The Catwalk Shuttle System (CWS) may be otherwise called the Tubular Shuttle, or the Cat Walk Machine (CWM).

Outline the purpose of the Pipe Catwalk Shuttle System (CWS).

The Catwalk Shuttle is designed for handling tubulars (Drillpipe, Drill Collars, and Casing up to 20” diameter) to and from
the drill floor and pipe bays assisted by the knuckle boom crane. Casing of 20” to 38” can also be handled by use of the
shuttle when under Manual Control conditions.
The loaded tubular can be transported to be delivered to either of the Mouseholes, (with Foxholes), the PRS Pipe Handler in
conjunction with the Pick-Up Elevator, and Top Drive with the BX elevators.
The unit has flanged wheels that allow the catwalk Skate to run along rails on the Support Structure and onto the drillfloor
up to the Well Center.

The unit is supplied with fluid at 3,000 psi pressure from the Ringmain and Hydraulic Power Unit. Any hydraulic leaks
should be immediately reported and attended to prevent environmental pollution and for safety reasons.

Main components of the Catwalk Shuttle System.

Identify the major components of the Catwalk Shuttle.

 Support Structure; frame that extends level from the drillfloor and supported by the Cantilever deck

Identify the Skate longitudinal drive mechanism.

The catwalk Skate is driven by a hydraulic motor operating a pinion gear wheel onto a toothed rack.
The hydraulic drive motor and gearbox assembly for the Skate is vertically mounted and located at the forward end of the
skate assembly. The lower drive pinion engages with the toothed rack to move the whole Skate structure along the length
of the rails. An electronic Encoder (digital counter) is meshed onto the rack and signals the Skate position back to the
computer Central Processor Unit.

The Skate motor is fitted with a Fail-Safe brake for locking the Skate at a stop / park position. In the event of a HPU
system failure and no fluid pressure the spring-loaded brakes will automatically set to ON to prevent a runaway.

Identify and explain the purpose of the Shuttle.

The Shuttle may also be called the Rabbit or the Trolley. The Shuttle is a small, wheeled trolley which is able to run the full
length of the Skate; it is used to push a single tubular forward toward the Tilt Ramp to facilitate connection with the pipe
handling machinery and also to drag pipe fully onto the Skate when laying-down drillpipe.

The Shuttle has three methods of travel; Chain driven towards the Drillfloor, Chain driven away from the Drillfloor, Free-
Wheel away from Drillfloor when supporting the weight of a tubular being lowered by the Pipe Racker.
The Shuttle is propelled by a chain drive driven by a hydraulic motor and gearbox situated at the Aft end of the Skate. The
chain drive also incorporates a hydraulic chain tensioning system; this can be seen underneath at the far end.

Three different Insert Plates can be fitted into the Shuttle to suit the diameter of the tubular. The Insert Plates have the
following sizes; 2”-7”, 8”-15”, and 15”-20”. The plates are stored on pins mounted on the skate at the walkway side of
the Skate (forward-end).

Locate and identify the Shuttle drive mechanism.

The Shuttle is driven back and forth by a chain drive. A hydraulic motor and gearbox at the furthermost end of the Skate
drives the chain. An Encoder counter is meshed into the chain which sends back signals to the computer CPU to control
the automatic positioning of the Shuttle.

Identify the Tilt Ramp mechanism.

The hinged Tilt Ramp raises the box-end of a tubular (lying on the Skate) up at an angle so it can be collected by the Pipe
Racker or by BX Elevators fitted to the Top Drive Pipe Handler. The lifting height is approximately 6 feet.

Tilt Ramp raises & lowers tubulars for easy collection.

Identify the Loading Table and the Tipper.

The Loading Table is a storage platform for tubulars up to 20” diameter; it can be slightly raised to roll them onto to the
bed of the Skate. Several tubulars can be stored (or collected) by the Knuckleboom Crane by means of the Loading Table.
The Tipper is a V-slot mechanism which is actuated by hydraulic cylinders. It enables a single tubular to be rolled from the
Loading Table onto the Skate

Describe the purpose of the Pipe Tail-in Arm (PTA) also known as the Catwalk Monkey.

The Catwalk Monkey is an arm designed to guide the pin end of the pipe into the box at “Stick-Up” or to guide the pin-end
when the Pipe Racker is being used. The Catwalk Monkey is suitable for use with tubular ranging from 2 ⅞” – 30”. It is
made up a number of components:

 Single Arm; this is the main structure bolted to the bed of the Skate and tilted by the cylinder.
 PTA Roller; (aka Monkey Roller) this is the white ‘V’-shaped polymer roller to guide the tubular.
 Trap; a spring-loaded, hydraulically operated arm, used to prevent the pipe from falling out of the Roller slot
 Telescopic Arm; top actuator, it centers the different sized tubulars into the Roller.

Pipe Tail-in Arm (aka the Catwalk Monkey Arm).

Identify the Dragchain and Service Loops.

The Dragchain carries the hydraulic hoses and electric signal Service Loops to the Skate and attached equipment.
The Drag chain runs in a long trough underneath the Skate to protect the service loops from damage. The drag chain
follows along the length of travel as the Skate moves backwards and forwards.

Identify the heavy load Transport Table.

The Transport Table is rated for 20 tons SWL and used for transporting heavier items of drilling equipment to the rig floor.
e.g. PS30 Power Slips. The Transport Table is removable and normally stored on deck. The Catwalk Shuttle is fitted with
securing lugs and the locking pins must be inserted used at all times when the table is in use. Any items placed on the
table must also be suitably secured before the Skate is moved.

