Vulcanizer)

5- FINAL FINISH:
After the tire has been cured, there are several additional operations. Tire uniformity measurement
is a test where the tire is automatically mounted on wheel halves, inflated, run against a simulated
road surface, and measured for force variation. Tire balance measurement is a test where the tire
is automatically placed on wheel halves, rotated at a high speed and measured for imbalance.

In the final step, tires are inspected by human eyes for numerous visual defects such as incomplete
mold fill, exposed cords, blisters, blemishes, and others.

WOBBLE TEST

To move or rotate with an uneven or rocking motion or unsteadily from side to side.

WOBBLE TESTING MACHINE

MC TUBE
Motorcycle Inner Tubes are made from Rubber which is of 2 types.

 Natural Rubber

 Butyl Rubber

Natural Rubber

is an elastomeric (an elastichydrocarbonpolymer) that was originally derived from a milky

colloidal suspension, or latex, found in the sap of some plants. The purified form of natural rubber
is the chemical polyisoprene, which can also be produced synthetically. Natural rubber is used
extensively in many applications and products, as is synthetic rubber.

butyl rubber

Butyl rubber was first developed by BASF in 1931 and sold under the trade name Oppanol B. It
was later developed in 1937, by researchers William J. Sparks and Robert M. Thomas, at Standard
Oil's (which became Exxon in 1972) Linden, N.J. laboratory. Texas Petrochemicals and Lubrizol
Corporation are one of the largest manufacturers of PIB in North America.

In 1950s and 1960s, halogenated butyl rubber (halo butyl) was developed, in its chlorinated
(chlorobutyl) and brominates (bromobutyl) variant, providing significantly higher curing rates
and allowing co vulcanization with other rubbers like natural rubber and styrene-butadiene rubber.
Halo butyl is today the most important material for inner tubes. The butyl rubber is vulcanized by
elemental sulfur.

Tube Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing Process
rubber is mixed with best quality chemicals and after proper mixing in the desired temperature
and time the same is then delivered to the extruding
section and the correct size of the required dimension
is extruded.

The extruded pieces are cut to the appropriate lengths

and valve are jammed and the end joined properly under

precision calibration equipment and professional laboratory personnel. Our lab has continuously
upgraded its calibration capability to satisfy customers’ different calibration requirements.

TENSILE TEST
Scope:
Tensile tests measure the force required to break a specimen and
the extent to which the specimen stretches or elongates to that
breaking point. The data is often used to specify material, to
design parts to withstand application forces and as a quality
control check of materials.

Test Procedure:

Place specimens in the grips of the Instron at a specified gage

length and pull until failure. The testing speed is determined by
the material specification. An extensometer can also be attached
to test specimen to determine elongation and tensile modulus.

Specimen Size:
Dumbbell or ring specimen is required. It can be either injection molded or cut from a flat sheet.

Service Tyres BBA Page 34

Data:
The following calculations are the most common results given:
1. Tensile strength (at yield and at break)
2. Tensile modulus (for elastomers, this is stress at a given % strain)
3. Strain
4. Elongation and percent elongation at yield
5. Elongation and percent elongation at break

There are additional calculations and a variety of units (lbs, psi, MPa, kN, etc.)

ELONGATION TESTING:

The increase in a sample's gauge length measured after a rupture divided

by the sample's original gauge length is referred to as elongation. The
greater the elongation, the higher the ductility of the material. Elongation
cannot be used to predict the behavior of materials subjected to sudden or
repeated loading.

Elongation testing can be carried out on a range of Lloyd

Instruments materials testing machines together with NEXYGENPlus data
analysis software when more comprehensive testing results are required.

MODULUS TEST

The Stiffness / rigidity / hardness of a material calculated by measuring the

stress on a test sample and dividing by the strain.

DRUM TEST

Service Tyres BBA Page 35

The endurance and strength of a tire is very important for vehicle safety. To ensure this, tyres must
attain a minimum standard. Most countries adopt or refer to the regulations and test methods
established by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).

1- High Speed Performance, Tire Endurance and Low Inflation Pressure Performance.

Tests are evaluated by a test drum. The test tire is pressed against the surface of the rotating drum
at the required load and speed. If the tire does not fail after running, it passes the test.

The diameter of the drum is fixed by the standard.

2- Tire Strength:

Service Tyres BBA Page 36

Tire strength is evaluated by applying a force in the tread area of the tire. The breaking energy is
calculated by the amount of force required, and the depth of penetration. It is measured by pressing
the tire onto a cylindrical steel plunger. The dimension of the cylindrical steel plunger is fixed by
the standard.

RHEOMETERS

The EKT-2000DPR dynamic processing remoter is a newest technology rubber-testing instrument,

which measuring the viscosity and elastic of polymer properties by dynamic mechanical testing
system.

Dynamic processing remoter is designed with rotor less(Moving Die)cavity structure and provides
dynamic, strain, modulus measurements in different temperature condition. Using this instrument
is not only for better product quality control and also very suitable for laboratory institution of
detail research & development of rubber compound.

Pest Analysis

The factors that are beyond the controls of the company are called the PEST analysis. These are
the macro environment factors that externally effect the organization that’s why they are also called
the external factors. These are the political, economic, social and the technology factors. These are
discussed below:

Political Factors

The political situation of Pakistan is not satisfactory. Due to the rapid change in the Government
every government sets its own new trade policies. Following are the effects of political system on
Servis.

 High taxation on growing industries like Servis.

 Employment practices, Unions, Associations are very challenging.

 Government’s policy on the economy

 Change in complexion and composition of Legislatures

 Terrorism

Service Tyres BBA Page 41

Economic Factors

The economic condition of Pakistan can also affect the foreign investors increasing inflation rate
make the cost of production high and thus reduce the profit margin of the investor. But now the
economic conditions are getting better. Following are some Economic factors:

 Labor costs

 Business cycle stage (e.g. prosperity, recession, recovery)

 Exchange Rate Mechanism

 Inflation rate

 Infrastructure quality

 Skill level of workforce

 Heavy operating cost occurs in daily working.

Social-Cultural Factors
