1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
EnergyX is designing the hydrostatic cell shown in Figure 1 and will manufacture the cell in February ready
for customer delivery in March 2019. As part of the delivery, EnergyX must demonstrate that the cell is
compliant with the EN 13445 standard. To support this, EnergyX has invited Abercus to prepare a proposal for
a scope of finite element analysis (FEA) to demonstrate compliance through the design by analysis route. This
document outlines Abercus’ proposed methodology and pricing/schedule to undertake the work.
1.2 Objectives
Demonstrate compliance of the hydrostatic cell with the EN 13445 standard using the design by analysis route.
Abercus operates an Integrated Management System (IMS) which ensures that all work is undertaken in
accordance with ISO 9001:2015 and the supporting quality system supplement (QSS) by NAFEMS, the
international association for the engineering modelling, analysis and simulation community.
The NAFEMS QSS requires all simulation studies to be classified in terms of risk, according to one of the
three risk categories: vital (public disaster), important or advisory. The current study is classified as advisory.
Abercus is registered with FPAL. In line with its IMS, Abercus will seek client feedback through the
FPAL system upon completion of the project, as part of its efforts to continually improve performance.
2 TECHNICAL APPROACH
The latest revision of the EN 13445 standard was published in 2014. Abercus is familiar with the previous
revision and the methodology described here is based upon the design by analysis route from the previous
revision (EN 13445-3, Annex B). It is not expected that the methodology will have changed significantly for
the latest revision, but this will need to be confirmed at the start of the project.
For the temperature range of interest (0-50 °C, which is well below the thermal creep range for the material),
the design by analysis route requires five individual design checks using the finite element method:
• Gross Plastic Deformation Design Check (GPD-DC), to assess the global deformation of the cell in
operation
• Progressive Plastic Deformation Design Check (PD-DC), to assess global damage due to repeated
loading
• Stability Design Check (S-DC), to assess buckling due to imperfect manufacture and local stress
concentration features
• Fatigue Design Check (F-DC), to assess fatigue caused by local features such as welds or imperfect
surface finish, and
• Static Equilibrium Design Check (SE-DC), to assess the stability of the cell in situ.
• the cell will be cycled more than 500 times during the course of its planned 15 year lifetime, so design
checks PD-DC and F-DC are required
• the cell will be house within a building and, therefore, will not be subjected to external environmental
loading.
3 DELIVERABLES
• a basis of analysis document outlining the assumptions that will be used for the analysis, which must
be agreed before the start of the analysis
Abercus offers to undertake the proposed scope of work 6000 GBP (excluding VAT).
Project kick-off will be agreed between Abercus and EnergyX upon receipt of all required information and a
valid purchase order. Due to existing commitments, Abercus’ earliest start date is 14 January 2019 and the
earliest date for the delivery of the technical report is the first week in February.
Any modifications to the FEA geometry model or agreed information following the start of the analysis causing
delay and/or repetition of work that is not due to Abercus will be charged at 800 GBP/day.
