Master of Materials Engineering (Leuven)

Master of Science
Materials are at the heart of our quality of life and economic welfare and this will continue to be the case in
the foreseeable future, especially considering the need to build a sustainable world and to use our resources
intelligently. Materials engineers invent, design, make and use materials for products, processes and
services. You are educated for leadership in sectors where materials play a decisive role.

Academic calendar
What's the programme all about? 1st semester: end of September -> end
of January (exams in January)
The master aims at educating you so that you will be able to design new materials, and make sustainable choices, both in
an industrial and academic environment. 2nd semester: half of February -> end of
June (exams in June)
These capabilities will be based on a thorough understanding and use of the relationships between the internal structure
(crystal structure, microstructure, architecture) of materials, their properties (mechanical, electrical, chemical) and their KU Leuven academic calendar
processing (the materials triangle).

Strengths

The Department of Materials Engineering (MTM) is a world player in design, characterisation, modelling and
development of new materials. Close links with imec and KU Leuven's biomedical group strengthen the programme in
addressing upcoming application domains. MTM is strongly involved in powder processing of metals and ceramics,
including 3D printing.
MTM is one of the few material departments where both structural composites and metals are strongly represented in
both research and teaching.
You mingle with fellow-students and assistants, (68% non-Belgian), lecturers (26% non-Belgian) from around the
globe. In terms of outgoing mobility, participation in the Erasmus+ programme is encouraged for the Belgian students.
Application deadline for 2020-2021

1 March 2020 (for non-EEA citizens)

1 June 2020 (for EEA citizens)

KU Leuven uses an online application system. You can download and submit your application form via
www.kuleuven.be/application. Students with a Flemish degree can consult www.kuleuven.be/inschrijven.

Tuition Fee 2019-2020

The current tuition fee is €938.80 for EEA students and €6,000 for non-EEA students. The tuition fee for the 2020-2021
academic year will be determined in the spring of 2020. Please consult the website for the most recent

Career perspectives

Prominent technical industries such as the automotive, aerospace, energy, microelectronics, and chemical industries and
emerging sectors such as nanotechnology, biomaterials and recycling are keen to hire qualified and talented materials
engineers.

Materials engineers are prepared for work as process engineers, materials or product developers, design specialists,
quality control engineers or consultants. Graduates with an interest in research can apply for an R&D position, or start a
PhD. Some alumni have gone on with starting their own successful companies.

Start your career, during your studies

During your bachelor's and master's programme you can already shape your own profile by choosing a certain
specialisation, studying abroad (Erasmus), doing a work placement, or starting your own business.

The Student Career Centre is happy to put you on the right track towards your first work experience. The centre also
coaches you in the search for an interesting job and helps you with job interviews. For students wanting to start their own
business KU Leuven also has Lcie, the KU Leuven community that encourages students with innovative and
entrepreneurial ideas.

Don’t know where to start? The Student Career Centre's databases contain offers for jobs, volunteer work, innovation
projects and student jobs. You can also visit one of the events organised by the Career Centre.
