MALAY LANGUAGE GUIDE
Malay is spoken by about 14 million people in
Malaya, Sumatra, Java and Borneo and is widely
used as a trade language throughout the Netherlands
East Indies. This Language Guide will enable you to
ask directions, buy things or order a meal in the
Malay-speaking regions. Knowing a little Malay will
also help you get along with the people, for they will
naturally be pleased to see a stranger showing enough
interest in them to try to speak their language.
The variety of Malay given here (called Low,
Bazaar, or Market Malay) is the everyday languag:
of the ordinary people. The educated people speak a
form of the language (called High Malay) which has
a more complicated grammar, but they naturally also
understand the simpler form of Malay.
There are a number of variations in the way Malay
is spoken in different regions. The pronunciation given
here, which is that used in Java, will be understood
wherever Malay is spoken. If you find yourself in
another region, try CO speak like the people around
you.

word out loud right after you hear it and say it exactly
the way the Malay speaker does. 1mi tate the pronun-
ciation .is closely as you Lan, lust as You might mimic

detail of the pronunLiation, even the rhythm and
intonation. Follow the words in your Guide but use
them only as a reminder; if You hear something differ-
ent from what you see vritten, gu by what you hear.
Remember that you can't get the sound of a language
from the printed word aloneyou haze to use your ears
eren more than your eyes. If you don't have the records

6 7
and can't get a Malay speaker to pronounce the words,
you will have to rely on the Hints on Pronunciation.
By the time you have practiced the Useful Words
and Phrases several times, you will know what sound
each letter stands for in the Guide. You will then be
able to pronounce the Additional Expressions even
though you have not actually heard them, and you
will be able to form sentences of your own by using
the section called Fill-in Sentemes.

Hints on Pronunciation
All the words and phrases are written in a spelling
which you read like English. Each letter or combina-

7
tion of letters is used for the sound it normally repre-
sents in English and it always stands for the same
sound. Thus, -oo- is always to be read as in too,
boot, tooth, roost. Say these words and then pronounce
the vowel sound by itself. That is the sound you must
use every time you see -oo- in the Pronunciation
column. If you should use some other soundfor
example, the one in blood or the one in door---you
might be misunderstood.
Curved lines Ci are used to show sounds that are
pronounced together without any break; for example,
n_yoan-y a meaning 'Madam... Apostrophes (')are
used to show sounds that have a slight break between
them; for example, -t'ree-ma ka -see" meaning
"Thank you."
As you listen to the records you will notice that in
Malay all syllables are pronounced very clearly.

SPECIAL POINTS
with a dot underneath stands for
