FACTORS AFFECTING THE MIGRATION OF AETAS AT DOLORES, DUMALAG, CAPIZ

One of the popular Indigenous People groups in the Philippines is the Negritos. Negritos
are the aborigines of the Philippines and considered to be the first migrants to the Philippines
during the last glacial period and is described as the smallest among people on earth. They are
usually five feet tall, with black skin, dark kinky hair, round black eyes, and flat nose. Moreover,
they are traditional people with culture belonging to the old stone age. Past researchers also
affirmed that one way for a society to attain development and progress is on the predominance of
technology in agriculture, food production, and industries. However, not all communities and
groups can have an access to the different technologies created by man. And one of this groups is
the Aetas. But because of their need to survive to their everyday living, some of them migrated
in the mid-1980’s in search for better opportunities and ways of living, and beacause of their
constant interactions with other ethnic groups, their ways of living especially on their economic
survival is now starting to change. That is why the researchers conducted this research study to
determine the factors affectig their migration in barangay dolores. The International Labor
Organizationsaid that Indigenous people are descendants of the aboriginal population living in a
given country at the time of settlement or conquest by some ancestors of the non-indigenous
groups in whose hands political and economic power at present lies. In general, those
descendants tend to live more in conformity with the social, economic and cultural institutions
which existed before colonizationor conquest than with the culture of the nation to which they
belong; they do not fully share in national economy and culture owing to barriers of language,
customs, creeds, prejudice and often to an out-of date and unjust system of work-employer
relationships and other social and political factors.

A total of 36 Aetas were chosen to become the participants of the researchers by using
the clustered sampling. Participants were guided by interpreting the statements i “Bisaya”
especially in “Kinaray-a”, their own language. And as for the results, the survey data shows that
mostly of themhave a monthly family income of 10,000 below and only few of them have 10,001
up to 15,000 monthly family income. Also it shows there that 100% of Aetas’ father’s
educational attainment is elementary level as well as the Aetas’ mother’s. So all in all, the factors
that affect the migration of Aetas at Barangay Dolores,Dumalag,Capiz are source of Income-
related Factor, Environment-related Factor, and Socio-economic Factor.
