OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify major cell organelle for plants and animals and describe their individual functions.
2. Compare plant and animal Cells.
3. Construct a model to represent each cell type.
ASSESSMENT: KEY POINTS:
Cell
Formative/Summative Assessment Plant Cell
Animal cell
organelles
ELICIT: 5 MINUTES
Ask the students the following questions to collect their prior knowledge about the lesson.
What is cell?
Are plant and animal made up of cell? Why?
Is Cell having its own parts?
ENGAGE: 5 MINUTES
Learning Cycle
Students will be given a worksheet with definitions and graphics (pictures) of both plant and
animal parts.
Students will be asked to insert each function and picture with the correct organelle.
Students will call upon to share to share out to the class randomly.
EXPLORE: 10 MINUTES
The class will be divided into 6 given the materials in simulating various cell parts.
Materials:
Petri dish
Curve macaroni
Cornstarch
Lima bean
Black eyepiece
Baby lima pea
Part 1. Assemble the materials into what they believe to be a close replica of a plant or
animal cell.
EXPLAIN: 10 MINUTES
Guide questions:
Part 1.
1. Explain their selection of various pieces to represent specific organelle.
ELABORATE: 20 MINUTES
1. Could the cell survive without (the teacher can select an organelle)? Why or why not?
2. Students will view a brief video comparing and contrasting plant and animal cell.
A look inside the cell.
EVALUATE: 10 MINUTES
place the letter of the word that matches the definition
1._____Nucleus a) protects the cell and allows nutrients to come into the cell
2._____Mitochondria b) uses sunlight energy to produce food (glucose)
3._____Cell Wall c) the gel like fluid that holds the organelles
4._____Cell Membrane d) organism whose cell contain a nucleus, other organelle within a membrane
and a rigid cell wall
5._____Cytoplasm e) stores food water and nutrients
6._____Chloroplast f) organism whose cell contain a nucleus, other organelle within a membrane
but lack cell walls & chloroplast
7._____Vacuoles g) provides shape for plant cells
8._____Plant cell h) produces energy
9._____Animal cell i) directs all activities of the cell
