CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The mobile phone is going to be integral part of our daily life, it used to interact
among people in which they can create, share, and exchange information and ideas in
virtual communities and networks (Blumstock& Eagle, 2010). The big question is "How
the mobile phones affect the academic performance of students?".

Nowadays, Cellphone affect the culture as well as education. Even a casual

observation of today's generation will reveal cellphones being used, both overtly and
covertly (Tindell & Bohlander, 2012). As mobile phones are continually developing, the
device appears capable of contributing to student and their academic performance. And
it has influenced the multiple aspects of our daily lives, particularly those who are studying
(Hossain, 2012).

Indeed, the invention of mobile phones had really affect people on how they live
but it brings positive and negative effects to humans (Wu, 2019). Similarly, it has
advantages and disadvantages. In the end, all of it depends on the user on how they are
going to manipulate the mobile phone in a different way. Otherwise cell phones are
considered as most personal device to us and we should make an optimal use of them.
(Suryanarayana, 2015)

According to Barker, Krull, and Mallinson (2006), the impacts of mobile phone
technologies on learning are portability, collaboration and motivation enhancing students,
parents and teachers’ education system. As it stated by Malter & Salter (2010)
Technologies makes it easier for the students to access information regarding to their
studies but had observed that the youth have consistently displayed higher level of
attachment to their mobile phones which could serve as distraction to them because of
the time channeled to the devices.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The researchers have selected Grade 11 STEM students because they are
more exposed to technology and mobile phones in terms of academic and personal
purposes. Five students coming from 11 sections of Grade 11 STEM strand will complete
the 55 respondents to be surveyed for this study. Students that do not have mobile
phones are not included as the respondents for this study.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the positive effects of mobile phones on the academic performance of STEM
students?

2. What are the negative effects of mobile phones on the academic performance of STEM
students?

METHODOLOGY

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers will use convenience sampling. It is a non-probability sampling

technique wherein the subjects are accessible of their proximity to the researchers. As
the name implies, the respondents are selected because they are convenient and anyone
has a chance to become a participant. This sampling technique will be helpful to the
researchers to gather the data. The study will be composed only of 55 respondents and
will select 5 students in each Grade 11 STEM section from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng
Valenzuela. After conducting the interview, the researchers will interpret and analyze the
collected data that has been gathered from the respondents

STSTISTICAL TREATMENT

The statistical treatment that will be used by the researchers in the study is
weighted mean and the statistical tool used in the study is Likert scale. To interpret the
data effectively, the researchers will employ the weighted mean.

This will be used to determine the different perspectives of students on effects of

mobile phones to the academic performance of STEM students.

(𝑁𝑅4 )(𝑊4 )+(𝑁𝑅3 )(𝑊3 )+(𝑁𝑅2 )(𝑊2 )+(𝑁𝑅1 )(𝑊1 )

X= ∑ 𝑁𝑅

Whereas, W = Weighted Mean of each cluster, and NR = Number of Respondents

DATA GATHERING

The Likert Scale integrated with the advantages and disadvantages of using
mobile phones. Next is the researchers will ask for the research adviser's approval of the
questionnaire. Once the questionnaire is approved, the researchers can now go to the
respondents, which are chosen using convenience sampling, to gather data.

In giving the questionnaire to the respondents, the researchers will ask permission
to the teacher-in-charge during the time of data gathering. After data gathering, the
researchers will analyze the information attained and since Likert Scale is used, the
researchers will tally and compute for the weighted mean of the answers. Then, the
researchers will interpret the data gathered to further have a concrete result.

Table 1 shows the statements number 1 to 10 which represents the positive effects of
mobile phones, the weighted mean of the statements that represent the answer of the
respondents, and the verbal interpretation that represents the weighted mean.

