language learning and identifies and accurately explains some parts of
speech.
Topics:
A reflection on linguistics and parts of speech
Learning strategy stage – TBA
Task 1 of the Task-Based Approach (TBA) – A brief reflection on
linguistics and identifying the eight parts of speech
Activities:
Linguistic is the main field of the study of any language, so in this
course, we will have a close approach on how the English language
works in terms of its forms and functions. Therefore, for this initial
activity, please perform the following steps:
1. Introduce yourself in the forum Task 1 in the Collaborative Learning
Environment, be sure your profile is updated with an academic
suitable picture of you, browse all environments in the classroom,
and accept the Course rules and conditions in the Initial Information
Environment.
2. In the Knowledge Environment, in Unit 1 contents find the text “An
Introduction to Linguistics and Language Studies” by McCabe
(2011). After reading it, answer the following questions with your
own words:
a. How do you compare the quotation from Wallace Chafe at
the beginning of the chapter with the purpose of linguistics?
b. Why do you think some people approach the study of
linguistics with apprehensiveness? Is this your case? Explain.
c. Is linguistics about correctness in language use? Explain.
d. What are the names of the greatest contributors to linguistics
field? How would you label each of them? For example,
Ferdinand de Saussure, the father of modern linguistics.
3. In any language, we find eight (8) different parts of speech: noun,
verb, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and
interjection.
a. Choose three parts of speech and explain them in terms of
definition, types, and examples. You would rather choose
those parts of speech you are less familiar with. If you wish,
you can use the “Glossary of English Grammar” by Leech
(2006) included in the Unit 1 contents for your search.
b. Propose two complex sentences on your own and identify as
many parts of speech as possible in them. You can do this
using a diagram or a chart. Be sure the sentences are created
by you, and not paraphrased or copied from a source of yours.
Remember that if a copy is detected (plagiarism), you will get
zero (0) points in this initial activity.
4. Make a video using your webcam to present parts 1 and 2 of this
guide (that is, your self-introduction and answers to questions about
linguistics). If you wish, you can support your video with slides, but
the use of a webcam to see your face is mandatory. Be careful in
regards to the correct use of grammar and pronunciation. Your video
shouldn’t be longer than 4 minutes. Paste the link of your video in
the forum and in the final document. The link must be public, so
anyone with the link must be able to see the video.
5. At the end of the document, you must include the references to your
sources with APA style. Remember that references are not just a list
of links.
