Did you know, that the most accurate clocks today slip by only one second every 30 million years?
Atomic clocks, also known as primary clocks, are the most precise clocks in the world. The clock
uses an atomic resonance frequency standard as its counter.
All clocks operate using two main components - first, something that creates a regular periodic
event, and the second is a device that will count, accumulate and display those events. In case of
an atomic clock, resonance frequencies of atoms is used as a resonator (things that naturally
oscillate at some frequencies), specifically Cesium-133.
The modern measurement system uses second as the base unit for time-keeping. The
International System of Units (SI) defines one second as the time it takes a Cesium-133 atom at
the ground state to oscillate exactly 9,192,631,770 times.
Atomic clocks are designed to detect this frequency, most of them today using atomic fountains;
a cloud of atoms that is tossed upwards by lasers in the Earth's gravitational field. If one could see
an atomic fountain, it would resemble a water fountain.
