Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training Guidelines

Introduction:

The Occupational Safety and Health Standards were formulated in 1978 in compliance with the
constitutional mandate to safeguard the workers’ social and economic well-being as well as his/her
physical safety and health in the workplace. One of the important requirements of the OSHS is the
Commented [U1]: Jec, please include the requirement for a
safety officers. Also, what type of industries are required to have
BOSH trained security officers.
In order for companies to ensure that the OSH standards are in place, security officer/s has to
undergo the BOSH Training for certification. In fact, the OSHA standards require for six different
employee categories/groups to be trained. Commented [U2]: Jec, can you include the reasons why these
type of employee categories need to be trained?

The BOSH Training aims to provide employees with a common understanding of the framework,
to support their safety and health programs, and train them on the general aspects of the university’s
safety and health program.

The following training guidelines apply to the training requirements found in the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s). The guidelines will include the frequency/duration,
documentation/assurance, participant’s qualifications and training methods.

Objectives:

By the end of the 40-hour module, the participants will be able to:

 Enumerate the steps for effective accident investigations;
 Prepare documentations for a safety meeting;
 Outline the components of a health and safety program

Consultant’s Commitment:

The consultant will provide the following:

1. Training manuals
2. Certificate of Completion

Documentation and Assurance of Training Outputs:

The standards require evidence of a formal training plan or training materials, or both, as well as
written documents certifying the successful completion of the required training. In OSHA’s FEOSH
standard, the training of employees should be, “commensurate with the scope of their assigned
responsibilities.” It is necessary for some method of documentation to be in place. There should be
assurance that employees have not only taken the training, but they have “understood” the training.
Assurance of the effectiveness of training is also enhanced by obtaining the perspectives of the trainee,
the workplace and/or the organization. A roll-out plan will be required from the training participants,
particularly those internal participants (from UZ) so the group may share the knowledge and hone their
skills in the training area.
