ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the effects of mathematics proficiency in English

performance of Grade-7 students of Maloco National High School, Academic Year 2017-

2018. The researcher used two different sets of questionnaire, one for students and one

for teacher. The researcher also used English and mathematics test. The researcher

expected to answer the research question to help the researcher to get their main goal. To

find out if there is any link between English and mathematics proficiency and the

academic performance.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Maloco National High School is a secondary public high school located at Maloco,

Ibajay, Aklan in the District of Ibajay West, Division of Aklan in Region VI-Western

Visayas, Philippines. The school is composed of 35 faculty and staff headed by the

school Principal II, Mr. Victor C. Pagayunan. There are approximately 700 students

including the Senior high school.

The Grade 7 students of Maloco National High School were the participants chosen by

the researcher. The Grade 7 have five section and that is STE (Science Technology

Engendering), the Star section and the Heterogeneous section. The STE section is have

an average grade of 88 or more in science and mathematics. This section takes different

curriculum compared to regular section. This curriculum focuses on science and

mathematics instruction. The star section is composed of students whose general average

of 88 or higher, while the other heterogeneous have average of 87 or below.

This study is about the Grade 7 effects of Mathematics proficiency in English

performance. There are different kinds of students when it comes in learning

Mathematics and English. There are some students who are good in Math, but not in

English or student who are good in English, but not in Math. Also, there are some that are

both in good in English and Math and some are not good in English and Math.

STATEMENT OF THE PROLEM

This study is about the effects of Mathematics proficiency in English performance of

Grade 7 students. The researcher conducted this study because the researcher observes

that there are some students are good in Math by solving problem or easy to understand

but have difficulties in reading and writing in English. Also some are good in speaking,

reading and writing in English but not good in solving problem.

This study attempted to evaluate the effects of Mathematics proficiency in English

performance of Grade 7 students of Maloco National High School Academic Year 2017-

2018 as preserve by the teacher and students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study must be conducted to find out the effects of mathematics proficiency in

English performance of students. The researcher observed that there are some students

are good in English, but not in mathematics. And there are also good in mathematics, but

not in English. And both good in mathematics and English or both not in mathematics

and English.

The researcher wants to study the effects of mathematics proficiency in English

performance of grade 7 students of Maloco National High School, School Year 2017-

2018

The result of this study is beneficial to students, teachers, parents, school administrator,

researcher, and others interested individuals because this can give empirical data about

the effects of mathematics proficiency in English performance. This study will also

benefit the students who are still at school because it will give them information about the

effect of mathematics proficiency in English performance. And also to inform them if

there have difficulties in mathematics or English they can improve it. This study will also

benefit the teacher on the steps to take for they could be informed how importance of the

learning of students in math and English. This enables them to guide and identify the

reason why there are some student have difficulties in mathematics and English

especially in Maloco National High School. This study will also benefit the parents

enable for them to give information about their children performance in English and

mathematics subject. If their children have difficulty they can teach them to improve it.

This study will also benefit the teacher on the steps to take for they could be inform to the

importance of the learning of students in mathematics and English. This study will also

benefit the school administrators. It will provide them information on the importance of

knowing why there are some students that good in English, but not good in mathematics

and good in mathematics, but not in English. And both good in English and mathematics

or not good in mathematics and English.
