Introduction

Education is a right for every human. Through education, we can gain knowledge

that would be beneficial for the future of every individual and for the society. These is

another way to make progress and provide a sustainable development for all. With all

the learnings we get from school, we can gain plenty of opportunities needed when you

seek for job in the near future. Access to the internet is one of the efficient ways in order

to provide students a quality way of learning. Nowadays, the new generations are

already different from the old ones. Today’s age, the use of gadgets and seeking for the

information needed already gone far through the help of internet. Through Internet

access, the time spent in searching for books inside the library that sometimes are missing

would give the students the convenience. Learners would be able to consume less of

their time as well as money from their allowances.

Through easy internet access, students would be able to have an easy way to

gather information needed for their learning. There would be no need for them to use

much of their money just to compile activities that involves researching. According to

Douglas Murphy (2012) in his book entitled The Architecture of Failure,

“Beyond such hyperbole, the implications of the Internet for education and learning can

be understood in at least four distinct ways. One of these is the potential of the Internet

to offer individual learners increased freedom from the physical limitations of the real

world.”

The statement of Murphy means that, through the use of Internet for students’

learning they can be able to access several information that will contribute for their
development and to attain the high quality education they deserve. Unlike some books

that can be seen in the library, not all of them contain the overall info that is why the

assistance of the Internet is really needed. According to Collins and Halverson (2009) in

their book entitled Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology,

“The task of reinventing schools and universities for the Internet age involves not

only “rethinking what is important to learn” but also “rethinking learning.”

This statement means that, schools should not only view what are the things every

students should absorb in a class but also innovating other ways or method in order for

students to gain knowledge. Most especially that in the new curriculum there are already

subjects or school works such as research and with that surfing in the Internet is a must.

According to Boyd and Crawford (2012) in their book entitled Critical Questions for Big

Data,

“We are now seen to be living in an era of Big Data where computerized systems

are making available massive quantities of information produced by and about people,

things, and their interactions.”

This only means that, with those new devices that we have nowadays would also

be beneficial through the means of gathering certain information that we have in the

extensive ability of internet. This study is significant to the Administration, Parents, Students

and Future Researchers. Through this study, solutions for this concern may be given in

order to have a thorough implementation of having an easy access of internet in school’s

library and computer laboratory. Students really need to have an easy internet access

most especially that there are already school works given by the teachers that really

need thorough research for students. Without having an easy internet access, students
will be having a hard time to do research to some of their certain matter related for their

school works. Since not all students do have an internet access at home, it would give

convenience for them to just do their home works at school also through this they can

save time and money. The aim of this study if to distinguish The rate of preference among

grade 11 students towards the provision of having an easy access of internet in library

and computer laboratory.

Specific Problem

The aim of this study if to distinguish The rate of preference among grade 11

students towards the provision of having an easy access of internet in library and

computer laboratory. In this study, here are the following specific problems:

1. What is the profile of the students?

2. What is the rate of preference among grade 11 students towards the provision of

having an easy access of internet in library and computer laboratory?

3. How important is the provision of having an easy access of internet in library and

computer laboratory to the grade 11 students of Merry Child School?

Significance of the Study

This research can be beneficial for the Students, Parents, Administration and Future

Researchers.

Students. This study can benefit students in order for them to attain a better way

of learning through the use of internet. An easy access to the internet in library and

computer laboratory can give them the convenience when it comes to their school

works that need research.

Administration. This study is beneficial to the administration in order for them to

provide for their students an efficient way of learning. With that approach, the

administrations would be able to build the students’ productivity academically.

Future Researchers. This study can benefit the future researchers in order for them

to make use of this research for their hereafter study. This can also serve as their guide for

making a research study regarding this topic.

Scope and Delimitation

This study was conducted on _____,2019 at Merry Child School, Zone 7, Bulua,

Cagayan de Oro City. The researcher disseminated survey questionnaires in order to

gather the data needed for the study. The respondents were only limited among the

Grade 11 students of Merry Child School for the School Year 2019-2020. This research only

focuses on the rate of preference among grade 11 students towards the provision of

having an easy access of internet in library and computer laboratory.

Researchers of this study used the Universal Sampling wherein survey

questionnaires were being answered by the whole Grade 11 students of Merry Child

School S.Y 2019-2020 wherein there are ( ) respondents in total. In order to conduct the

surveys, researchers asked the consent of the teachers and administrators

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains the literature and studies related to the importance of the

Internet for the education of students as well as the benefits it bring to scholars.

