Study Study
• Homework is sent at the beginning of the week and due at end
of the week.
• Homework will be checked for completion, but not graded.
• Homework includes daily reading for 15 minutes to help
improve their reading, writing and spelling! Second graders
really need this practice! Students also benefit from listening to
reading.
• Homework also includes math and word work.
• Please encourage and help your child to complete their
assignments.
Take Home Journal
Includes information such as:
○ Daily warm-ups (what your child is practicing in
math)
○ Important reminders
○ Notes from teacher

Please make sure you are checking this journal every night. If journals
are returned without a signature when a note has been written, I will
send an email letting you know it is there.

It is very important to us that our students know they have a role in

the open communication with their parents!
Grading and Reporting
Chromebooks

• Every 2nd grade teacher has a class set!

• Will be used for standardized testing, during
math/reading centers, and for inquiry projects!
• Teachers are able to monitor student use.
Reading Comprehension
Grades on the report card for reading are measuring student
comprehension of the text.

Students are asked to:

• Think critically about the text
• Find proof using the text
• Show understanding through writing and discussion
• Reread in order to come to a deeper understanding of the text

We work on comprehension and foundational skills as a part of the

guided reading group.
Foundational Skills
Foundational skills are early reading skills that students need to
master before becoming fluent readers.

● Phonological awareness- segment sounds in words, blend

sounds together to make a word, substitute sounds to make
new words
● Phonics- matching letters to sounds, separating a written
word into individual sounds
● Word Recognition- read many words that cannot be
decoded by sight with automaticity
● Fluency- read a grade level text with appropriate rate,
expression, and comprehension
Math Thinking
Math instruction focuses on:
• Thinking Deeply
• Integrating Previous Learning With New Concepts
• Showing HOW They Know Through Explanation
• Learning Through Collaboration

Students are taught a variety of strategies for getting to the

correct answer. This helps students become more fluent with
their math thinking, and increases their ability to recognize
when they have the wrong answer. They will do this by:
• analyzing what they already know
• applying a strategy that makes sense
• reflecting on their work to determine if their solution is
reasonable
Math Strategy
Showing a strategy for basic fact 2+3= _____:
“I know that 2+2 equals 4,
so 2+3 is one more, so it equals 5.”
STUDENT LEARNING