Identify the Isolation Valve for the Ringmain Hydraulic supply.

The hydraulic supply for the catwalk shuttle is fed from the hydraulic Ring Main and main Hydraulic Power Unit.
The primary isolation valve from the Ring Main is at the Starboard side of the Cat Walk Machine CWM accessed from the
drill floor. The push the button located adjacent to the shutoff valve is used to operate the unit in the event that power is
lost but hydraulic supply is available. The push button needs to be depressed to allow local operation of the unit.

Identify the Local Controls and the operating functions available from this position.

The manual control levers will move when operated by the Remote Control hand set or by the Cyberbase chair. It is
possible to operate the levers locally, usually for fault-finding or maintenance.

Note: Do not obstruct the lever movements at any time with tools or junk; the solenoid valve may be
damaged. The valve travel and function will be inhibited if the lever movements are restricted by objects.

PIPE TAIL-IN ARM; local controls.

Describe the three methods of control of the Tubular Shuttle.

 From the portable Micro-control radio remote control panel.

 From Driller Control Room DCR Cyberbase chair (for setting/resetting of target positions).
 By the local hydraulic control valves mounted onboard the Skate (primarily for service and emergency use).

The HPU supplies hydraulic fluid to the CWM; it is controlled via electrically operated solenoid valves onboard the Skate.
The solenoid valves have handles and move according to the radio remote hand-set. The electronic Encoders record the
movements and positions of the CWM equipment via the control computer CPU. The positions and movements are
incorporated into the Anti-Collision System (ACS) also called the Zone Management System (ZMS). The system has an
Interface panel in the Local Instrument room (LIR); this collects, receives, transmits and controls the CWM via the
computer CPU.

Locate and identify the Emergency Stop push-buttons.

Three local E-STOP push-buttons are mounted on the moving Skate:

 E-Stop mounted at either side of the moving Skate nearest the Drillfloor (Port & Stbd.)
 A third E-Stop button is mounted on the Skate at the Port Forward side at the local manual controls.
 An E-Stop push-button is fitted on the wireless remote control unit.

They are activated by pushing the button and reset by turning the knob in the direction of the arrows the knob will pop up.

Note: Additionally, the unit can also be tripped via any of the Common E-Stop buttons on the Cyberbase chairs or the
Drillfloor Common E-Stop.

Identify the Wireless Micro-Remote Control Unit and the available functions.

The CWS can be operated from the Cyberbase chair or by (normally) by a portable wireless remote control unit with
joysticks and buttons. The portable unit communicates by radio signals with a fixed base unit installed inside the CWS
cabinet in the Local Equipment Room (LER). It has an ON/OFF switch; the switch can normally be left in the ON position.
When not in use, the portable remote control unit should be stored in a safe, dry place with the battery on charge.
Note: Upon completion of activities using the Remote Control Unit, the E-Stop should be depressed. This is to prevent
accidental /inadvertent functioning of the buttons or joystick resulting in uncontrolled movement of the machinery.

Describe and demonstrate use of the Wireless Remote Control (Micro Control Panel).

The LEFT joystick controls the operation of the Skate platform and the shuttle.
The RIGHT joystick controls the operation of the Tilt Ramp and the Luffing (raising/lowering) of the PTA Catwalk Monkey.

A number of buttons are referred to as “ON-OFF” buttons which control the various two position functions; e.g, telescopic
extend/ retract of the PTA (monkey); Shuttle in freewheel, well center position and unload position.

LEFT JOYSTICK: Move the joystick along the horizontal axis to move the shuttle in FWD/BWD direction. Move the joystick
along the vertical axis to move the skate in FWD/BWD direction. The speed depends on the deflection of the joystick.

In addition to “normal” operation of the different catwalk parts, the left joystick is also used to move the skate and shuttle
to different targets in Use semiautomatic mode. This is done by selecting the target button (like SKATE WELL POSITION),
selecting the belonging joystick function, and then keeping the joystick pushed in the belonging direction. The skate (in our
example) will then be run exactly to the target in the most efficient way (speed ramped up and down). The movement
stops when the target is reached, or the joystick is left alone, whichever comes first. The target is automatically deselected
when it is reached, or it can be deselected by pushing the target button a second time, or by selecting another target.

RIGHT JOYSTICK: Move the joystick along the vertical axis to raise or lower the tilt ramp to enable hook-up or
disconnection of pipes. Move the joystick along the horizontal axis to stroke the pipe tail-in-arm’s telescopic arm to and
from (in and out) the well centre. The speed of the operations is proportional to the deflection of the joysticks.

OPERATION ON/OFF button: Push the button to turn ON the controls on the remote control. Push once again to turn OFF
the controls (lamp off).

POWER ON/OFF switch: The terminal unit is switched on by setting the switch to ON, while pulling the switch. This initiates
an internal test sequence that resets all buttons and joysticks (except position buttons), and the connection to base unit is
verified. If the unit is cabled/ plugged for radio control, the BAT light emitting diode will be lit. Turn the unit off by setting
the switch to OFF. The catwalk is controlled from the unit which is switched on first.

Command buttons mounted on the Remote Control Unit.

Show familiarization with the Anti-Collision System.

The Cat Walk Shuttle System CWS is incorporated into the rig floor anti-collision system.
The Shuttle is fitted with both visual beacons and audible klaxon when in motion.

Identify the Skate locking mechanism used during rig transits.

During transit, maintenance or when not in use, the CWS can be locked at the rear parking position using a threaded pin
connection between the skate and the deck stop bumper.
