Welcome to Third Grade  

 
Math 
This year, we are going to be focusing on three main strands: addition/subtraction within 
1000, multiplication and division, and fractions. We are going to accomplish this in a variety 
of ways, through doing story problems and using Investigations and Contexts for Learning 
as curriculum. All of this is grounded within a “CGI” philosophy, which is not led by the 
teacher but rather facilitated by the teacher. Students are going to be encouraged to 
develop their own authentic understanding of numbers. If we, as teachers, were to directly 
teach them strategies to try, students would inauthentically own strategies that make 
children see mathematics as a step-by-step procedure, rather than emphasizing critical 
thinking and analysis skills. All of this is woven into students having discourse every single 
day. When students learn and listen to one another, they are able to not only solidify their 
own understanding, but they are also able to push the thinking of others. As a third grade 
team, we also really want to emphasize that having a growth mindset is integral in how our 
brains grow. Our abilities are dynamic, not static. We are not born “good” at math. We get 
better at math through hard work and effort. Mistakes are encouraged, disagreements are 
OK, and persevering while being extremely challenged are all things that make our brains 
grow as human beings.  
 
 
Writing 
Our 3rd graders have valuable stories and knowledge to share, and their words deserve to 
be read! Throughout the school year, students will see themselves as true writers. We plan 
to accomplish this by implementing a workshop model for teaching the art of writing. This 
means, students will learn, understand, and utilize the writing process for multiple pieces of 
writing throughout the year. Students will learn how true authors generate ideas, draft 
stories, revise and edit their work, and ultimately publish a finished piece. We will closely 
examine work and strategies used by professional writers, and follow their examples to 
grow our own writing skills. Throughout the year, third graders will have experience writing 
personal narratives, informational text, and persuasive pieces. Beginning the year, writing 
lessons will be more heavily focused on content and stamina. As students begin to find joy 
and voice in their work, we will incorporate an additional focus on grammar and 
conventions. As students write in the workshop model, teachers will individually coach each 
student in his/her writing. In doing this, we will look closely for the most pressing opportunity 
for growth (rather than catching every mistake) and coach the child to improve that 
particular skill. This way, students are monitored, supported, and challenged on an individual 
basis to encourage development of this crucial skill. We are excited to watch the growth of 
this skill! 
 
 
 
 
 Reading  
What is Reader’s Workshop? 
● Readers have time to read high interest just-right books independently every day. 
● Readers select their own “good fit” books.  
● Readers respect each other’s reading time and reading lives. 
● Readers have daily opportunities to talk about their books in genuine ways. 
● Readers don’t just read the words but also understand the story. 
 
What Will Reading Workshop Look Like? 
 
Mini Lesson 
Each Reading Workshop session will begin with a mini lesson that lasts approximately 10 
minutes. Each mini lesson will focus on a reading strategy and will often be based on a 
Mentor Author’s work. 
 
Independent Reading Time with Instruction 
Children are engaged in independent reading time. During this time the teacher is doing the 
following: 
● Reading conferences – I listen to your child read from any one of their books. I offer 
a complement of something great I’ve noticed, and then provide instruction that can 
help them become a better reader. 
● Guided Reading Group – Your child will be given texts to read 
that are at his instructional reading level. 
● Strategy Groups – These groups can be composed of children at a variety of reading 
levels, but who all need extra instruction on a given strategy/skill.   
 
 
Reading Logs 
These are a tool used between the team which would be your third grader, you, and their 
teacher to figure out who they are as a reader. We can use the reading logs to set goals as 
readers. Please fill out the log with integrity. If your child misses a night of reading because 
you’re busy going to soccer or had a family event then don’t write down any reading for 
that night. When we meet again later with your third grader we might notice every Tuesday 
is a really busy night for them and ask them to double up their reading on another night. 
Please help support your third grade by reminding them about their reading log and making 
sure they are bringing their reading life folder back to school each day.  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 Bienvenido a tercer grado 
 
