Pedestal Design

Required data:
Axial Load from column ,Pu = 2000 kN
Breadth of pedestal = 300 mm
Depth of pedestal = 600 mm
Fck = 20 Mpa
Fy = 415 Mpa

Logitudinal Reinforcements

Pu = 0.4 fck Ag + (0.67 fy - fck ) Asc

Asc = 2073.69 Sqmm

Provide 20 mm dia bars

No of bars = Asc/asc
= 6.60

Hence Provide 8 nos of 20 mm dia bars

Lateral ties 5

Tie Diameter ≥ (1/4) * dia of logitudinal bars

≥ 5 mm
≥ 6 mm
Provide 8 mm dia bars
Tie Spacing ≤ 300 mm 320
≤ 16 times the dia of logitudinal reinforcement
320 mm
≤ 48 times the dia of lateral reinforcement
384 mm
Provide 300 mm Spacing

Provide 8 mm diameter ties at 300 mm centres

Footing Design

Data
Axial Load from column ,Pu = 1500 kN
Breadth of pedestal = 300 mm
Depth of pedestal = 500 mm
Fck = 20 Mpa
Fy = 415 Mpa
Safe Bearing capacity of soil, p = 185 kN / sq m

Size of footing
Load of column = 1500 kN
Self weight of footing(10%) = 150 kN
Total Factored Load = 1650 kN

Footing Area = (Total Factored Load)/(1.5*SBC)

6 sqm

Proportion the footing area in the same proportion as the sides of column

Hence 3 x * 5 x = 6 sqm
x = 0.63

Short side of footing = 1.89 m = 2m

Long side of footing = 3.15 m = 3m

Adopt rectangular footing of size 2m By 3m

Factored Soil Pressure at base is computed as

pu = Load on column / Area of footing

250 kN / sq m < (1.5*185)
278 kN / sq m
Hence the Footing area is adequate since the soil pressure developed
at the base is less than the factored bearing capacity of soil

Factore Bending Moment

Cantilever projection from the short face of the column = 1.25 m

Cantilever projection from the short face of the column = 0.85 m
Bending Moment at short side face of column is (0.5p u.L2) = 195.31 kNm
Bending Moment at short side face of column is (0.5p u.L ) 2
= 90.31 kNm

Depth of footing
a) By considering moment
Mu = 0.138 fck b d2
d = 266 mm

b) From shear considerations we have the critical section for one way shear is
located at a distance 'd' from the face of the column.

Shear force per metre width (Longer direction) is :

Vul = Pu * (cantilever projection - d)

Assuming shear strength Ꚍc = 0.36 N/mm 2 for M20 Grade concrete with nominal
percentage of reinforcement ,pt=0.25

Ꚍc = Vul / bd
360 d = (312500 - 250 d)
d = 512.30 mm

Hence Adopt effective depth ,d = 550 mm

and overall depth ,D = 600 mm

Reinforcement In footing

Longer direction

Mu = (0.87 fy Ast d)(1-((Ast fy)/(bd fck)))

a = 7.49
b = 198577.5
c = 195312500
Ast = 25483 sqmm
Ast = 1023 sqmm
Adopt 16 mm Dia bars
Spacing = 196.43 mm
Adopt 16 mmdiameter bar at 180 mm centres

Longer direction

Mu = (0.87 fy Ast d)(1-((Ast fy)/(bd fck)))

a = 7.49
b = 198577.5
c = 90312500
Ast = 26043 sqmm
Ast = 463 sqmm
Min Ast = 12% bD
= 720 sqmm
Hence provide Ast = 720 sqmm
Adopt 12 mm Dia bars
Spacing = 157.00 mm
Adopt 12 mmdiameter bar at 150 mm centres

Check for shear stress

The critical section for one way shear is located at a distance 'd'
from the face of the column

Ultimate shear
in longer direction = 175000 N

(100 Ast ) / (bd) = 0.19

From Graph, Ꚍc = 0.33 N sqmm

Nominal Shear force = Vu/ b*d

= 0.32 N sqmm

Shear stress is within the safe permissible limits
