building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities ,or who are

interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

up all night trying to cram the information into his head is an example of someone with bad

study habits.

networking sites on a regular basis tend to have more stomach aches, besides sleeping

problems, as well as anxiety and depression. Such students also display more of narcissistic

tendencies besides many other psychological disorders, including various antisocial behaviors

as well as aggressive tendencies.

the students’ study habits can affect their performance in various subject matters.

research studies and articles that show how these variables are related. This chapter ends with

the summary of literature review.

Similarly, a preliminary analysis of the “Effects of Facebook usage” undergraduate

students at Lulea University of Technology in Sweden. The research model used for this study

tests the perceived affect of self regulation, trust and personality traits on student achievements.

The research model suggests the negative mediating affects of the Social Networking Sites

such as Facebook, Twitter and Skype etc. The concluding remarks are that, a decrease occurs

in the student’s academic performance but a positive effect on the satisfaction with life. (Impact

of SNS usage on Students Academic Achievements)

Similarly, SNS do affect one’s academic performance adversely. It causes the gradual drop in

the grades of the students directly. It affects the student’s academic performance if he/she

invests his/her time in SNS instead in his studies. Time wasting is a major issue in this regard.

SNS are highly addictive to those people who cannot control themselves into constantly using

these sites, prioritize entertainment over work and gives to much attention to social acceptance

and affiliation. The situation is that if a student gives too much time to SNS, there is an

ultimately decrease in its academic performance. (Sana, Limayem, & Salehi-Sangari, 2011)

According to recent studies, Facebook has negative effect on the academic

performance. The Britain School study which was about the Facebook and its effect. Testing

was done for a period of three months, the first two months access to Facebook was denied and

the third month access to Facebook was allowed. In this study, it was noticed slight decline of

grades, but what is even more important is lack of concentration and poor knowledge

acceptance. The problem does not occur only in case when students were actually logged on to

Facebook and didn’t pay attention to what teacher says. The problem is in the fact that current

event on the Facebook divert them also in the time when they are not connected to it. The

students do not concentrate on their studies because their concentration is divided into study
and Facebook both. The test showed that the use of social networks in school has a negative

impact on grades.

Body

Effect of Social Media on Study Habits of the students of Grade 10-Agoncillo

In the article, the researcher Ms. April S. Reyes (2010) in a study entitled “Effect of
Social Networking to Students' Study Habit”
With the rapid changes to our generation, youth is now more demanding in acquiring

technologies that will suit to their needs, especially in their studies. Certainly, the access in

Internet or in the World Wide Web is easy and there are many benefits can be gained. The use

of this accessibility is applied mostly on the professionals such as medical practitioners,

business tycoons, and even government officials. The purpose of their usage the Internet is

different in terms of their needs and various marketers also applied their expertise on it.

Apparently, the growing numbers of users are members of different social networking sites and

most of them are students.

Social networking such as facebook, one of the largest social networking sites, twitter,

google+, and many others has been spread out on the websites of the Internet accessibility.

Many individuals, mostly students and their friends are engaged in social networking.
Social networks are made to entertain and to interact with the other people even if they are far

away. Due to the nonstop change in cultural and social aspect and with the accordance of

technological revolution, the social networking’s real meaning in the face of the Internet and

Web is still in question. There are many sites that are pushing their boundaries to follow the

achievement of the Google in terms of marketing and generating revenues which is a important

factor between the search engine and on networking sites.

Students of Grade 10-Agoncillo are unconscious that these social networking can gradually

affect their studies that will reflect on their grades. The combination of study and Internet sites

opened the doors for positive and negative results. They are some students of Grade 10-

Agoncillo are affected and some are not. This idea brought out the issues about the study habits

of the students.

The effect of social networking on the student’s study habits results in different ranges.

There are instances that the student who uses social media especially facebook often has

consistently lower grades, in which on the other study’s result is different.

Nonetheless, it is logical to think that the students of Grade 10-Agoncillo who more often

in a day is highly risky in failing grades, than the one who can manage her or his time and

maintaining the routine to finish all the school works assignment before logging in social media.

Students today have begun to rely on the accessibility of information that is available on

the social media platforms specifically as well as the web in general in order to get answers.

This means that there is a reduced focus on learning as well as on retaining information.
In addition, students are attempting to multi-task. They are trying to check various social

media sites while they study. This leads to reduced academic performance. Likewise, their

ability to concentrate on their task at hand gets significantly reduced due to the distraction that is

brought by all these social media sites.

The other negative effect on students is that they are spending too much time on social

sites, and much lesser time on socializing in person.

These social media sites have become so popular in such a short time because the

information gets published in a fast way. This has actually created a tolerant attitude for using

proper spelling as well as grammar. In fact, the students are unable to write effectively without

the aid of the spell check feature of a computer.

The Negative Effects

1.The students of Grade 10-Agoncillo rely on the accessibility of information on social

media specifically in the web in general to provide answers. That means areduced on learning

and retaining information.

2. Students attempt to multi-task, checking social media accounts while studying , show

reduced academic. Their ability to concentrate on the task at hand is significantly reduced by

the distractions that are brought by the most commonly used social media sites.

3. They spend more time in social media than they need to spend socializing in person

because of the lack of body signals and other nonverbal; cues, like tone and inflection , social

networking sites are not an adequate replacement for face to face communication. Students

who spend a great deal of time on social media are less able to properly communicate into

person.
4. The popularity of social media, and the speed at which information is published, has

created a tolerant attitude towards proper spelling and grammar. The reduces a student’s ability

to effectively write without relying on a computer’s spell check feature.

5. Student are procrastinating in all school homework’s because they always set priority

to check and login in there social media accounts before doing ti.

The Positive Effect

1. Social networking has increased the rate and quality of collaboration for the students.

They are better able to plan meeting or share information quickly, which can increase

productivity and help them learn how to work well in group.

2. By spending so much time working with new technologies, students develop more

familiarity with the computers and other electronic devices. With the increased focus

technology in education and business, this will help students build skills that will aid them

throughout their school paper works.

3. The ease with which a student can customize their profile makes them more aware of

basic aspects of design and layout that are not often taught in schools.

4. The ease and speed with which users can upload pictures, videos or stories has resulted

in a greater amount of sharing of creative works. Bing able to get instant feedback from

friends and family on their creative outlets helps students refine and develop their artistic

ability and can provide much needed confidence or help them device what career path

they may want to pursue.

Conclusion

The researcher therefore to conclude the ideas how to lessen this implication of social

media on the study habits of Grade 10-Agoncillo.

The best solution to this implication of social media sites on the study habits is to teach

them how to moderate their access to social networking and also reducing the amount of they

time spent on social networking sites such as this apps are most commonly used facebook,

twitter and others. Paying attention and supervising them at their school assignments and

academic progresses. Ask them about school events. Firstly and foremost is to provide special

time for face to face interaction, like having some family lecture in which you discuss their

studies in a relaxed atmosphere.

Because daily overuse of these social media sites tends to have a negative effect on the

health of all students as it makes them more prone to various health problems in the future. This

is where peers, teachers and parents need to play a major role by making the students aware of

what they are missing out while spending too much time on these sites.
