Motor Overview
Motor

It is simple in construction, rugged and reliable.

It’s speed is practically constant, regardless of
load, when operated within the normal working
range.
Schlumberger Private

The motor is a three phase,

squirrel cage, two pole induction design.

Motor – 3 phase
• The three power phases are "Wye" connected within the
motor itself to establish a "neutral" point.
PHASE 1
PHASE 2
PHASE 3

Motor – 3 phase, two pole

Because of the way the stator

is wound, the three phase
power establishes a two pole

magnetic field within the stator.

Motor- 3 phase, 2 pole, induction
type
• Current is "induced" in the rotor by
the magnetic field movement of N
the stator. This current creates a
Force
magnetic field in the rotor. The
+
Motion

rotor magnetic field will turn to try

Schlumberger Private

Force
to catch up to the stator field.
– If we attach a shaft to the rotor, we S
can turn this to useful work.
Motor – 3 phase, 2 pole,
asynchronous, induction type
• The rotor will try but never quite catch up to the stator
field (which turns at 3600 RPM - 60 Hz). It will be
somewhat slower and this difference in speed is called
slip.
Schlumberger Private

• Slip is necessary as a rotor turning at 3600 RPM would

no longer be moving with respect to the magnetic field
hence no current could be induced.
Motor Performance
• The performance of the motor changes as the load on the
motor changes. Just as with pumps, motors will also
have "performance curves".

Motor - Components
• The stator is the core or electrical field
of the motor
• Rotating shaft and rotor assembly
• Insulation system
Schlumberger Private

• Lubrication and cooling system

Motor - Series

The housing can different diameters:

3.75” = 375 series

4.56” = 456 series

5.40” = 540 series

Schlumberger Private

5.62” = 562 series

7.38” = 738 series

The housing material can also be chosen for different applications,

depending upon the environment.
Stator

The stator is composed of the the

housing material for a desired
diameter, the stator core, and the
stator windings .
Schlumberger Private

The housing material forms the

cover for the motor and is threaded
at both ends for head and base
components.

Insulation System

• Motor is hand wound using copper windings insulated with either

Polyimid (Kapton) or PEEK material

• Wire size determined by voltage and current rating of the motor

Schlumberger Private

• Slotliner used to insulate windings from laminations

• Insulation system rated to 450F

• Current flowing through windings create electro magnetic field

Rotor

The rotor is made up of rotor

laminations that are smaller in
diameter from the stator
laminations and these creates

the iron core. Inside each slot

are copper bars with
supporting copper end rings.

Rotor Bearings

• Rotor Bearings provide radial

stabilization to the shaft and
rotor assembly
• Placed between each rotor

Tape-In Design
Cooling System
• Heat generated inside the motor is evenly distributed
throughout by the circulation of the motor’s oil.
• Heat is then drawn off by the produced fluid on the way to
the intake
Schlumberger Private

• Therefore motor must be installed above the perforations

• Fluid velocity has to be greater than 1 foot / second in
order to get sufficient cooling

Motor - Configurations
• The motors can be mated in tandem configuration to create
the desired Horsepower required for each application
• Single Tandem = S No flexibility
• Upper Tandem = UT Can mate to LT/CT,UMB or DME
Schlumberger Private

• Lower Tandem = LT Can mate to UT or CT

• Center Tandem = CT Can mate to UT/CT/LT, UMB or DME
562 Motor Limits
• 4160 volts is max. at the pothead under any conditions.

• 750 Hp max. at 60 Hz for standard shaft

• 1200 Hp max. at 60 Hz. for high strength shaft

• 150 amps max. for standard motor head and pothead

Schlumberger Private

• 170 amp motor requires special motor head and pothead

that will not fit in 7 inch casing
