1. Two identical cylinders each weighing 500 N are placed in a trough as shown in fig.
Determine the reactions developed at contact points A, B, C and D. Assume all points of
contact are smooth.

2. A ladder weighing 100 N is to be kept in the position shown in fig. resting on a smooth
floor and leaning on a smooth wall. Determine the horizontal force required at floor level
to prevent it from slipping when a man weighing 700N is at 2m above floor level.

3. The frictionless pulley A shown in Fig, is supported by two bars AB and AC which are
hinged at B and C to a vertical wall. The flexible cable hinged at D, goes over the pulley
and supports a load of 2OkN at G. The angle made by various members of the system is as
shown in the figure. Determine the forces in the bars AB and AC. Neglect the size of the
pulley.

4. A bar AB 12 m long rests in horizontal position as shown in Fig. on two smooth planes.
Find distance x at which a load P = 100 N is to be placed to keep the bar in equilibrium.
Neglect weight of bar.

6. A man supports a pole 20 kg as shown in fig. Find tension and reaction at A.

7. A roller of radius r=300 mm and weighing 2000N is to be pulled over a curb of height 150
mm, as shown in fig. by applying a horizontal force F applied to the end of a string wound
around the circumference of the roller. Find the magnitude of force F required to start the
roller move over the curb. What is the least pull F through the centre of the wheel to just
turn the roller over the curb?

8. A uniform bar AB of length 6 m and of negligible weight is hinged at A and supported at


end B by a string as shown in Fig. Find angle θ for equilibrium of bar.

9. A 500 N cylinder of 1 m diameter is loaded between the cross pieces which makes an angle
of 60° with each other and are pinned at C. Determine the tension in the horizontal rope
DE, assuming a smooth floor.

10. A bar 12 m- long and of negligible weight is acted upon by forces as shown in Fig.
Determine angle θ for equilibrium of bar.

13. A homogeneous bar 6 m long is supported by rollers at A and B and by a cable at C. The
mass of bar is 50 kg. Determine reactions and tension.

15. Two bars AC and BC are hinged together at C as shown in the Fig. the ends A and B are
hinged to the wall. Find the axial forces in the bars.
16. Four forces of magnitude 10N, 20N, 30N and 40N are acting respectively along the four
side of a square ABCD as shown in Fig. below. Determine the magnitude, direction and
position of the resultant force.

17. Two smooth spheres each of radius 100mm and weight 100N, rest in a horizontal channel
having vertical walls, the distance between which is 360mm. Find the reactions at the
points of contacts A, B, C and D shown in the Fig \
18. A semi – cylinder of radius R and weight W is placed over two small cylinders each of
radius r and weight W/16 inside a glass box as shown in figure. Find the maximum value
of r, as a function of R, for which the force exerted on the side walls does not exceed a
limiting value of 0.4 W.

19. A rectangular plate is acted upon by the forces shown. This system is to be replaced with
a single equivalent force.
a) For α= 40°, specify the magnitude and the line of action of the equivalent force.
b) Specify the value of α if the line of action of the equivalent force is to intersect line CD
300 mm to the right of D. (15)

20. Two identical rollers each of weight 500 N, are kept in a right angle frame ABC having
negligible weight as shown. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the reactions induced at the
points of contact P, Q, R and S. Also find the reactions at B & C.