Statement 7 "I can download applications that are beneficial in studying and enhancing
my knowledge" obtained the highest weighted mean of 3.46 and a verbal interpretation of
"Strongly Agree". Followed by statement 8 "I can easily search for the meaning of a certain word
I don't know" that gained a weighted mean of 3.45 and a "Strongly Agree" verbal interpretation.
Third to the highest is the statement 9 "Communication is easier" obtained a weighted mean of
3.42 and a verbal interpretation of "Strongly Agree", followed by statement 1 "I can do
assignments easier with the use of my mobile phone" obtained a weighted mean of 3.36 and a
verbal interpretation of "Strongly Agree" and statement 6 "Mobile phone helps me in finishing
activities in the subject Empowerment Technology" that also obtained the same verbal
interpretation (Strongly Agree) and the same weighted mean (3.36).

Statement 5 "I am more aware of the events that are happening in the school" follows with
a weighted mean of 3.35 and a verbal interpretation of "Strongly Agree". Statement 3 that they
can "effortlessly read books in PDF through the use of mobile phone" with a weighted mean of
3.24 follows, It was followed by statement 10 "My productivity in terms of academic performance
is increased with the help of my mobile phone" with a weighted mean 3.22 and a verbal
interpretation of "Agree". Students also agreed in statement 2 that they can "easily take down
notes using mobile phone" with a weighted mean of 3.11. Lastly, students agreed with statement
4 that they can "easily understand math problems with the use of various applications through
mobile phone" with a weighted mean of 2.84 and a verbal interpretation of "Agree".

Overall, these interpretations show that mobile phones has strong positive effects on the
academic performance of the students. It can be seen that half of the statements gains a "Strongly
Agree" verbal interpretation. Related to these findings, it is stated by Carter (2014) that when
students have mobile phones, they tend to learn more and it have a positive outcome on the class.
The impact of these devices to the academic learning of the students has continue to increase.
Mobile phones can easily access information that students need in their study. It is also an
effective teaching tool and convenience for both students

Similarly, to Balfagih (2017), the use of mobile phones helps to improve the learning skills
of the students , these devices help the students in academic performance however it also has a
negative effect in their academic performance because it offers a number of distractions because
some students bring mobile phones in class just to access their social media accounts. Mobile
phones interfere with their academic learning.Students should be studying but instead, they use
their mobile phones to do other things that are not related to their studies.

Table 2 shows the statements number 11 to 20 which represents the negative

effects of mobile phones, the weighted mean of the statements that represent the answer
of the respondents, and the verbal interpretation that represents the weighted mean.

Number 16 “I can study without being tempted to use my mobile phone” obtained
the highest weighted mean of 2.95 and a verbal interpretation of agree (SA) followed by
number 11 “I use my mobile phone for entertainment purposes than academic” same as
number 13 “I cannot last a day without using my phone”, with a weighted mean of 2.93
and a verbal interpretation of agree (A). In the number 14 “I tend to be tardy when I use
my mobile phone” same as number 20 “At home, I spend more time using my mobile
phone than doing assignment, with a weighted mean of 2.78 and also have agree (A),
and followed by number 18 “I use my mobile phone to check my social media accounts
first before doing school works with a weighted mean 2.76 with a verbal interpretation of
agree (A). In the other hand the number 15 “I cannot concentrate on studying if I am using
my mobile phone and followed by the number 17 “I am dependent on my mobile phone
with a weighted mean 2.56. In the number 19 “I prefer to use my mobile phone rather
than to review with a weighted mean of 2.53. Lastly “I am playing mobile games even
when in class with a weighted mean of 2.16 and a verbal interpretation of disagree (D).
In conclusion, it was found out that mobile phones has also negative effects on the
academic performance of the students.

According to Tindura, 2015, Many researchers find out that the usage of mobile
phones in class result in having a low GPA for the reason that it distracts the students
while in class, students use social network, texting or chatting than listening to their
teachers. In this study the researchers ask the respondents a question about the purpose
of mobile phones in classroom, some of the respondents said that students shouldn’t use
mobile phones. Some other students said that the mobile phone technology help them to
increase their academic performance. Students also said that the level of quality
education has increase because of mobile phone.
