PRYSE INQUIRY PROJECT 1

QUESTIONS

● What non-musical skills will be necessary to teach? How will those skills differ depending on

what age is being taught (general music vs middle school vs high school)?

● What materials will be needed to set up a classroom? How will these materials differ across

different age groups?

● What is your overall goal as a future music teacher?

● What musical skills will be necessary to teach?

Proposal

Rationale: Because my eventual goal is to teach at the university level, I will have to interact
with people who are mostly serious about the field of music. To me, I can’t be strictly a
performer, or strictly a composer, or any of that. To me, I am a musician first, and my goal is to
accrue as much musical knowledge as is possible. That way, my self-directed students can use
me as a resource to challenge their own knowledge about what music is, and what it can be,
and how they should guide themselves on their musical journey. As with all human history, we
pass down the skills we gain to the next generation, as we slowly understand what it is we are
capable of as humans. The community I plan to engage with will be consummate professionals,
meaning I will always have to be on top of my game. As is necessary in any competitive field, I
will be competing against other top notch musicians to get a job teaching the most serious
students. However, if I am to win one of those coveted jobs, I will be fortunate enough to teach
the most motivated, and learn alongside some of the most dedicated faculty, so that I too can
hone my craft of teaching and mentoring. I want to encourage my students to get experimental
with music. I don’t believe music is static, and I enjoy celebrating the thankless pioneers who
take off the nostalgia goggles and create something truly new, and I hope to instill this novelty
into everyone I work with in the musical world.

Research Question: If new music is worth pursuing, how do I facilitate and encourage the
expansion of music into the unknown?
