Main Examination period 2018 [SAMPLE]

MTH4101 / MTH4201: Calculus II

Duration: 2 hours

Apart from this page, you are not permitted to read the contents of this question paper
until instructed to do so by an invigilator.

You should attempt ALL questions. Marks available are shown next to the ques-
tions.

Calculators are not permitted in this examination. The unauthorised use of a calculator
constitutes an examination offence.

Complete all rough work in the answer book and cross through any work that is not to be
assessed.

Possession of unauthorised material at any time when under examination conditions is an

assessment offence and can lead to expulsion from QMUL. Check now to ensure you do not
have any notes, mobile phones, smartwatches or unauthorised electronic devices on your
person. If you do, raise your hand and give them to an invigilator immediately.

It is also an offence to have any writing of any kind on your person, including on your body.
If you are found to have hidden unauthorised material elsewhere, including toilets and
cloakrooms, it shall be treated as being found in your possession. Unauthorised material
found on your mobile phone or other electronic device will be considered the same as being
in possession of paper notes. A mobile phone that causes a disruption in the exam is also an
assessment offence.

Exam papers must not be removed from the examination room.

For Question 1 of this exam, only your final answers will be marked; partially correct answers
will be awarded partial marks. For all other questions, you should show your working and
carefully justify every step, except where you are simply asked to “State” or “Write down” a
result.

Question 1. [40 marks]

(a) Calculate a1 , a2 , and a3 for the sequence

n + (−1)n
an =
2n
and state whether the sequence converges. [5]

(b) Find the sum of the series

∞

n =1

indicating which property of the terms is used in your calculation. [5]

(c) Evaluate
e x sin y

Question 2. [20 marks]

(a) (i) By calculating derivatives of the function

1
f (x) = ,
1 + 2x

obtain its Maclaurin series, explicitly including terms up to x3 . State the range of x
for which your series converges to f ( x ). [8]
(ii) Show how your result in (i) can be used to obtain the Maclaurin series for
ln(1 + 2x ) and give a formula for the nth term of this series. [4]

(b) Use the Integral Test to determine for which values of p the series

1
∑ n ( ln n) p
n =3

converges, and for which it diverges. [8]

Question 3. [20 marks]

Consider the function
g( x, y) = ey sin x.

(a) Use the chain rule to find the derivative of g( x, y) with respect to t along the path x = t,
y = cos t. [9]

(b) Calculate the gradient vector of g( x, y) at the point (0, 1). Use your result to calculate
the directional
√ derivative
√ of this function at (0, 1) in the direction of the unit vector
v = (1/ 2)i + (1/ 2)j. [6]

(c) State the definition, in terms of a limit, for the derivative of a general function f at
P0 ( x0 , y0 ) in the direction of the unit vector u = u1 i + u2 j. [2]

(d) Using the definition from part (c), evaluate

√ the derivative
√ of g( x, y) = ey sin x at (0, 1) in
the direction of the unit vector w = (1/ 2)i − (1/ 2)j. [3]

Question 4. [20 marks]

(a) The equations x = r cos θ, y = r sin θ specify a transformation between Cartesian

coordinates ( x, y) and polar coordinates (r, θ ) with r ≥ 0 and θ ∈ [0, 2π ).

(i) Show that

∂( x, y)
= r.
∂(r, θ ) [5]
(ii) Write down the inverse transformation and using the result from (i), or otherwise,
calculate ∂(r, θ )/∂( x, y). [4]

(b) Consider the function

1
f ( x, y) = .
(4 − x 2 − y2 )
(i) By transforming to polar coordinates, integrate f ( x, y) over the disc x2 + y2 ≤ 1. [8]
(ii) Does the integral of f ( x, y) over the disc x2 + y2 ≤ 4 exist? Give reasons for your
answer. [3]
