Wednesday

From Sonic Learning- The Role of Sleep

in the Childhood Brain

… a few general approaches are recommended as first

steps:

*A child should have as regular a bedtime and waking

schedule as possible and an adequate amount of vigorous
play during the day.

*Exposure to TV and computers should be minimal in the

hour or two before bedtime.

*There should be some type of relaxing pre-bedtime

routine, such as reading a story.

We Are Learning About…

Reading/Writing-We will be focusing on routines for our daily literacy
practice this week. In class the students work in stations with other students
to focus on different areas of literacy (reading/looking at books, writing,
working with words/alphabet, and listening to books being read). We
introduced some of these stations last week and this week will focus on
exact behaviours and expectations for success! We are slowly beginning more
focused instruction around letter knowledge, sounds, and beginning writing
skills. With Year 2 students we are beginning assessments this week to
develop learning goals.

Math- We will focus on some problem solving skills this week in math. We
will look at solving simple addition problems and modeling our thinking. We
will also practice how we COMMUNICATE our understanding of addition
problems. Additionally, Year 1 will be focusing specifically on representing and
identifying numbers 1-20.

Year 1/2 Weekly Update

Unit of Inquiry- Healthy Choices

As we investigated making choices for healthy lifestyles last week we discussed how important
exercise, being outside, sleep and rest, and healthy food choices are in our lives. The kids thought
about what that word choice really means. We tied this into our math work, looking at how we can
show choices on a graph (bar graph, pictograph, and tally graph). We also thought about ways we can
improve our sleep and rest. We practiced meditating, listening to calming music/sounds, and learned
about Native American Dream Catchers that are supposed to catch bad dreams and improve your
sleep. We began working on creating our own dream catchers to take home. This week we will
continue our focus on making choices and look at consequences of choices.