Related Literature

School is a place where pupils can gain their knowledge through the use of any

learning instruments as well as teachers. Nowadays, there are already new ways to

retrieve information aside from the books that we have in the libraries. Internet has

already reached a wider purpose for most of the people. With the use of the internet

people, specifically the students had been given convenience for their studies. The best

any school library can do for its pupils is to provide them a well-connected internet facility

and teach them how to access it to retrieve information and other sundry sources

(Onwubiko, 2004).

According to Ebifung (2005), the essential factors for successful use of the Internet

in schools include knowledge and usage of the Internet services, training on continual

basis; availability of equipment and technical assistance; supportive administration;

collaboration with other teachers, collaboration with other students, and advanced

planning. Ebifung (2005) emphasized that students should be encouraged to use the

Internet because it has motivating factors; provides fast communication, access to

information, offers interactive activities, cooperative learning, locating research

materials, and acquiring varied writing skills.

It was also stated by Hobson (2007) that the internet and the use of personal

computers have altered many students and teachers well established habits like the way

the media is used. People nowadays used Internet in order to become updated of the

issues happening around us. This only goes to show that the utilization of the Internet

nowadays already gone far in any aspects.

Leroy (2005) stressed that the Internet is only part of the school library which helps

in liberating students from the bonds of educational entrenchment as well as quicken all

learning activities. In addition, Internet use has the potential to improve the quality of

education (Ciglaric et.al., 1998; Charp 2000; Laurillard, 1992).

Burgess (2006) enumerated the three important Internet literacies: (i) Critical

Literacy- a deep socially contextualized, and informed understanding of the Internet; (ii)

Creative Literacy- the ability to experiment with the Internet in order to create and absorb

information; and (iii) Network Literacy- the ability and the impulse to effectively and

ethically manipulate a range of the Internet technologies to communicate and

collaboratively construct and hare knowledge.

According to Charp, Internet brought numerous positive changes to teachers and

instructors. Dryli and Kinnaman (1996), the Internet enables students to find information

as well as allowing them to think critically and creatively, to become collaborative and

cooperative workers and to solve problems. As Nentwich (2003) stated the other side is

organizing, structuring and evaluating the information space.

Though motivated to use, they identified factor such as easy access, lack of good

guidance, inability to get required information as barriers to their full exploitation of the
Internet. Without access to the Internet, the ICTs cannot provide meaningful impact on

the teaching and learning of the students.

By those related literature stated above, it clearly shows how the Internet became

a necessity to everybody most especially to the students nowadays. However, proper

guidance towards the students is still a must.

Related Studies

Kayode-Edebor (2011) examined the use, and specific purposes for which

secondary students use the Internet. The study was based on cyber cafes in Ibadan,

Nigeria, and purposively target population of secondary school students who visited 20

cyber cafes for Internet surfing. On analysis of 261 of 300 questionnaires administered,

that study indicated that 59% of the respondents perceive using the Internet as an

inexpensive modern technology; 56.3% of the students affirmed that they receive a lot of

encouragement form the school teachers to use the Internet.

According to the study conducted by Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences

28 (2011) 606 – 61 about the overall self-efficacy results of the students in using the

internet as an educational tool, most of the participants (80%) declared that they use

search engines on the Internet and as they were preparatory school students who

have been learning English, they stated that they used e-dictionaries on the Internet

with a high percentage (67%). As EMU English Preparatory School instructors

encourage their students to create and join the Facebook group of their classes

in order to discuss class-related topics, considerable amount of participants (65%)

confirmed that they used the Internet to talk about school subjects and homework.

Also, students are expected to prepare an oral presentation as part of their

assessments so the majority asserted that they used the Internet to find source of

information, to download pictures or photos, and to do research. They also used the

Internet for translation as most of them did not feel themselves confident enough to

write academic writings in English.

The study that was also conducted by Ndanwu and Anaehobi (2014) about the

Mean scores of the students on the extent of their exposure to Internet services. With

mean scores ranging from 3.63 to 3.83 the students were exposed to Internet services

to a high extent in all the conditions studied. This finding is supported by the findings

of Ajayi and Ekundayo (2009); Aboderin et al (2011) that students were to a high

extent exposed to the use of Internet services. It is necessary to expose students to

Internet facilities to enable them gain knowledge in the utilization of Internet facilities.

Such exposures enhance students understanding of the basic practical skills they

need to cope with today’s business and educational environment. Based on the

results, researchers made the recommendations for the school.

The following are the recommendations of the researchers based on the study they

have conducted; (1) Government should compel all proprietors of private secondary

schools to provide Internet services in their schools. This will equip the students with

Internet skills which are necessary for success in the information society. (2) Proprietors

should provide generators to support power supply from public power supply. (3)

Internet technology should be integrated in the curriculum and adequate provision

made for it in school time table.
