Zealand census.

In the last 2013 census, the number
of Indian-origin people in the country
was 155,000, which has increased in
2018 census to 221,916 on census night
March 6, 2018.
New Zealand is all set to hit the
magical number of 5 million people
in 2020.
This census (2013-2018) had
witnessed the fastest increase in the
population ever in its history, largely
owing to the high rate of immigration.
On average, the population grew by
about 2.1 percent a year since the 2013
annual average growth between 2006
and 2013 (0.7 percent).
The higher growth rate is consistent
with higher net migration (259,000
in the five years ended 30 June 2018
compared with 59,000 in the seven
years ended 30 June 2013).
The 2018 Census usually resident
population count was 4,699,755 –
up 457,707 from the 2013 Census
(4,242,048).
Historical census data shows that
New Zealand’s population reached 1
million by 1911, surpassed 2 million by
1956, 3 million by 1976, and 4 million by
2006. The 2018 Census usually resident
population count of 4,699,755 and
relatively high net migration suggests
New Zealand’s population will reach 5
million in the near future.
For cities and districts, 2018 Census
results showed:
Auckland is home to one-third of
New Zealand’s population, with its
census usually resident population
count topping 1.5 million (1,571,718).
Christchurch city’s population
(369,006) bounced back after
experiencing a decrease following the
2011 earthquakes – up from 341,469 in
2013 and 348,456 in 2006.
Queenstown-Lakes (6.8 percent)
and Selwyn districts (6.3 percent) had
the highest annual average population
growth rates between the 2013 and
2018 Censuses.
The youngest median age (32.2
years) of the cities and districts was
recorded in Hamilton city, home of
Waikato University.
The Chinese population,
however, remained the largest
Asian ethnic group with the
number of people residents on
the census-night March 6, 2018,
at 231,387.
Indian population remained a
close-second at 221,916 on the
census night.

It excludes overseas visitors

and 48.4 per cent respectively.
The Chinese population on the
other hand has been growing 40.5
and 16.2 per cent respectively.
In that regard, the Chinese
population has grown much
faster, almost doubling-up from
the previous census period (2006-
2013) to grow at 34.98 per cent.
Following the current growth
patterns of the both Indians and
Chinese, it is estimated that the
Indian population will outstrip
Chinese as the largest Asian
ethnic group by the next census
in 2023, unless there is any major
disruption.

Census 2018: Hindi slips in most spoken

language list, Fiji-Hindi speakers rise

Z Census 2018 has brought
the unwelcome news where
Hindi has slipped from the
earlier fourth to now fifth position in
terms of language spoken by number
of people in New Zealand.
This is despite a literal increase
in the number of Hindi-speakers in
census 2018.
According to earliest census report
released on Monday, September 23,
the number of Hindi speaking people
was 69,471 (or 1.5 per cent of the
total population).
This is the slowest ever increase in
the number of Hindi speakers (a mere
4.76 per cent), at least since 2001.
In 2013 the number of Hindi
speakers increased by 48.7 per
cent, whereas in 2006 there was a
whopping 96.0 per cent increase.
Hindi has lost its place to the
Northern Chinese (including
Mandarin) language which was
spoken by 95,253 people (or 2.0
percent of total population). In 2013
census, Northern Chinese speakers
were 52,263 people as opposed to
number of Hindi speakers, which
were 66,309 people
In the 2013 census, Hindi was
spoken by 66,309 people (or 1.7
per cent), thus suggesting a paltry
increase of just around 3000 people
in the last five years – a fact that is
likely to raise some apprehensions,
Indian population and the number of
people born in India. The number of
people born in India increased from
1.7 per cent in 2013 to 2.5 per cent
in 2018.
Hindi’s loss is Fiji-Hindi’s
gain
As opposed to a negligible increase
in the number of Hindi-language
speakers, there was whopping 1501.2
per cent increase in the number of
Fiji-Hindi speakers.
In 2018 census, 26, 805 people
identified Fiji-Hindi language as a
language that they prefer to speak, as
opposed to mere 1674 people in the
2013 census.
This phenomenal increase in the
number of Fiji-Hindi speakers does
not corroborate with a comparable
level of increase in the Fiji-Indian
population in the last five years.
It is likely that the people who
had earlier mentioned Hindi as their
spoken language had changed their
preference from Hindi-language.
How other Indian-
languages fared in census
2018?
Meanwhile, other Indian-language
speaking groups such as Tamil,
Telugu, Punjabi, and Gujarati
witnessed an proportionate increase
in the number of speakers of

