Psych248 Computer Assign 3 ANOVAs, Correlation, Regression

This assignment will involve using SPSS to answer a number of research questions using data sets provided.
You will run a one-way ANOVA, a bivariate correlation, and linear regression.

Study 1: Attachment Style and Relationship Satisfaction. Open file Relationship data.sav (on K drive or
Bb under Assignments). The data are from a web-survey of 302 U.S. adults who were married or living with a
romantic partner. To understand the theory better a measure of the 4 groups is provided.

Attachment Style measure: Bartholomew & Horowitz (1991) created the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ-CV)
consists of four sets of statements, each describing a category or style of attachment. Choose the one that best
reflects how you feel.

Secure - It is relatively easy for me to become emotionally close to others. I am comfortable depending on
others and having others depend on me. I don't worry about being alone or having others not accept me.

Dismissive - I am comfortable without close emotional relationships. It is very important to me to feel

independent and self-sufficient, and I prefer not to depend on others or have others depend on me.

Preoccupied - I want to be completely emotionally intimate with others, but I often find that others are
reluctant to get as close as I would like. I am uncomfortable being without close relationships, but I sometimes
worry that others don't value me as much as I value them.

Fearful - I am somewhat uncomfortable getting close to others. I want emotionally close relationships, but I
find it difficult to trust others completely, or to depend on them. I sometimes worry that I will be hurt if I allow
myself to become too close to others.

Analysis: Test for differences in relationship satisfaction by attachment style (4 attachment styles) using the
proper analysis in SPSS.

Means for groups in homogeneous subsets are displayed.

a. Uses Harmonic Mean Sample Size = 51.984.
b. The group sizes are unequal. The harmonic mean of the
group sizes is used. Type I error levels are not guaranteed.

Written Task: Write a brief summary of the study and the ANOVA results in a paragraph. The answers to the
questions below are included as parts of the paragraph. Please put answers in APA format.
A. Is the data significant? B. Is homogeneity test significant and what does this mean?
C. Run Tukey post hoc test to understand the pattern of results. Which pairwise post-hoc levels are
significantly different?
D. What is the effect size? Include that too.
Study 2: Age & Pain. Using the Assign3S14 B dataset - use Pearson Correlation and simple linear
Regression to create results and then summarize these in APA-style.

a. Create a scatterplot with pain rating on Y and age on X axis. Add a title to your scatterplot “Pain
Ratings by Age” and add your name(s) as the second title.

b. Run a Pearson Correlation on the same two variables – age and pain rating.
Analyze, Correlate, Bivariate, choose your variables – use defaults Pearson, 2-tailed.

Age Pearson Correlation 1 -.885**

N 16 16
PainRating Pearson Correlation -.885** 1

Sig. (2-tailed) .000

N 16 16

**. Correlation is significant at the 0.01 level (2-tailed).

c. Run a simple regression model with painrating as DV and age as IV.
Analyze, Regression, Linear, choose your DV, IV(s) –use defaults (estimates, model fit).
Using your SPSS results find the regression coefficients that go with this model.

Predicted Y = bX + Y or for this model: predicted Y = -.804X + 97.467

Above use this model to predict the pain rating of a person who is 70 years old. (Show the calculations here
on the paper – also include a sentence describing this in your results.)
Written part – combine into one paragraph – a few sentences will be enough:

1. Describe the study and the analyses used to study the association between age and perceived pain.
From the scatter plot does the relationship appear reasonably linear and what is the direction of the
association between age and perceived pain?

2. Write a sentence to describe the pattern and strength of the correlation. Include the Pearson Correlation
coefficient and its significance (in APA format). How much variance is accounted for by age (r2)?

3. Describe the regression results simply and clearly- include the slope and constant and describe what the
slope means. Finally describe what the model predicts about the pain rating of a person who is 70 years
old.
