SUMMARY

1.) Water filtration

In this experiment, the materials are 1.5 L bottle, cloth, garden soil, activated charcoal,
sand, rubber band, dirty water and cutter. First, we cut the 1.5L bottle into half using cutter, and
then placed the top of the bottle inversely to the bottom of the bottle. We covered the tip of
the bottle with a piece of cloth then added the garden soil as the first layer on top of the piece
of cloth. Above the garden soil, we added the charcoal and then sand. After that, we poured the
dirty water on top of the water filter we watched the watch dripped clean into the bottle below.
We have witnessed the dirty water became clean because of the process of filtration.

2.) Volcanic eruption

We need materials such as; bottle, newspaper, baking soda, vinegar, dishwashing soap,
cutter. We cut the bottle into half then pushed the top of the bottle inside the other part of the
bottle to make it smaller. We molded the newspaper into a volcano shape and we painted it.
After creating the physical structure of the DIY volcano, first, we mixed the baking soda with the
dishwashing liquid so that it will become bubbly as it erupts. Then, we put the baking soda with
dishwashing liquid inside the volcano. We added the vinegar to the mixed substances then it
started to erupt.

3.) Fingerprint lifting

We had two experiments in the fingerprint lifting. In the first experiment, we needed
tape, glass lab, fingerprint black powder, and fingerprint card and fingerprint brush. We get the
fingerprint without petroleum jelly, just using the natural sweat of the hand. We pressed the
fingers of the right hand (one at a time) in the glass lab to get the fingerprint and then we brush
the fingerprint with a fingerprint black powder until it will be visible. We lifted the fingerprint in
the glass lab using transparent tape then paste it in a fingerprint card.
In the second experiment, we had same procedures but we didn’t use glass lab instead
we did it in a door knob. We put petroleum jelly in the left hand fingers and touched the door
knob then we brushed the door knob with fingerprint black powder to make it visible. We used
tape to lift the fingerprint present in the door knob then we put it in a fingerprint card.
CONCLUSION

We learned about waste water treatment. Water is being filtered through

activated charcoal, soil and sand to clean any small parts of dirt. Also, we have learned that we
can make a homemade filtration which we can filter dirty water and turn it into clean. Although,
some of the filtrated water is not drinkable, it can still be use in washing things.

In the volcano experiment, we have learned how different substances react when
they are mixed with each other. The chemical reaction we have witnessed is that mixing
vinegar, which is acid, and baking soda, which is base, results in the formation of carbon
dioxide gas, forcing the contents of the bottle out of the volcano. When we mix an acid and
base, they react to neutralize each other that produce carbon dioxide,

As criminology students such fingerprint experiments are very important to us. It

will serves as a practice for us if we will be having crime investigation. Among the
experiments, these last 2 experiments are our group’s favorites. We have learned that we
can detect people’s fingerprint through their sweat and with the use of brush and fingerprint
black powder.

Overall, we have learned so many things in our experiments. We are still looking
forward for more exciting experiments and hoping we can learn more things that we can use
in the future.
