BACKGROUND: International Centre for Ecological Engineering

International Centre for Ecological Engineering (ICEE) was established in 2003 by the University of
Kalyani in collaboration with International Ecological Engineering Society (IEES), Switzerland. The
ICEE is the outcome of the “International Seminar on Ecological Engineering” organized University of
Kalyani in collaboration with International Ecological Engineering Society, Switzerland on November,
1998. The founder members of the ICEE are Professor B. B. Jana, Professor of Zoology, Kalyani
University(India) and Dr. Johannes Heeb, President, IEES), Switzerland.
After the great success of the above conference with more than 300 participants from more than 15
countries of the globe and a high rated publication of the proceedings of the conference in the form of a
book. The interactive global ideas on Ecological Engineering generated from the conference specially
focused on West Bengal as important site for wastewater treatment. As a result, Board of members of
IEES specially Dr. Johannes Heeb were extremely keen to start such a Centre in India which was totally
new in India and Professor B. B. Jana was entrusted to go ahead with the decision of IEES for the
establishment of an International Centre for Ecological Engineering (ICEE) in this University in strong
collaboration with International Ecological Engineering Society, Switzerland. The then Vice Chancellor
Professor Basudeb Barman accepted the proposal in principle and formed a Steering Committee with
Vice-Chancellor as Chairman, Professor B. B. Jana as Coordinator along with other important members
of administration and academies (Registrar, Finance Officer, Dean of Faculty of Science, Head, Deptt. of
Zoology, Dr. R. D. Banerjee and Dr. R. N. Das). An International Advisory Committee was also formed
with a number of internationally eminent scientists such as Professor Peter Jenssen (Norway), Dr. Bjorn
Guterstam (Sweden), Dr. Johannes Heeb (Switzerland), Professor W. Mitsch (USA) Dr. M. S.
Swaminathan (India), Dr. A. S. Ayyappan (India) and other distinguished personalities.

1
THE BEGINNING

In the beginning, the ICEE started functioning in the laboratory of Professor B. B. Jana, outside
the Department of Zoology, University of Kalyani without any permanent faculty position or office
staff. Due to sincere efforts made by Professor B. B. Jana over the years, the International Centre
has made remarkable strides in research at the national and international arena with
implementation of at least six major projects funded by CSIR, DST. DBT, GTZ (Germany), TTZ
(Germany), Eco-San (European Commission) with Professor B. B. Jana, as Principal Investigator.
Recently, a sponsored major research project on impact of climate change in aquaculture has been
awarded to Professor B. B. Jana (Principal Investigator) as Vice-Chairman of ICEE by the
Director- General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.

DEPARTMENT OF ECOLOGICAL STUDIES

The Department of Ecological Studies was established by the ICEE, University of Kalyani in 2010 with
conducting course of M. Sc. on Environmental Management. The special and unparallel criteria of the
Department:

 Multidisciplinary topics of courses

 International collaboration
 Strong profile of faculties
 Young faculties
 Homely and healthy atmosphere
 Friendly cooperation to students

MOUS WITH ICEE

ICEE, has been engaged in diverse activities in the fields of academic, training and capacity building,
extension and research activities towards protection of environment, uplift of rural economy, etc.
Constant hard work and sincere efforts are being made to include International and National
Organizations for active support and collaboration so that the ICEE may find an important place and
recognition in the international arena by its substantial contribution and cutting edge research towards
sustainable development in a global perspective.
However, a number of MOUs have been signed with
i. International Ecological Engineering Society (IEES), Switzerland - Dr. J. Heeb
ii. ACTS, Bangalore, India - Dr. Ken Gnanakan
iii. William Carey University, Shillong, India - Dr. Ken Gnanakan
iv. Indian Council of Agricultural research, Government of India – Dr. S. Ayyappan, Director –
General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
v. Kochi University, Japan – Professor Dr. K. Ohnishi
vi. Noble Institution for Environmental Peace, Canada - Professor Stephen Armstrong, Dean of
Engineering, Noble International University, USA, Professor Roger Hansell, University of
Toronto, Canada and Dr. B. Ganguly, Canada.
vii. Gyeongsang National University, South Korea

2
OBJECTIVES OF DEPARTMENT AND ICEE
