What this chapter contains

This chapter shows an overview of the ASFC unit and describes the connectors,
settings and LEDs. In addition there is a circuit diagram of frame R8i inverter power
supply circuit and descriptions of the power switch-on and power off sequences.

ASFC unit overview

Frame size R8i inverter modules are connected to the drive DC bus
F 1 through a switch fuse (type OESL by ABB). The installation is
equipped with a Switch Fuse Controller Unit (ASFC) which controls
X 7 X 8 the inverter power switch-on and power switch-off. The unit also

Charging circuit monitoring

For each inverter module in the system (one to three) there is a charging current
monitoring on the ASFC unit. Switch S1 enables the monitoring for inverter 1, S2 for
inverter 2 and S3 for inverter 3. All enabled monitoring circuits must detect current
less than 0.7 A (= capacitor bank nearly full) to allow the release of the switch fuse
locking solenoid and to allow the inverter power switch-on.
Switch Position Description

S1 DIS Inverter 1 charging current monitoring is disabled and Inverter 1 start is

disabled (no INV1 EN signal is allowed)

EN Inverter 1 charging current monitoring is enabled and Inverter 1 start is

enabled (INV1 EN signal sent after charging is completed)

S2 DIS Inverter 2 charging current monitoring is disabled and Inverter 2 start is

disabled (no INV2 EN signal allowed)

EN Inverter 2 charging current monitoring is enabled and Inverter 2 start is

enabled (INV2 EN signal sent after charging is completed)

S3 DIS Inverter 3 charging current monitoring is disabled and Inverter 3 start is

disabled (no INV3 EN signal allowed)

EN Inverter 3 charging current monitoring is enabled and Inverter 3 start is

enabled (INV3 EN signal sent after charging is completed)

Note: The ASFC unit does not control the main contacts of the switch fuse closed
unless at least one of switches S1 to S3 is in enabled position.

Miscellaneous

Details of the locking solenoid control

The switch fuse locking is released by the locking solenoid when:
• Switch fuse handle in 1 (on) position. (ASFC monitors an auxiliary contact.)
• DC voltage of all inverter modules monitored by the ASFC unit exceed 80% of the
nominal value. (ASFC receives UDC signals from inverters.)
• At least one of the inverter module enabled/disabled switches (S1…S3) is in
enabled position.
When all conditions are met simultaneously, a relay included in the ASFC connects
the operating voltage to the solenoid for 3.5 seconds.

Switch fuse operation when the drive DC bus is not live

If the handle of the switch fuse is turned to 1 (on) position when the DC busbar of the
inverter system is unpowered, the spring-operated main contacts remain open.
Later, when the drive supply unit is switched ON, the power-on sequence follows the
routine described in section Inverter power switch-on sequence on page 10.

Installation

What this chapter contains

This chapter instructs how to install the ASFC unit into a user-defined cabinet.

Planning the installation of the ASFC unit

Placing
Install the ASFC unit in a heated indoor environment. Ensure the temperature meets
the requirement given in chapter Technical data. Also ensure that the ambient
conditions meet the requirements of ACS800-104 inverter modules. See ACS800-
104 Inverter Module Hardware Manual (3AFE64809032 [English].
Do not install the ASFC unit far from the inverters. The fibre optic cable(s) between
the unit and inverter(s) may not exceed four metres in length.

No condensation is allowed. There are connectors that are connected to drive main
circuit potential.

Cable selection
See ACS800-104 Inverter Module Hardware Manual (3AFE64809032 [English]).

Always follow the specification given by ABB. The cables are connected to drive
main circuit potential.

Protecting against contact

Protect the ASFC unit against accidental contact. There are connectors that are
connected to drive main circuit potential.
