4 Release Overview

4.1 New Features

This release contains the following enhancements:

Propagation of Refining Properties

All Refinery properties can now be propagated across all unit operation and subflowsheets.

PPR78 Enhancement - Regression of PPR Binary Coefficients

The model automatically generate BIPs over a range of temperatures and regresses the values
to fit the parameters of the generic USD BIP temperature dependent equation. The results of
the data generation and the coefficient fits is separate from the actual specifications of BIP. For
each component pair’s estimation, the user is able to modify the temperature range for the
generation of data and also to set individual parameters to zero thereby modifying the
regression.

Oil Blend Breakup

The Cut Option Selection/User Ranges Can now be modified in the Oil Manager. This option
allows the Starting Cut Point to be lower than the IBP of the Blend and the Ending Cut Point to
be higher than the EP of the Blend. If there is no material in the Blend within a particular range,
then the Hypo component would have zero flow, but would still be characterized.

Vapor Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity

The viscosity and thermal conductivity for the water and hydrogen free portion of the vapor
phase is now calculated using the USD methods at the system temperature and "zero"
pressure.

Adjust-Recycle Manager Enhancement

Provides the capability to add SSOVs to ARM Groups. When in an ARM Group, the capability of
ignoring the execution is provided.

USE-IT/Browser - Give general access to USD Utilities (BP Curves Utility performance
table)
We Enhanced the USE-IT/Browser capabilities to be able to access UniSim Design Utilities
generally (particularly the Boiling Point Curves performance datatable). Data can now be
retrieved using USE-IT/Browser or a custom OLE Automation solution spreadsheet.

Calculation Order Utility Enhancement

Enabled an Adjust-Recycle Manager Group to be a Trigger object in the Calculation Order
Utility.

UniSim Design Release R451 Software Change Notice 10

Direct link between UniSim Design with Haverly H/CAMS
The Crude Manager has been enhanced to be able to directly import crude assays from Haverly
H/CAMS.

Refinery Property Plots Utility

The stream property plot allows you to plot stream component properties. The main intention it
to be able to see a plot of property slate vectors.

LP Vector Generation Utility

New feature for generating vectors for LP model tuning (representing a unit operation or a
process area), by tracking specified simulated or plant historical process variables. It includes
visualization features for determining how well the LP model fits the data. The LP vectors can
be copied/pasted or communicated via OLE to Excel.

Extend Flowsheet lock/hide to block OLE/COM access

The Lock page on Column and Template views has been updated to include an "Allow access
via OLE" checkbox. Old cases will recall with this checkbox defaulting to checked (allowing
OLE access, preserving old functionality). New cases or newly created columns and templates
will default to unchecked - so by default, OLE access will not be allowed when locking and
hiding a flowsheet.

GCEOS Thermodynamics Enhancement

USD GCEOS interface now allows specification Kappa1 = 0 for Tr > 0.7.

Compressor Curve Enhancement

The user input Pressure Ratio Curve data will be converted into Head Curve data by a rigorous
model using inlet fluid properties or by a formula from GPSA handbook if Pressure Ratio Option
is selected. The head curves are used to solve the compressor.

Hydrate Utility Enhancement

This utility is enhanced with backup calculations to eliminate most discontinuity.

Data Management Spreadsheet (DMS)

Excel-based tool used for process data management, auditing and reporting purposes. It can
retrieve the data from process simulation case(s) and report it by equipment type, it can update
a selected case, it can generate stream, exception and instrument reports, and it can generate
rotating equipment curves. DMS is supported for 32x bit and 64x bit excel applications.

*Note. As part of the sale of the HYSYS IP by AspenTech to Honeywell, Honeywell only
received source code updates up to and including HYSYS 2006 CP1. However UniSim Design
will also attempt to open HYSYS files listed in the table above. This file compatibility is intended
as a migration method not an interoperability method and is supplied as is; it is the responsibility
of the user to check any cases opened in this way.

UniSim Design can coexist on the same PC as Aspen HYSYS without interference.
By default the file open dialogs in UniSim Design will show both UniSim Design (.usc) and
HYSYS (.hsc) cases. Opening a .hsc case in UniSim Design will automatically convert the case
– saving that same case will create a .usc file.

To save back to HYSYS format save the case with the .hsc extension, either by selecting
HYSYS from the ‘Save As Type’ or ‘File Filter’ list, or by appending the .hsc extension to the file
name.

Note that other custom file types used by UniSim Design and HYSYS may not be compatible.
For example, UniSim Design may be able to open .col files from HYSYS, but the opposite is not
true – HYSYS cannot open files created by UniSim Design other than .hsc files.

UniSim Design versions of extension unit operations or other extension types must be
registered with UniSim using UniSim Design’s regextn.exe.

For additional Software/Hardware/Firmware Compatibility, please refer to the UniSim Design

Suite Installation Guide.

10 Issues

Based on information and data available to us to date, this section describes some currently
identified issues related to this release.

10.1 Known Limitations in this Release

10.1.1 Loading Very Large XML Cases

Depending on your system configurations and hardware, UniSim Design may not be able to
read very large XML cases depending on available memory. Note that there is no specific limit.

10.1.2 Simulation Balance Tool in Dynamics

The Simulation Balance Tool is an investigative tool which allows the user to quantify the
accuracy of the simulation. There can be many reasons for a certain degree of closure in
balances, one of which is the fact that UniSim Design is a numerical solver with inherent
accuracy limits. Some increases in accuracy can be obtained by the end user, particularly
gross inaccuracy caused by unit operations such as the Stream Cutter and undesirable
component mapping (this is just one example of how a user can configure their model with
reduced accuracy). At times there may be a cause of inaccuracy within the base simulation
software. Honeywell is committed to improving the accuracy of UniSim Design, particularly
dynamics, and the SBT is one tool that Honeywell will be using to analyze and improve
accuracy.

10.1.3 OLI Corrosion Analyzer

OLI Corrosion Analyzer and OLI Engine use different database files. Consequently, there may
be discrepancies in the results between OLI Corrosion Analyzer and UniSim Design OLI
Electrolyte flow sheet. A newer version of OLI Corrosion Analyzer has resolved this issue by
using the same database files as OLI Engine. However, as of UniSim Design R451 Release
time, the newer version is not yet available.

UniSim Design Release R451 Software Change Notice 16

10.1.4 Enforce Mass and Energy Balances
This is a new option for integration accuracy but it also includes a new formulation for the
Pressure-Flow equation of a holdup used to solve for pressure. This is commonly called the
Pressure Node equation. This equation can at times suffer from Pressure Flow Solver non-
convergence particularly when transition through a phase boundary from liquid to two phase or
vice-versa. Please report any such problems to UniSim Support for their advice.

10.1.5 Update to Flowsheet menu

The "Reaction Package" and "Fluid Package/Dynamics Model" pull down menu option has been
removed from the Flowsheet menu.

These are old legacy options that are not used and do not work properly.

10.1.6 EO Beggs and Brill Correlation

UniSim Design EO Pipe’s Beggs and Brill pressure drop correlation model may cause a
convergence issue during low flow scenarios and during phase change from vapour to two
phase.
