Final Year Project Details:

A. Project Title: Design and Development of Mars Rover with

obstacle and ditch detection and avoidance
B. Project Start Date: September’2019
C. Project Finish Date: July’2020
D. Project Summary (less than 200
words)
Mars has been the center of attention of scientists and engineers in the past decade due to the fact
that there is a possibility of life there. The atmosphere of Mars is harsh, unlike Earth. To confirm
the possibility of life there we can send a device that collects data and information for us.

Mars Rover is a motor vehicle designed specifically to explore Mars. As the surface of Mars is
different and unknown, the first purpose of such a vehicle is to travel smoothly avoiding
obstacles and ditches. The body of the Rover and especially the wheels are required to be designed
such that it can travel on any surface whether rocks or sand. Using IR Sensors or cameras, it will
determine whether the area ahead is free of obstacles or not, the algorithm will decide to pass the
obstacle or avoid depending on the size of the obstacle.

E. Project Objectives:

 Designing a rover which can run in an environment similar to that of Mars

 Smooth performance of the rover on rough terrain of Mars
 Obstacle detection and avoidance through IR sensor, cameras or image processing
 Ditch detection and avoidance
 Wireless communication with the base station (optional)

F. Project Implementation Method

Design and assembly of the Mars Rover with pre-defined mission
Detection of obstacles through image processing and IR sensors
