Review:
Before we proceed to our new lesson, let’s
have a quick review. What was our
Previous lesson? “It’s all about on how to
convert Radians to
degree.”
That’s right. So how do we convert angle
measure form degree to radians and
radians to degree” “ In converting the angle
measure from
degree to radians we use the
𝜋
formula 180 and radians to

degree we use the formula

180
𝜋
.

A. Unfreezing Activity
Okay, very good class, it
seems that you have mastered our
previous lesson. Now, let us proceed
to our next topic, but before that, let
us have a short game. (The teacher
will show the material for the game.)
Sir, I think it is a hunt-a-word
So what do you think is this game?
game.
Yes, that’s right. This game
contains six Mathematical words
which are related to our lesson for
today. All you have to do is find them
and then box them. Am I
understood? Yes sir.
Okay, let’s start.
Very good class, you’ve found
all the word we are searching for.
Can you please read all these
words? SINE
COSINE
TANGENT
COTANGENT
SECANT
COSECANT

Class, are you familiar with Not yet sir.

these words?
That will be our lesson fotr
today, which are the six trigonometric
functions.
For every right triangle, there
are six trigonometric functions:
 Sine (sin)
 Cosine (cos)
 Tangent (tan)
 Secant (sec)
 Cosecant (csc)
 Cotangent (cot)
To define these functions, let
us consider the right triangle below.

For each angle P or Q, there

are six functions; each function is
the ratio of two sides of the
triangle. The only difference
between the six functions is which
pair of sides we use.
In the following table
o a is the length of the side adjacent to
the angle (x) in question.
o o is the length of the side opposite
the angle.
o h is the length of the hypotenuse.

B. Activity
Before we precede our
discussion, let us have another
activity which will make you closer to
defining the six trigonometric ratios. I
will group you in to two. Each group
will be given three flash cards, each
cards has names, sin, cos, tan, sec,
csc, and cot. All you have to do is to
solve for the answer by following the
instructions in each cards given to
you. After doing your assigned tasks,
post our works on the board. I will
give you 5 minutes. Is that clear
class? Yes, sir.
Okay, you may start.

C. Analysis
Class, are you done?
Okay let us check your work.

Given a triangle, you should

be able to identify all 6 ratios for all
the angles (except the right angle).

Group 1:

Find:
sin A 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 3
Sin A = ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒 = 5
cos A
tan A 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 4
Cos A = =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒 5

𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 3
Tan A = 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 4

Okay, very good, group 1.

Class, what are the trigonometric
functions that the group 1, solved
for? Sir, the group 1 solved for the
sine, cosine, and tangent.
Yes, that’s right. These are the three
primary functions of right angles. So
as you have seen on their activity,
how are we going to solve for sine,
cosine and tangent? In solving for sine, we have to
divide the opposite side by
the hypotenuse.

In solving for the cosine, we

have to divide the adjacent
side by the hypotenuse.

And in solving for the tangent,

we have to divide the
opposite side by the adjacent
side.
Excellent, class. Now, let us proceed
to the work of group 2.

Group 2:
Find:
Csc A
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒 5
Sec A Csc A = =3
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
Cot A
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒 5
Sec A = 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
=4

𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 4
Cot A = 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
=3

So class what are the trigonometric

functions that the group 2 solved for? The group 2 solved for
cosecant, secant and
cotangent.
Yes, these are the other three
trigonometric functions. So how do
we solve for cosecant, secant, and
cotangent? In solving for cosecant, we
have to divide the hypotenuse
by the opposite side.

In solving for secant, we have

to divide the hypotenuse by
the adjacent side

And in solving for cotangent,

we have to divide the
adjacent side by the opposite
side.

Yes, very good class. What have you

noticed about cosecant, secant and
cotangent? Sir, they are reciprocals of
sine, cosine and cotangent.

You got it! What is the reciprocal of

sine? Cosecant, sir.

That’s right. How about the cosine? Secant, sir

And how about the tangent? Cotangent, sir.

D. Abstraction
Again, class, what are the first
three primary trigonometric
functions? Sine, cosine and tangent

How about the other three? Cosecant, secant and

cotangent.

What are the relationship of sine,

cosine and tangent to cosecant,
secant and cotangent? Sir, cosecant, secant and
cotangent are the reciprocals
of sine, cosine and tangent.

Yes, very good. it seems that you

already know the six trigonometric
function. Why do you think
trigonometric functions are
important? Trigonometric functions are
important when studying
triangles and circles and
modeling periodic phenomena
such as waves, sound, and
light.

Yes, very good.

E. Application
