This study aimed to enhance public understanding on caffeine content in these drinks.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Milk tea refers to several forms of beverage found in many cultures, containing some combination of tea and
milk. Beverages vary based on the amount of each of these key ingredients, the method of preparation, and
the inclusion of other ingredients (varying from sugar or honey to salt or cardamom). Instant milk tea powder
is a mass-produced product.

Tea originated in Southwest China during the shang dynasty where it was used as a medicinal drink.

The shop owner, Tu Tsong he created bubble tea in 1986 by adding white “Fenyuan” to create the appearance
of pearls – which is supposedly why the drink is also called pearl tea. However Hanlin tapioca balls to black,
creating the current day bubble tea drink.

Since Taiwan was not very popular tourist destination for Filipinos. Back then, Milktea made its way to the
Philippines at around the Late 90”s.
Iced Coffee is a beverage made by percolation, infusion, or decoction from the roasted and ground seeds of a
coffee plant. In 9th century Ethiopian goat-herder named Kaldi. Allegedly observe his goats behaving
erratically after eating the red berries from a nearby caffea Arabica tree.

The native ( undomesticated ) origin of coffee is thought to have been Ethiopia. The earliest substantiated
evidence of either coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree is from the early 15 th century,
sufimonasteries of Yemen, spreaching soon to mecca and cairo. By the 16th century, it had reached the rest of
the middle east. Coffee than spread to the rest of Europe as well as southeast Asia and then to America.

Coffee production in the Philippines began as early as 1740 when the Spanish introduced coffee in the islands.

The Philippines is one of the few countries that produce the four main viable coffee varieties. Arabica
liberica(barako), Excelsa and Robusta. 90% of coffee produced in the country is Robusta. There has been
efforts to revitalize the coffee industry.

Coffee brewed then chilled with ice called “Iced Coffee” appears in menus and recipes in the late 19th century.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Milk tea made its way to the Philippines at around 90’s. In 2008, Serenitea came to be offering cold tea drinks
in a market that was still largely dominated by coffee shops. It pioneered the brewing of tea using an espresso
machine with the added option of customizing the drink in terms of sweetness level and sinkers.

The Cha Time brand itself started in 2005. When there were a lot of milk tea brands were already competing
against each other in Taiwan attempted to modernize the traditional tea culture by producing high tech tea
machines to make consistent quality fresh teas and a variety of tea flavors ,fruit essence and toppings ,with
the dream of going global one day.to achieve this, he worked on inventing the technology of tea brewing
machines that would achieve consistent product result by the time koa tasted the the brand and brought it over,
he had perfected the process.

Locally, the brand experienced fast growth expanding to 12 high -visability stores in early 2012, to around 70
branches by 2018 . other brands have started to come in to, notably Chris Tiu’s Happy lemon, which came by
way of Hongkong

With the growing success of these stores came the copycat street side stalls, which led to one particular incident
in 2015 that affected the Pinoy’s perception of the product. On april 12, 2015 a couple died after drinking milk
tea at a shop in Sampaloc, Manila.

It seems that koa, has hit upon the light formula. Since the brand started it has already expanded three times,
serving up more of that boba goodness that Filipinos have learned to love.

Iced coffee is also popular in the Philippines, and it is served in a number of café’s. Notable chains of
Philippines. Coffee shop include Figaro coffee, starbucks coffee, Bo’s coffee, fiorgelato café and coffee bean
tea leaf. For more elaborate version, a scoop of ice-cream is added on top. There are also ready-to-drink iced
coffee in cans.

Packaged iced coffee is gaining prominence in stores, featuring brands both foreign and domestic. For more
example, iced coffee (Nadeecino) has been introduced by a diary company called NADEC, and powdered
versions are introduced as an outstanding product innovation by a growing coffee brand called cofigue
developed by a multinational food company called goody.
