CONTEXT Please add brief context statements about the school and class:
School sector; size and composition of campus (R-12, Area, Primary); particular
features or unique characteristics; index of disadvantage.
School

Encounter Lutheran College is a P-12 school on a single campus at Victor Harbor, 85km from
Adelaide.

Class (including children with special needs)

Art is optional from Years 9-12 so there tends to be little disengagement. Behaviour management
doesn’t tend to be too much of an issue and special needs are also undemanding because of the
nature of Art and its flexibility.

University Liaison

Ailish completed a very satisfactory teaching block at Encounter Lutheran College. Both observed
lessons were with the year 8 Visual Arts class and they were double practical lessons. The
lessons plans were detailed with behavior management strategies included. It was obvious that
Ailish was very aware of the students who required extra support due to their learning abilities.
Alternative tasks for these students were included. The lesson plans also indicated that Ailish has
a strong understanding of the Australian Curriculum and the intended lesson outcomes reflected
this and she clearly stated the focus for the lessons.

The lessons began effectively and Ailish immediately engaged the students by asking questions to
gauge their understanding of the concepts taught during the previous lesson. Students were
encouraged to expand their responses and all were encouraged to answer questions. Ailish gave
clear instructions and her demonstrations to further clarify the practical task to be undertaken were
very effective, ensuring that all the students understood the activity. During the lessons she moved
around the room giving positive and constructive feedback and support to all the students.
Acceptable behavior expectations were also clearly explained.

Ailish conducted the lessons with a very calm and friendly manner and the students responded
well. It was obvious that they enjoyed the lessons and respected Ailish. Her relaxed but
professional approach created an environment that encouraged a positive working space. Most
students were generally focused and engaged during the lessons and Ailish aimed to be aware of
the all student behavior while she was assisting individual students. However this is an area that
Ailish will need to continue to develop. Ensuring all students are working and not just chatting is
important. She effectively made sure that all students were attentive and quiet when she was
giving instructions, explaining the content of the lessons and demonstrating activities.

Ailish demonstrated that she has the potential to become a very competent teacher. I wish her all
the very best.

RE: Ailish Ling

Professional Knowledge

Ailish is very well read and understands and implements pedagogy with ease. Her demonstration and
explanation to students for each task were of a high level and adequately displayed her wide
knowledge of the specific skills and materials particular to Art.
Professional Practice

Ailish was very well liked and respected by the students. Her firm but friendly manner meant she had
little in the way of behaviour management issues to deal with. Ailish stated the expectations for each
lesson clearly, posted a written timeline, and gave straightforward demonstrations so that students
were completely clear on what they were to do. She differentiated tasks quietly and confidently when
necessary and encouraged the slower students and challenged the more able students to stretch
themselves. Ailish quickly learnt and used the students’ names. They were in no doubt that she cared
for each one of them and their futures.

Professional Engagement

As well as teaching most of my classes, Ailish observed the Year 7 Art lessons. She asked both me,
and the Year 7 teacher lots of insightful and considered questions. I was pleased to see that she
acted on our answers to questions and comments on her work. Nothing had to be said twice.
Ailish sat in on phone calls with parents when I was giving both good and bad news.
She engaged with all the Art teachers on the coast and members of both South Coast Rotary Clubs
as we hung the annual SALA Schools Art Show at a neighbouring school. She discussed the other
students’ projects with their teachers and also the details involved with setting up student exhibitions.