Matemáticas 
Este año, nos centraremos en tres líneas principales: suma / resta dentro de 1000, 
multiplicación y división y fracciones. Vamos a lograr esto de varias maneras, a 
través de la resolución de problemas de la historia y el uso de Investigaciones y 
Contextos para el aprendizaje como plan de estudios. Todo esto se basa en una 
filosofía "CGI", que no es dirigida por el maestro sino más bien facilitada por el 
maestro. Se alentará a los estudiantes a desarrollar su propia comprensión 
auténtica de los números. Si nosotros, como maestros, les enseñáramos 
directamente estrategias para probar, los estudiantes poseerían estrategias 
auténticamente que hagan que los niños vean las matemáticas como un 
procedimiento paso a paso, en lugar de enfatizar el pensamiento crítico y las 
habilidades de análisis. Todo esto está entretejido en estudiantes que tienen un 
discurso todos los días. Cuando los estudiantes aprenden y se escuchan unos a 
otros, no solo pueden consolidar su propia comprensión, sino que también pueden 
impulsar el pensamiento de los demás. Como equipo de tercer grado, también 
queremos enfatizar que tener una mentalidad de crecimiento es esencial para el 
crecimiento de nuestros cerebros. Nuestras habilidades son dinámicas, no estáticas. 
No nacemos "bien" en matemáticas. Mejoramos las matemáticas a través del 
trabajo duro y el esfuerzo. Se alientan los errores, los desacuerdos están bien, y 
perseverar a la vez que ser extremadamente desafiado son todas las cosas que

Escritura 
Nuestros estudiantes de tercer grado tienen valiosas historias y conocimientos para 
compartir, ¡y sus palabras merecen ser leídas! Durante todo el año escolar, los 
estudiantes se verán como verdaderos escritores. Planeamos lograr esto 
implementando un modelo de taller para enseñar el arte de la escritura. Esto 
significa que los estudiantes aprenderán, entenderán y utilizarán el proceso de 
escritura para múltiples escritos durante todo el año. Los estudiantes aprenderán 
cómo los auténticos autores generan ideas, redactan historias, revisan y editan su 
trabajo, y finalmente publican una pieza propia terminada. Vamos a examinar de 
cerca el trabajo y las estrategias utilizadas por los escritores profesionales, y seguir

que están a su nivel de lectura. 
● Los lectores seleccionan sus propios libros de "justo para ellos". 
● Los lectores respetan el tiempo de lectura de cada uno y leen vidas. 
● Los lectores tienen oportunidades diarias para hablar sobre sus libros de 
maneras genuinas. 
● Los lectores no sólo leen las palabras, sino también entienden la historia. 
 
 
¿Cómo será el taller de lectura? 
 
Mini Lección 
Cada sesión del Taller de Lectura comenzará con una mini lección que dura 
aproximadamente 10 minutos. Cada mini lección se centrará en una estrategia de lectura y 
se basará a menudo en el trabajo de un Autor Mentor. 
 
Tiempo de Lectura Independiente con Instrucción 
Los niños participan en el tiempo de lectura independiente. Durante este tiempo el maestro 
está haciendo lo siguiente: 
● Conferencias de lectura - escuchar a su estudiante leer cualquiera de sus libros.

○ que están en su nivel de lectura instruccional. 
● Grupos de Estrategia - Estos grupos pueden ser compuestos de niños en una 
variedad de niveles de lectura, pero todos necesitan instrucción adicional en una 
estrategia / habilidad dada. 
 
 
 
 
Registros de Lectura 
 
Éstos son una herramienta usadas por el equipo de tercer grado, usted, y su profesora para 
descubrir quiénes son como lector. Podemos utilizar los registros de lectura para establecer 
objetivos como lectores. Por favor, llene el registro con integridad. Si su hijo pierde una 
noche de lectura porque está ocupado en ir al fútbol o tuvo un evento familiar, entonces no 
anote ninguna lectura para esa noche. Cuando nos encontremos nuevamente más tarde 
con su estudiante de tercer grado, podríamos notar que cada martes es una noche muy 
ocupada para ellos y pedirles que doblen su lectura en otra noche. Ayude por favor a 
apoyar sus estudiantes recordándoles sobre su registro de la lectura y cerciorándose de 
que están trayendo su carpeta de la vida de la lectura de nuevo a la escuela todos los días.
