UKRAINE: First Aid

Project summary:

First Aid (FA) is one of the top priorities for the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS), implemented through organizing training sessions for the
general population. A range of laws and safety programmes have been adopted to improve safety standards for Ukrainians, but due to the lack of
governmental funding the training system to implement these programmes collapsed. Consequently, the rates of industrial, traffic, and household
accidents, as well as injuries to children, remain high. Some four million people are injured every year. Ukraine is also among those countries with
the highest rate of road accidents in Europe. Post-crash analyses have shown that many deaths could have been prevented if prompt and adequate
first aid had been provided.

The URCS First Aid Training Programme was launched in 1998. At present, half of its branches possess training manuals, equipment, and visual
aids. Some branches host First Aid training centres.

Previous experience shows that in order to improve the programme, there is a need to establish training centres in Red Cross medical social rooms,
and there is a deep need for reference books to be provided to course participants.

URCS cooperates closely with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Scientific -Practical Centre for Emergency Medicine in the
implementation of its first aid training programme.

The log frame matrix of the programme is attached. For a complete programme description please contact the Minsk Delegation.
