CHART COMPARISONS

There are certain classic combinations of Sun sign that often produce close relationships.
The commonest of these are relationships between signs of the same element, and between
opposite signs, although people born under adjacent Sun signs also often experience a deep
attraction. Every combination of sign produces difficulties as well as benefits and the easiest
way to understand these is by looking at the combination of elements.

Fire-Fire
These people share their enthusiasm, energy and adventurous spirits, but a distaste for
compromise and an inability to co-operate can lead to disagreement.

Fire-Earth
This is an interesting combination as, ironically, the attraction between these signs rests in
their profound differences. The energetic fire person is able to give full vent to that
element's adventurous instincts in the full knowledge that the earth partner will provide
security, continuity and stability. Meanwhile the earth partner can remain as stodgy as
desired, relying on the fire partner to work for change and create opportunities. But there
can be sharp differences, the earth partner resenting fire's impulsive need for change, and
fire becoming impossibly irritated with earth's lack of ambition.

Fire-Air
This relationship is often extremely lively as air's intellect and fire's enthusiasm spark off
interesting ideas and a willingness to change. Differences are often settled quickly.
However, difficulty in expressing feelings and a tendency to ignore practical necessities can
produce long-term problems.

Fire-Water
These element share powerful emotions but their feelings are of very different kinds and
misunderstanding is more common than understanding. Water is dismayed by fire's
complete lack of sensitivity and fire is completely baffled by water's quiet introverted
secrecy and apparent lack of worldly ambition. Casual friendships work better than close
relationships as the latter often suffer from deep emotional conflict.

Earth-Earth
Two people both with Suns in earth signs share a common outlook on life, and a joint
fondness for stability and routine can lead to long-lasting relationships. However, there can
be a lack of stimulation, emotional depth and ambition, and even when these relationships
last for a long time there can be an absence of real feeling.

Earth-Air
These elements can be brought together by self-interest. Earth benefits from air's ideas and
air gains from earth's practical skills. The result is a relationship founded on common sense,
but together these elements lack emotional depth and worldly ambition.
Earth-Water
Earth and water often form deep and lasting friendships. They are comfortable with each
other and water admires earth's practical skills as much as earth is fascinated by water's
emotional depth and sensitivity. But if the relationship is too close then long-term irritation
can set in; earth loses patience with water's muddled impracticality and water becomes
bored by earth's love or order and routine.

Air-Air
People with Suns in air signs, share a lively and curious approach to life and can find each
other immensely stimulating. There is usually a great deal of communication but deeper
feelings are all too easily ignored with the result that long-term problems can arise. The
relationship tends to be impractical although this is not necessarily a problem.

Air-Water
This can be a highly stimulating combination; air's clarity of thought and water's intuition
and sensitivity produce an interesting and imaginative relationship. In closer relationships
misunderstandings may arise which add to the difficulties in dealing with practical issues.

Water-Water
Mutual understanding is often deep and a shared longing for romantic love can take these
people into a world of dreams and fantasy. When things go wrong, however, they tend to
wallow in their troubles. They may find it impossible to plane for the future.

In general the presence of Suns in the same sign is not an indication of a long terms
relationship because as both partners have the same basic strengths and weaknesses, they
fail to provide either mutual stimulation or balance.

People with Suns in adjacent signs (such as Aries-Taurus or Capricorn-Sagittarius) and

opposite signs (such as Taurus-Scorpio or Aries-Libra) are often very close, as each
provides something that the other needs, bringing a welcome balance, but serious
differences can lead to deep arguments.

Suns in signs that are sextile to each other (such as Pisces-Taurus or Aquarius-Aries) can
produce good friendships, but the differences between them may work against long term
relationships.

Suns in signs that are in a square to each other (such as Pisces-Gemini or Aries-Capricorn)
are often extremely stimulating but the very differences that make for a lively friendship
may place obstacles in the way of closer relationships.

Most favoured of all are relationships produced by Sun in signs that are in trine to each
other (such as Pisces-Scorpio or Libra-Gemini) as these have enough similarities to provide
deep understanding but sufficient differences to create interest and stimulation.

In chart comparison also look for aspects from one person's chart to the North Node of the
other, and vice versa.

THE NODES
An additional astrological factor to consider is the Moon's north node which often reveal
strong attraction between people. The astrological reason in clear. In the birth chart, the
north node represents the direction in which a person is traveling through life, the
challenges he or she must face and the lessons that must be learnt in order to change. People
with Sun, Moon or Ascendant in conjunction to another's North Node become those in
whom the challenges are met and from whom the lessons can be learnt. For example, a
person with the north node in Aquarius may need to become more independent, and will
learn self-reliance from encounters with those with the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant in
Aquarius.
