V. Extension Site

The activity with the theme: Health Across the Curriculum: A Health Education
Awareness shall be implemented at Banban National High School in Banban, Bangui, Ilocos
Norte. This school has been identified as one of the affiliated schools of the joint project of
the Mariano Marcos State University and the Department of Education- Division of Ilocos
Norte, which is the “Adopt-an-SDG Ilocos Norte School.”

VI. Background of the Proposed Program

The Kindergarten to Grade 12 (“K to 12”) Health Curriculum aims to assist the Filipino
leader in attaining, sustaining and promoting life-long health and wellness. The learning
experience through the program provides opportunities for the development of health
literacy competencies among students and to enhance their over-all wellbeing.
Health Education from Kindergarten to Grade 10 focuses on the physical, mental,
emotional, as well as the social, moral and spiritual dimensions of holistic health. It enables
the learners to acquire essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills that are necessary to
promote good nutrition; to prevent and control diseases; to prevent substance abuse and
misuse; to reduce health-related risk behaviors; to prevent and control injuries with the
end-view of maintaining and improving personal, family, community, as well as global
health.
The focus on skills development is explicitly demonstrated in the primary grade levels.
Meanwhile, a comprehensive body of knowledge is provided in the upper year levels to
serve as a foundation in developing desirable health attitudes, habits and practices.
In order to facilitate the development of health literacy competencies, the teacher is
highly encouraged to use developmentally-appropriate learner-centered teaching
approaches. This includes scaffolding on student experience and prior learning; utilizing
culture-responsive scenarios and materials; incorporating arts and music in imparting health
messages; engaging learners in meaningful games and cooperative learning activities; and
using life skills and value-based strategies particularly in discussing sensitive topics such as
substance abuse and sexuality. The teacher is also advised to use differentiated instruction
in order to cater to the learners’ various needs and abilities.
Anent to this, with the country’s Sustainable Development Goals, specifically on
combating diseases, the Mariano Marcos State University had established partnership with
the Department of Education, Division of Ilocos Norte through the Memorandum of
agreement and with the project, “Adopt-an-SDG Ilocos Norte School.”
Towards the continuing implementation of the said project, the MMSU-Graduate
School-MAN Students have envisioned themselves as instruments in fostering the
promotion of health and prevention of diseases among the identified clienteles at Banban
National High School. This is specifically through the Health Education Awareness on the “K
to 12” Health Curriculum.

VII. Significance of the Proposed Extension Program

Health Education emphasizes the development of positive health attitudes and

relevant skills in order to achieve a good quality of living. This is the most powerful tool in
combating different health risks and problems. While most people are aware of the
different health risks or problems, many forget to take the steps to have plan.
Thus, this activity with the Theme: “Health Across the Curriculum: A Health
Education Awareness to Junior High School” along with the Adopt-an-SDG Ilocos Norte-
School Project of the MMSU and the Department of Education, Division of Ilocos Norte, has
been conceptualized. This activity will be highlighted by a lecture-discussion,
demonstrations and return-demonstration among the identified clienteles. With the
established partnership of the proponents along with the various linkages, this program will
play a great role in preparing the target clienteles to become powerful instruments in
influencing their constituents in becoming more conscious about their health. Likewise, this
will serve as a turning point through which the students will develop a paradigm shift to
becoming more health conscious individuals, promoting their wellness and influencing
others, enjoying life and loving to live.

VIII. Objectives
