TEACHING AIDS

1.1 Description of who the aids are for.

A teaching aid is an object (such as a book, picture, or map) or device (such as a

dvd or computer) used by a teacher to enhance or enliven classroom instruction.

Nowadays it is very important include the technology into the classroom. The
process of teaching- learning depends upon the different type of equipment
available in the classroom.

There are many aids available these days. And they can be classified as follows:

1) Visual aids.
These aids are which students use sense of vision. As actual objects,
models, pictures, charts, maps flash cards, flannel board, bulletin board,
chalkboard, slides, projector, etc.
2) Audio aids.
These aids involve the sense of hearing, for example, tape recorder, radio,
music, etc.
3) Audio-Visual aids.
The aids which involve the sense of vision as well as hearing are called
audio visual aids. For example: television, film projector film strips etc.

Teaching aids play a very important role in Teaching-Learning process, for

example, motivation due to the different teaching aid motivate the students so
that they can learn better and maintain the interest in the class, also the teaching
aids can be useful to clarify, because trough these the teacher clarify the subject or
the topic easily.

The use of teaching aids can facilitate the increase of vocabulary of the students
more effectively, and provides in the classroom an environment more active during
the class.
During the class that was observed the principal teaching aid that were used was
the book (student-book) including the audios (listening exercises) in the unit. Also
the book was digitally projected during the class due to some students did not have
the student book, most of them already had it, so that allows that everybody were
working in the exercises on the book.

In the class were 22 students most of them are between 16 and 25 years old, but
also there were three adults between the age of 40 and 50. One aspect that was
very obvious during the time in which the class was observed was that each table
was separated by ages, the level of the class was B1-1, and the grammar topic
were questions ending with prepositions and also phrasal verbs.

About their learning needs, the variety of resources and strategies of B1 level has
been traditionally associated with the textbook, but the need for learning of this
group in addition to increasing their vocabulary, improving their oral production and
having more knowledge about the grammar rules of the language, due to the age
of the students in the group is that the classes have to be active so that they can
keep their attention in class, something that was observed is that at the tables
where teenagers were working during the space that were given to share their
answers, they talked about other issues and not about the class.

Language can have many characteristics but the following are the most important
ones: language is productive, creative, systematic, vocalic, social, non-instinctive
and conventional.

Every individual has the tendency to forget, so proper use of teaching aids helps to
retain more concepts permanently; also students can learn better when they are
motivated properly through different teaching aids. Teaching aids helps the teacher
to get sometime and make learning permanent and provide direct experience to
the students, creating an environment of interest for the students.
About this, in the class it was marked that the class was guided by the book, all the
exercises were done and then the students shared the answers.

1.2 Evaluation of the teaching aids

As was mentioned, during the period that was observed the class, the group was
doing the different exercises in the student book, the principal teaching aid, was
the book, the projector, computer and also the speakers for the listening exercises
in the book.

The class was guided correctly, each exercise that was answered the answers
were socialized and were reviewed by the teacher, in the same way that the book
was projected was a great visual aid for all students even for those who had their
book, the exercises of auditory comprehension that were in the book, they did not
have a high degree of complexity so they were quickly resolved by the students,
however, these activities effectively helped to change the tone of the class that at
one time became monotonous

An important aspect was that the class was on its way, and you could appreciate a
total silence, while the students did an exercise, here it is also important to mention
that it was the first class of the course, the teacher could notice the silence that
was somewhat uncomfortable , so she decided to play some songs in the speakers
and that immediately made to feel the change in the classroom environment.

At one point in the class, the students had doubts about what a phrasal verb was,
so the teacher used the board to explain to the students what the phrasal verbs
were and give some examples of their use and what they are

In this sense, it is important to mention that the class was only observed for one
hour and this time is not enough to give you an accurate vision on how each
teacher carries out the teaching process, however, it gives you an overview about
the class.
The exclusive use of the student's book can turn the class into something boring
for some of the students, especially by age, in this case many of the students were
teenagers and attending to their nature, knowing the stage they are in is important
a diversification of teaching material and resources to use in the class.

Another aspect that can improve the rhythm of the class and that a learning
process really takes place on the part of the students, would be to diversify the
work teams, so that the different ages that are within the group are mixed and a
different environment inside the classroom

Finally, during the time observed, it was notable that many of the students were
looking for a visual resource to help them understand better, either in the book or
on the board, so something that could improve the class would be to use more
visual aids during different moments of the class, even following the book
throughout the class