Most people (84.1 percent) stated

used to fill in all missing values.
This has improved the quality and
completeness of the 2018 Census
ethnicity data. However, be cautious
when comparing 2018 Census
data with earlier censuses, as the
earlier censuses include missing
values (for example, not stated, or
unidentifiable ethnicities).

can and do have more than one

for their hard work and participation
in the Hindi school and the event.

on Saturday,
September 14, hosted
an event celebrating
Hindi Diwas in
the presence of the
Indian community in
Newlands.
“Vibrancy, colour, pride, confidence
and success are some of the many
words that describe Wellington’s Hindi
Day celebrations,” Kashmir Kaur,
Chairperson of the Wellington Hindi
School said.
“Wellington Hindi School is also
the Wellington Airport 2019 Regional
Community Awards finalist,” Ms Kaur
added.
Hindi ‘Diwas’ or Hindi Day is
celebrated every year on September 14
around the world to mark the adoption
of the Devanagari script that is used
to write Hindi, by the Constituent
Assembly of the government of India.
Hindi is the one of the most spoken
languages in New Zealand and is
spoken by around 500 million people
worldwide, making it the fourth most
spoken language globally.
Hindi Day in Wellington was attended
by the distinguished guests from the
Indian and Fiji High Commission, Bank
of Baroda, Newlands Primary School,
Mayur Dance Academy, International
Muslim Association of NZ, National
Party MP and friends of Wellington
Hindi School.

Ms Kaur said.
“The diverse attendees were also
enlightened by Sunita Narayan’s award-
winning play on Girmit (the Indentured
labour system) called ‘Yaadein’
commemorating the 140 years of Indian
arrival in Fiji.
“Six of the school’s senior students
representing the cultural diversity of
New Zealand and the preservation of
Avadhi and Bhojpuri languages of
India, told the story of the indentured
labour system in about 15 minutes,” Ms
Kaur added.
The event tailed off with a networking
session over delectable Indian snacks
provided by the Hindi school parents.

one-day National Hindi Language
Workshop was held at Papatoetoe
High School on Saturday, September
21, jointly organised by Hindi Language and
Culture Trust of New Zealand, Bhartiya Bhasha
Evan Shodh Sansthan, Teach Hindi NZ and
New Zealand Hindi Teachers Association.
The daylong workshop received
overwhelming support from the Hindi
community and others alike right from
Christchurch, Wellington, Whanganui,
Palmerston North, Hamilton and greater
Auckland.
Present at the workshop were Minister of
Ethnic Communities and Associate Minister for
Education Jenny Salesa, National MPs Nikki
Kaye, Kanwaljit Bakshi, Hon Consul of India
Bhav Dhillon and ten other speakers.
The Keynote speaker at the event Dr Todd
Nachowitz from Otago University highlighted
Hindi being the fourth most commonly spoken
language in New Zealand (fifth now as per
Census 2018) and the third most widely spoken
language in Auckland.
Dr Nachowitz also emphasised on the
potential danger of extinction of the language
if community and heritage languages are not
supported and called upon the government to
include Hindi into the National Curriculum.
Maree Jurissen from Ministry of Education
presented data on the findings of Ethnic
Community Education conversations
conducted by the government at the beginning
of the year. National MP Nikki Kaye spoke on
the importance of learning a second language
and the heritage languages.
Ms Kaye further said it is important to learn
the languages of the migrants, with regards to
the Te Reo Maori language under the Treaty of
Waitangi.
The organisers also invited the torchbearers
of the Tongan language to speak about the
growth of their language in New Zealand.
“The pioneer curriculum developers of
Samoan Language, Vavao Fetui and Tongan
language, Maata Fusitua shared their language
journey into New Zealand Curriculum in a
very emotional session,” Satya Dutt, President
of Hindi Language and Culture Trust of New
Zealand said.
“Reiterating Jenny Salesa and Kanwaljit
Bakshi’s call that our language and culture is
our identity that reflects our past, our present
and resonates into the future accomplishments
of our generations ahead,” Mr Dutt added.
Dr Netram Sharma, a retired Principal
Curriculum Officer, Ministry of Education, Fiji
delivered a session on Teaching and Learning of
Hindi Language and Challenges in Developing
Hindi Curriculum.
Longtime advocates for Hindi language,
Sunita Narayan, Dr Pushpa Wood and Suman
Kapoor also facilitated workshop sessions for
awareness and creating capabilities for teaching
and learning for Hindi.
“As a result of this workshop, we have
formed the ‘National Hindi Language Sabha’
to continue on the work done so far and to
undertake the promotion, learning and teaching
of Hindi language towards National Curriculum
Framework,” Mr Dutt said.
The Papatoetoe High School is also offering
Hindi classes to Year 9 and 10 students and call
upon to include Hindi in NCEA levels 1-3 to
meet the needs for learning pathways of the
students.
During the workshop, the attendees- were
split into three groups to discuss upon topics
that focused on role and importance of Inter-
generational Language Learning in NZ context,
the role of media to promote Hindi language
and teaching capability of Hindi language and
learning outcomes for students.
The following were the key points of the
discussion:

young children
• role of ethnic media in engaging youth in
language acquisition and maintenance
• teaching competencies, curriculum
knowledge, the commitment of teachers,
increasing the reading and writing of Hindi
script, Hindi as a conversational language
and history of India
The group discussions concluded thus:
• need for a strategic approach to building
capacity and capability of Hindi language
and other Indian languages teachers
• need for a consistent and coordinated
approach to promoting Hindi through various
means including parents at home
• parents need to take more ‘hands-on’
approach and make a commitment to
working with their children at home and
support the work being carried out by the
language teachers
• need to develop a curriculum that meets
the need of Indian people in New Zealand
and can be adopted by all language schools
throughout the country
• call for a need for NCEA Levels 1-3 exam
papers to prepare for Hindi learners to be
included in NZQA. This will assist the
student in attaining credits for their career
pathways
• quality of language teaching needs to be
lifted and aligned to the teaching and learning
priorities of the New Zealand education
system.

framework as a matter of urgency supported
by training and professional development
packages.

China – not many people would
expect that there has been a small,
invisible community of the India-
born Chinese people living quietly in
India, for at least hundreds of years.
And expecting members of such
a community – a living example
of how the processes of migration
influence their life-experiences of
engaging with multiple cultures – to
be living quietly in New Zealand for
the last two decades, was in itself
eventful.
Yamshya Lee-sands, 50, an India-
born Chinese descent mum, has been
living in Auckland with her Kiwi
husband and two boys since 2001
when she first emigrated from India.
She is a living epitome of reflecting
multiple identities - and a mixture of
Chinese and Indian heritage that not
many people, even in India, would
be much cognizant about.
“Cherishing multiple cultural
identities,” was her apt reply to the
Indian Weekender’s query of what
she thinks of her mixed Chinese-

used their wealth to influence political actions to expand their fortunes at the expense of the common
citizens.
Meanwhile in the developing world, the corrupt politicians serve the interests of the large
business organisations at the expense of the masses; again, adding to the already existing disparity.
As Piketty has argued in his magnus opus, Capital in the Twenty First Century, the share of top
income percentile in total income rose from 10 per cent to 20 per cent during the period 1970-2010
in the Anglo-Saxon countries.
A similar trend has played out even in the developing world.
The rising disparities in the neoliberal world have been accentuated with the advent
of globalisation.
While a globalised, interconnected world has increased everyone’s wealth over time, it has not
benefitted everyone equally.
According to the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem, trade is beneficial mainly for people who own
factors with which the national economy is relatively well endowed and hurts individuals who own
factors that are relatively scarce.
Therefore, unskilled workers in a capital-rich country, for instance, will have obvious
discontentment with the system and feel that only the interests of the elites are being fulfilled. To
these segments of the population, authoritarian leaders and authoritarian forms of society seem to
be the only ones that could effectively iron out the problems of free markets.
On the other hand, the reservations of the anti-liberals on the right are more related with the
changing social dynamics it has caused.
They argue that the foundational premise of liberalism i.e. offering people the liberty to choose
their own path in life is shaping humans into separate, autonomous and non-related selves.
The pursuit of profit erodes the will to embed in social relations and build communities.
The separation from community disrupts cherished beliefs and traditions and creates social
fissures, which has led to widespread discontentment.
Even though the rise of populist leaders signals an affirmation to these views; by no means are
the ideas of liberalism and liberal democracy dead as many critics claim.
There is significant evidence to support its resilience.
The vote against Boris Johnson in the UK Parliament for his attempt to subvert democratic
means and exit the EU is a case in point. Across the Atlantic, US citizens voted Democrats into the
House of Representatives signalling that they would not even award Trump unfettered control of
democratic institutions.
Even further across the Pacific, citizens of Hong Kong are displaying exceptional exuberance
against a regime trying to subvert their democratic rights.
The faith with liberalism also cannot be said to be fully lost.
The world sees bursts of support for the liberal view through movements like #MeToo and the
student rallies against climate change.
A radical transformation in the way society functions is, thus, probably not anywhere near the
horizon as many would like to predict.
But it must be recognised that there is simmering discontentment against the status quo and the
world needs to take the interests of those left behind into consideration through more broad-based
developmental mechanisms.

