What 21st Century Skills Are Students Using?

● Students will need to communicate mathematically to discuss the Screencastify videos
they created as part of last night’s homework assignment.
● Students will need to collaborate as they participate in the Socrative Space Race that will
review the new concepts learned this week.

Essential Vocabulary
● Base
● Exponent
● Coefficient
● Evaluate
● Square of a Number
● Power

Materials
● Student Chromebooks

Introduction/Engagement
● The teacher will ask for a student volunteer to show their Screencastify video that shows
the solution to an authentic exponential expression problem.

Lesson (Teacher Input, Guided, Independent Activities, etc.)

● A student will show their Screencastify video in which they solve an authentic
exponential expression problem. A second student will show their video, if time permits.
● Students will be placed into groups of three for a Socrative Space Race.
● Students will work together to solve problems that cover the new concepts learned this
week to move their team’s rocket from one end of the screen to the other in the quickest
amount of time.
● The teacher will monitor student progress through the movement of the team’s rockets,
and will offer assistance when needed.
● The last five to ten minutes of the lesson will be devoted to summarizing the
Multiplication Law of Exponents, the Division Law of Exponents, and Evaluating
Expressions with Negative Exponents. Students will be chosen to provide summaries of
each of these concepts.

Modifications
● The vocabulary terms reviewed in this lesson will be posted around the classroom in
Spanish for our English Language Learners.
● The teacher may provide a preview of the questions to be presented in the Socrative
Space Race in classes that have students that are particularly anxious.

Enrichment
● Additional challenge problems related to the new concepts learned this week will be
provided for teams that finish the Space Race with time to spare.
