After a thorough investigation on the death of Cadet Fourth Class Darwin Dormitorio, the Philippine

Military Academy (PMA) on Tuesday bared the identities of the individuals involved in the hazing
incident.

The PMA identified Cadet Third Class Shalimar Imperial and Cadet Third Class Felix Lumbag as those with
"direct participation" in Dormitorio's hazing, while Cadet First Class Axl Rey Sanupao allegedly
"encouraged maltreatment" against the 20-year-old cadet.

The PMA said these three individuals would be dismissed from the military school. Squad leader and
Cadet Second Class Nickoel Termil would be similarly dismissed due to "command responsibility."

Meanwhile, the PMA added that platoon leader Cadet First Class Irvin Sayud and commanding officer
Cadet First Class Elbert Lucas would be suspended.

The military school added that a cadet, identified as Cadet First Class Christian Correa, would also face a
penalty for a "class 1 offense."

The two PMA military officers who were relieved on Monday were also identified: Major Rex Bolo (senior
tactical officer) and Captain Jeffrey Batistiana (tactical officer).

Hospital officers including Colonel Cesar Candelaria (commanding officer) and Captain Flor Apostol
(attending physician) would also face administrative case, the PMA said.

Dormitorio was found unconscious in his room and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital last
September 18. An autopsy performed on the PMA cadet showed bruises on different parts of his body
that were likely the result of multiple beatings.
Earlier in the day, Lieutenant General Ronnie Evangelista resigned as PMA superintendent. Brigadier
General Bartolome Bacarro, the commandant of cadets, also resigned.

prosecution procedures had commenced. — DVM, GMA News

The Department of National Defense (DND) on Tuesday commended the decision of Lieutenant General
Ronnie Evangelista and Brigadier General Bartolome Bacarro to resign from their respective posts in the
Philippine Military Academy (PMA) following the death of Cadet Fourth Class Darwin Dormitorio.

“By choosing this course of action, Lieutenant General Evangelista and Brigadier General Bacarro have
shown the hallmark of true leadership as espoused by the military profession and the principle of
command responsibility,” DND spokesman Director Arsenio Andolong said in a statement.

“We wish both gentlemen the best in their future endeavours,” Andolong added.

Evangelista was the superintendent of the military school while Bacorro was the commandant of cadets.

Outgoing Armed Forces chief General Benjamin Madrigal already accepted the resignation of Evangelista
and Bacorro.

It was on September 18 when the 20-year-old PMA cadet was found unconscious in his room and was
declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
An autopsy conducted on Dormitorio showed bruises on different parts of his body that are probably the
result of him being punched and kicked several times.

The military school already identified the individuals who were involved in the maltreatment against
Dormitorio.

warriors —Dela Rosa

The outlawed practice of hazing is more likely to be carried out in military schools where students are
being trained to become "warriors", Senator Ronald Dela Rosa said on Tuesday.

Dela Rosa made the remark in the wake of the death of Philippine Military Academy plebe Darwin
Dormitorio due to alleged hazing.

“Just imagine, kung itong mga civilian universities mayroong hazing, much more ang military academy,"
said Dela Rosa, a member of PMA Class of 1986.

"Imagine-in ninyo. Tine-train ang mga tao diyan para maging warriors,” he added.

Dela Rosa when he was still the chief of the Philippine National Police in 2018 said in a news conference
that hazing was one of the factors why he became tough and disciplined as an officer.

He was at that time reacting to a video in which Philippine National Police Academy cadets were seen
paddling the palms of other cadets.
Dela Rosa said on Tuesday that he was once made to drink half a bottle of fish sauce of patis when he
was still a PMA cadet.

He said it was the most difficult thing he went through as a PMA cadet. The fish sauce, he said, made
him dizzy for a week.

“Painumin ka ng kalahating bote ng patis, one week kang hilo,” Dela Rosa said.

“Bugbugin mo na lang ako kesa painumin mo ako ng patis kasi ang bugbog pagkatapos wala na, ang patis
one week na hilo ka pa rin,” he added.

The senator refused to share the other hardships he went through as he defended PMA.

“Ayoko na i-share sa inyo. Sabihin na naman ninyo ganyan kademonyo ang PMA pero kayo you can attack
us, kaming mga PMA graduates, you can condemn us, but please don’t condemn our alma mater. We
love PMA so much,” Dela Rosa said.

Asked if hazing was needed to instill discipline and train the PMA cadets, Dela Rosa said, "No. Maraming
paraan."

"Pa-squat thrust mo ‘yan buong araw, tignan natin kung hindi magtino. Push up ka buong gabi. Physical
activties pa rin pero no body contact,” Dela Rosa said.
