Attendance Expectations
1. The student is expected to be present and participate in all clinical activities related to their clinical
assignments. You will keep the same relative hours as the residents during each clinical assignment.
2. Please refer to the USACOM Student Attendance Policy for process and procedure for requesting time off
other than those noted below.
3. Please note that certain student absences may still necessitate make up time at the discretion of the
clerkship director, and when appropriate, consultation with the Associate Dean of Medical Education and
Student Affairs.
4. Temporary brief excuses from clinical duty for events such as those related to career advising, faculty
mentor meetings, etc. must be discussed with the clerkship director in advance. A resident or your wards
attending should not grant approval without discussing with the clerkship director first.
5. Failure to notify and obtain appropriate approval for any absence can result in remediation or failure of
a portion or the entirety of the clerkship.
6. Days Off
a. Inpatient Experience: Students will have one weekend day off each week. Students can select the day
off on the weekend that works best for the ward team and them.
b. Stanton Road Clinic/IPE Experience: Students will have the weekends off.
c. Elective Experience: Students will have the weekends off unless otherwise noted. Students are not
expected to take call with their assigned preceptor or clinical experience.
d. Assignment Switching: Students will have the 4th and 8th weekend free of clinical duty. In addition, the
Friday afternoon before this weekend will be made available to the student as independent study free
of assigned clerkship clinical duty. Students are expected to use this weekend to study and complete
Aquifer case assignments.
e. NBME Preparation: During the last week of the rotation, students will have the final Wednesday
afternoon after the end-of-clerkship town hall and the final Thursday free of assigned clerkship clinical
duty. This time is meant to be used for independent study for NBME preparation.
f. School Holidays: The clerkship will observe those holidays officially recognized by the USACOM.
