Drinking and Unsafe Sex 2

Abstract

Drinking impairs the judgment of everyone who is under its influence. Drinker’s

experiences mild euphoria and loss of inhibition as alcohol impairs region of the brain

controlling behavior and emotions. Alcohol impairs behavior, judgment, memory, concentration

and coordination (shortened attention span, impaired problem solving abilities), as well as

inducing extreme mood swings and emotional outbursts. This causes people to do things that

they wouldn’t normally due if they were sober. This paper will explain how drinking leads to

unsafe sex.
Drinking and Unsafe Sex 3

Hypot he s is

My bivariate hypothesis is the more a person drinks, the higher their chances are of having

unsafe sex. My independent variable is drinking. The values for drinking are none, once, twice,

3-5 times, 6-9 times, and10 times or more. My dependent variable is unsafe sex. The values for

unsafe sex are not at all, once, and 2 times or more. My control variable is gender. The values for

gender are males and females.

My multivariate hypothesis is that a higher percentage of women will have unsafe sex while

under the influence of alcohol than men. Drinking alcohol can lead to increased risky sexual

behavior. These behaviors include not using protection against disease, or having sex that you

later regret. Much evidence indicates that alcohol independently influences decisions around sex,

and undermines skills for condom negotiation and correct use.

Drinking and Unsafe Sex 4

Rationale

Binge drinking results in a decreased ability to make clear decisions. People drink with

the expectation of decreasing inhibitions, or some may drink because they are anxious, or

depressed, and they expect alcohol to alleviate their symptoms. Women binge drinkers are more

likely to have anal sex than men binge drinkers. Women binge drinkers are three times as likely

to have anal sex, and twice as likely to have multiple sex partners compared to women who do

not drink alcohol. Compared to non-drinking women, women binge drinkers are also five times

as likely to have gonorrhea. If women and men consume the same dose of alcohol, women will

have a higher concentration of alcohol in their system, and substantially greater alcohol-caused

impairment than men.

Unsafe sex can lead have lifelong affects. Females can get pregnant if a condom is not

used correctly or used at all. This can b a bad situation for both the male and female because they

may not be ready or able to take care of a child. This can lead to the contraction of STD’s such

as HIV/AIDs. This disease is lifelong and ultimately leads to death. If people do not remember

having unprotected sex, they may be unaware that they have a STD. Thus, STD’s are spread

unknowingly and left untreated. STD’s that may be easily treated become worse and my cause

permanent damage.

Drinking and Unsafe Sex 7

Discussion

Overall, binge drinking is directly linked to unsafe sex. Drinking affects people

differently, but for most people, drinking impairs their judgment. Men and women do things

while they are under the influence of alcohol that they wouldn’t do if they were sober. Condoms

may not be used when people are under the influence of alcohol for a number of reasons.

Someone may be too drunk to drive to the store, too lazy to use a condom, or not use the condom

properly. Most people assume that because a man’s sexual drive is increased while under the

influence of alcohol, they will have more cases of unsafe sex. People base these theories on the

belief that a higher percentage of men binge drink than women.

In addition, because of double standards that exist worldwide, women are expected to be

reserved. Therefore, in order for a woman to engage in risky sexual acts, she will more than

likely have to be under the influence of alcohol. Double- standards make society think that it is

okay for men to be promiscuous and have multiple partners. Thus, most women have to drink in

order to be okay with the fact that they are going against what society wants.
