Leo Tolstoy, Tolstoy himself was born and raised in the middle of the noble

since the 16th century, even his father, Graf (Comte) Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoi,
took part in the war against Napoleon in 1812-1814 with the rank of lieutenant
colonel. Count Leo Tolstoy Nikolayevich was born in Yasnaya Polyana, his

his parents were Russian nobles, and his mother died when he was two years
ago his father also died when he was nine years old. Tolstoy became a soldier
in the Caucasus and Crimea, and after leaving the army he traveled and

B. Summary Description of the Work

Every human often feels anxiety and make unpleasant feeling in their live. It is
such a kind of feeling that so disturbing for the human psyche. Anxiety is rose by
requirements from the id, meanwhile it is collided by the superego. The ego which is
repressed by id and superego arise the anxiety. To relieve that, the ego does some
extreme way named ego defense mechanism. Ego defense mechanism is the one of
Freud’s psychoanalysis topics. Actually, the psychoanalysis is not only applied for
the human being. It is also applied for the psyche of character of a literary work.
Anna Karenina in Anna Karenina written by Leo Tolstoy is the one of characters that
does it.
She is the main character of this film. She, a married woman in Russian high
problems that repress her. When she gets the problem, she does some behaviour
which indicates her does the act of ego defense mechanism. Therefore, this paper is
aimed to find the character and characterization of the main character of Anna
Karenina, to describe the causes of anxiety that the main character has and to
describe the ego defense mechanism of the main character to relieve anxiety. All of
that would study through the psychoanalysis approach.
C. Interpreation and Evaluation
1. Discussion of the Work Organization
Anna Karenina is one of the characters who has an unhappy story about the
family. The story of his life is a tragic love story of an Aristocrat with marital ties and
his affair with the wealthy Count Vronsky. It all started when Anna arrived at a house
that was struck by misfortune for an adultery committed by Anna's younger brother,
"Stiva". It is this situation which later becomes the picture of Anna's situation,
although in her case the tolerance given by the social is lower. A bachelor, Vronsky,
fell in love at first sight at the sight of Anna's charm when met at the train station.
Vronsky, who grabbed Anna's heart, would gladly marry Anna if she was willing to
leave her husband Karenin, a government official. Even so, Anna was weak against
both the social norms of Russian society, her personal anxiety, and Karenin's
indecision. In the end Anna and Vronsky fled to Italy, but there they were having
trouble making friends with their classmates. After returning to Russia, Anna avoided
the people around her and felt increasingly isolated and anxious. Vronsky on the other
hand, still gained freedom in his social life. Anna increasingly felt paranoid and
possessive of the image she had for Vronsky's affair. Anna eventually loses control of
herself, then loses her life where she first meets Vronsky, her tragic love. Besides
Anna, another highlight is Levin, a landlord who wants to marry Kitty, sister-in-law
of Anna's sister. The story revolves around her struggle to get Kitty's heart, managing
her land, her marriage, her personal problems, until the birth of her first child. As a
novel transition between a realist and a modernist, the novel explores a wide range of
topics. These topics include criticism of Russia's feudal system at the time, in other
words politics. Themes covered also have a wide range. The themes include
hypocrisy, jealousy, trust, loyalty, family concepts, social environment, progress,
physical passion, to the different lifestyles of cities and villages. The novel was first
published in a series on The Russian Messenger from 1873 to 1877 in 8 parts. The full
novel then appeared in 1878. Anna Karenina was the first work that Tolstoy claimed
to be a true novel. In this case, Dostoyevski states Anna Karenina as a flawless
artwork. It was also approved by Vladimir Nabokov and William Faulkner, as the
best-written novel. The popularity of this novel puts him in the top 10 best novels
according to Time magazine in 2007. Another admission is asked by the repeated
adaptation of this novel. Starting from 1911 until the end of 2013. This shows that
Anna Karenina is a timeless story. Pamor and the success of Anna Karenina as a
novel and Leo Tolstoy as the author is not without basis. Writing style in the form of
narration of a third person provides an interesting picture and point of view for the
reader. All of these descriptions are written in a flowing narrative. Tolstoy's success
describes his political views through conflict between characters is another advantage
of this novel. He also successfully gave his observations of ideology, behavior and
ideas from contemporary Russia through Levin's character. Many things about this
book and the author who can be discussed. One proof of this is the still adaptation of
this story until 2013, which again adds to the list of people who provide the
perspective and interpretation of the story. After reading a bit, it's hard to put it back
before it finishes. So much charm can still be explored from one of the best classics of
all time.
2. Discussion of the Work Style
a. What Is Psychoanalysis
- Psychoanalysis has become extremely familiar today to the general
public (from the West) after a long time being either rejected or adulterated.
But the success of the 5th decade of the 20th century, especially in Europe, has
paradoxically estranged it from its essence.
because of the interest generated by
psychoanalytic therapy. We could even say that the therapy was eclipsed by
the virtues of applied psychoanalysis. The psychoanalysis applied in literature,
sociology, anthropology and ethnology, in religion and mythology has
prompted the interest of an audience who had no calling to the clinical sphere.
Finally, psychoanalysis has also been highlighted by media coverage
on the most common channels: radio, TV or cinema. Famous movies brought
to the forefront famous psychoanalysts like Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung.
Several documentaries have been dedicated to Freud's life and work, and even
a TV series that has amazed by the accuracy of the information provided.
The multitude and diversity of the sources of data on psychoanalysis today
signal a major problem: psychoanalysis is no longer clearly defined in the eyes
of the general public. No one knows today exactly what the psychoanalysis is.
Unfortunately, there is no effort to clarify this.
That is why we need to clarify first of all what psychoanalysis is. Then
we will follow the other steps to enter the mystery of this strange discipline.
