8. PROCEDURE FOR INSTALALTION

Installation of Magnesium Anodes:
8.1 Anode will be laid near to the location at the SPL terminal end.
8.2 Magnesium Anode will be installed vertically as multiple anodes in a battery of Six
Anodes.
8.3 The anodes will be laid parallel to pipeline at maximum of 3 meters from pipeline with
spacing of 5 meter between the anodes.
8.4 Anodes will be installed in a bore hole, with a top of the anode, level with the bottom of
the pipeline.
8.5 Junction box will be installed at around mid of the anodes battery.
8.6 The cable of each anode will be brought to the anode junction box.
8.7 The individual anode cable connection will be made through a shunt and connected to
the bus bar installed in the junction box.
8.8 One end of Drain point cable of size 16mm2, will be connected to the pipeline using
Cadweld System. Other end of the cable will be terminated with the bus bar in the anode
junction box.
8.9 Annexure-B showing configuration of the multiple anodes will be followed.

8.10 JUNCTION BOX

8.10.1 Install Junction Box (JB) with the support pipe grouted in concrete base of
size 1.5ft x 1.5ft x 1ft. JB shall have the following connection.
8.10.2 Junction Box will have six shunts and copper bus bar.

8.10.3 Cable from each anode will be connected to the copper bus bar through each
shunt in junction box.
8.10.4 The electrical connection of the pipeline at drain point is made with the copper
bus bar through resistor in the junction box during 16mm2 cable. The
connection of the cable with pipeline is made using thermoweld (Cadweld).

8.11 POTENTIAL MONITORING POST

8.11.1 Refer drawing no: ELE-TYP-105 of tender document.
8.11.2 Installation of monitoring post will be carried out at locations indicating in
ANNEXURE-C. The post will have the following connection.
a. Potential measuring connection from Pipe to the potential terminal in the
post, using 10mm2 cable. Connection of Pipe with 10mm2 monitoring cable
will be made using cad welding at the indicate location.
b. 4 mm2 Cable connection from permanent reference electrode.

8.12 Application of Epoxy on the Cadweld Connection:

Application of Epoxy on the Cadweld Connection:
8.12.1 Remove the coating patch size around by 4’’x 4’’ at required point on Top
surface of the 10’’ dia laid pipeline and clean the surface using wire brush.
8.12.2 After mixing part A and part B of the Epoxy 821 or equivalent in equal volume
on a clean smooth sheet of steel, tin plate or hard board using knife, scraper
blade or trowel.
8.12.3 Apply the mixer on the Cadweld, pipe surface and the gap between cable and
pipe surface adjacent to Cadweld.
8.12.4 The rate of application shell be around 0.05 m² per litre of mixer
8.12.5 Leave the applied surface open (note to backfill the trench) for drying time
mentioned below
a. For 25°C (77°F) temperature – 24 hrs
b. For 40°C (104°F) temperature – 4 hrs

8.12.6 Backfill the trunch after drying time

8.13 ELECTRICAL ISOLATION

8.13.1 The Pipeline shall be electrically isolated by providing the following
8.13.1.1 Installation of insulating joints at start and End of the pipeline.
8.13.1.2 Insulating pad at the supports on above ground pipeline section.

8.14 CABLING
1
8.14.1 Buried cable will be laid at a nominal depth of 1 2 to 2 ft.

8.14.2 Cabling shall by run generally through PVC conduit.

8.14.3 Cables run shall be in single continuous length

9. PROCEDURE FOR START UP AND COMMISSION.

9.1 Check all the Electric connections at JB for proper tightness.
9.2 The measurement is taken by use of a calibrated multimeter. Positive terminal of
the meter is connected to the permanent reference electrodes terminal and
negative terminal of the Pipeline connection in the monitoring post.
9.3 The potential reading shall be in fact negative (Cathodic) potential (read in the
digital meter as positive because of reversing the terminal connections of
permanent half-cell and pipeline connection.)
9.4 The adjustment through resistor in Junction box will be done till we achieve
potential reading of 0.9 Volts (900 mV) as against protection criteria Negative
(Cathodic) potential of at least – 0.85 Volts (-850 mV) at end point with this
setting pipe-to-soil potential at start will be recorded.
9.5 After the setting note down the current output of each anode after is measured use
respective shunt.
9.6 After 24 hours polarizing of the pipeline, pipe-to-soil potential at all the
monitoring location shall be recorded and would form the part of the final report.