s far as optics go, it can’t get bigger
than Howdy, Modi! – adream win-

world’s two biggest democracies, with the pair
of leaders exchanging endless warm fuzzies

beyond just optics.
It will have implications on a whole spectrum
of ongoing and future developments in world
affairs; the United States’ own presidential
elections next year as well as the important
assembly elections in key Indian states next
month.
And this is not to mention the strong signal
from the two leaders on their resolve to combat
radical Islamic terrorism – as clearly spelled out
by President Trump in his speech. He received
a 15-second standing ovation from the nearly
60,000-strong crowd as he paused for effect
after making that pronouncement.

And he did it with great elan – getting on Mr
Modi’s side and heaping praise repeatedly to the
delight of the audience and Mr Modi returning
the favour, at times cloyingly, concluding with
“Ab kibaar Trump sarkaar.” One could be
forgiven if they were to think it was an election
rally.
While Mr Trump publicly reposed faith in
the Indian Prime Minister for sorting out issues
with Pakistan, he later renewed his offer to
mediate but only if India wanted to – something
that India has firmly but politely refused to date.
Not that the Trump administration would have
any issues with that.
Trade-wise, the two leaders announced mega
investment projects and joint collaborations
in military hardware and weapons systems
production. Both leaders were gung-ho on
cross-investment initiatives, which would be
great news for two way trade and economic
relations between the two countries
On the geopolitical stage, the messaging
was equally clear: the US had found a strong
and abiding friend in India to take on together
inimical geopolitical forces, particularly from
authoritarian regimes that wanted to muscle
in economically especially using less than fair
trade practices, territorially and militarily.
Without mentioning it so many words, the
leaders made it clear through sheer optics and
the sense of bonhomie between them (hugs and
holding hands as well as repeatedly making
statements of reposing faith in each other) that
this was the biggest visible boost to the Indo
Pacific alignment.
(This message about the Indo Pacific
alignment should be hopefully enough for
certain Australian academics who have recently
interpreted the ‘Indo’ in Indo Pacific to mean
Indonesia instead of India).

in the next little while in the Indian Ocean
region. In subsequent exercises, the Australian
forces will also join in. This will undoubtedly
the most definitive display to date of the Indo
Pacific alignment.
While they made global security, trade, the
economy and leadership the subject of their
talk at the event, both avoided reference to
climate change – an extremely sensitive issue
with Mr Trump, but which Mr Modi is more
attuned to. Aides on both sides obviously must
have decided to leave it aside, which is indeed
disappointing.
However, that topic was brought centerstage
with gusto at the UN in New York just days
later by a sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg
from Sweden, who has since set the internet
on fire much to the chagrin of some people,
some of whom have spewed characteristic hate
messages, so typical of online dissenters – but
that’s another story.
Prime Minister Modi left it to his Foreign
Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to deal with the

specifics on Pakistan after the Howdy, Modi!
event. He famously went on record saying while
India was ready for any talks with Pakistan, it
was firm in not holding talks with ‘Terroristan’.
That summed up India’s messaging on its
predicament with dealing with Pakistan.
Never before in the history of independent
India has the country come out so strongly
internationally. India is no longer a weak-
voiced pushover in international matters,
particularly those in which its sovereignty and
the integrity of its international borders – and
it will no longer be cowed down by anybody
or any pressure when it comes to dealing with
these issues, no matter what resources at its
disposal it might need to deploy.

four days after a problem is first detected. Then it
would move to the main settings menu for 15 more
days. After that, it gets pushed away to Settings ->
General -> About.

follow proper safety and repair procedures and could
result in improper function or issues with display
quality or safety. Apple displays are designed to fit
precisely within the device," the company said in a
post.
