The Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo
is celebrated during the third
week of January to honor the
Santo Niňo, a representation of
the baby Jesus. It is known for its
eccentric and colourful vibe,
costumes, and dances which just
keeps on getting better year after
year. The festival welcomes both
the religious and the non-
religious folks as it is not only a
celebration of religion, but also of
culture and of the beauty that the
place has to offer.

ATI-ATIHAN The Ati-Atihan festival lasts for a


week, and culminates on the third

JANUARY FESTIVALS

The Sinulog Festival, which is Sinulog


known to be the grandest festival
in the country, is held on the Festival
third Sunday of January to
celebrate the locals’ acceptance of
Cebu City
Christianity. It is also a
celebration of the Santo Niňo, a
statue of which was given to the
Rajah of Cebu by Ferdinand
Magellan when they accepted the
religion.

This festival lasts for 9 days, and


culminates with the Sinulog
Grand Parade, usually attended
by local and foreign tourists.
Those who are not able to fly to
Cebu to witness the spectacle may
still watch the event since, for the
past 3 years, the event was live
broadcasted and webcasted.
Panagbenga Festival, sometimes
known as the “Blooming Flowers
Festival”, is a month-long yearly
flower festival happening in
Baguio City every February. The
term “Panagbenga” comes from
a Kankanaey term meaning
“season of blooming”, and this
festival reflects the history,
traditions and values of Baguio
and the Cordilleras.

The festival was created as a


tribute to the city’s abundance of
flowers as well as to rise above
the devastation of the Luzon
earthquake in 1990. While the
festival lasts about one month,
the highlight is the Grand Float
Parade which features a PANAGBENGA
marching band and floats

INTERNATIONAL The Philippine International
Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is the
HOT AIR longest-running sports aviation
event in Asia, gathering

BANANA
The Banana Festival is a two-
day affair that is held annually

abundance of bananas. It
showcases the different

street dancing competition and
beauty pageant. Festivities

held in honor of the patron, St.
Joseph.
Moriones Festival is an
annual event held in
Marinduque during the Holy
Week to celebrate its
religion and culture. The
word “Moriones” came from
the word “mask” which is
worn by the people who re-
enact the life of St.
Longinus, the half-blind
centurion whose eyesight
came back when he drove a
spear on the side of Jesus’
body. Locals think of joining
the festival as their “panata”
or devotion, a way to show MORIONES
sacrifice and thanksgiving to

APRIL FESTIVALS

BANGUS The Bangus Festival celebrates


the bountiful harvest of bangus
FESTIVAL in Dagupan, Pangasinan. It is
usually held on the 30th of
Dagupan, Pangasinan April to the 1st of May,
highlighted with parades and
dances of locals in striking
bangus-inspired outfits. The
festival is also that time of the
year where bangus growers
and producers compete for the
title of having the heaviest and
the longest bangus in the
province.
Highlighting the skills of the
Dagupenos are the Deboning-
Competition, Bangus-Eating
Competition, and the Cooking
Competition, where the
professionals and the non-
professionals compete as to
who gets to cook the most
delicious dish.
Magayon Festival is a month-
long celebration happening
every month of May in Albay
Province. This festival is
meant to honor Mayon
Volcano’s beauty, with
Magayon meaning “always
beautiful to look at.” It is also a
platform to showcase the
province’s culinary fare, native
industries, and natural
wonders.

One of the highlights of this


event is the retelling of the

Magayon popular legend of the Mayon


Volcano called “Daragang

Pistay Dayat Festival is

Dayat means “Sea Festival,” as Lingayen, Pangasinan
it is a thanksgiving festival for
the year’s abundant harvest
from the sea. The festival
offers multiple activities such
as trade and tourism fair,
dance sport/orchestra
competition, variety shows,
sportsfest and sandscaping
competition. These activities
are meant to engage each one
from another.

It is also worth mentioning


that the festival usually ends
with a communal clean-up.
This is a prompt to the
community’s accomplishment
over the year and the
significance of responsible
aquaculture.
The Pintados-Kasadyaan
Festival is an annual
festivity held in the City of
Tacloban every June 29. It
is a cultural-religious
festival that pays homage to
Tacloban’s patron saint,
Señor Santo Niño de
Tacloban. It started as
Pintados Festival in 1986
which showcased the body
painting traditions of the
ancient tattoed “pintados”
warriors. In 1996, it was
merged with Kasadyaan Pintados -
Festival. Kasadyaan, a
Bisaya word means Kasadyaan
merriment.

SARANGANI
BAY FESTIVAL
Sarangani Province Sarangani Bay Festival, also
known to the locals as
Sarbay Fest, is a two-day
summer weekend held
annually in the Province of
Sarangani. The festival is
held on every third week of
May. It features sports
competition, nightly parties
and lots of other activities.
The festival is probably the
biggest event in the
Southern Philippines.
The Sandugo Festival is an
annual historical
celebration held every July
that takes place every year
in Tagbilaran City on the
island of Bohol in the
Philippines. This festival
commemorates the Treaty
of Friendship between Datu
Sikatuna, a chieftain in
Bohol, and Spanish
conquistador Miguel López
de Legazpi. This 16th-
century peace treaty
SANDUGO occurred on March 16, 1565
through a blood compact or
FESTIVAL "sandugo".

JULY FESTIVALS

Kinis Festival is celebrated


annually every last week of
July coinciding with the
KINIS FESTIVAL
foundation day celebration
Panganiban
of the town of Panganiban.
Kinis or hard-shelled crabs
are the primary product of
the town. The festival is a
form of thanking God for the
bountiful harvest of
agricultural and marine
products especially mud-
crabs which are said to be
the meatiest and delicious
among the crustacean
species. The highlights of the
festival include the street
dance competition, crab
racing and trade fare that
aims to promote the town’s
crab industry.
Cordova Dinagat Festival is
held around August 10 to
15. The celebration pays
tribute to the locals of
Cordova, Cebu and their
source of living. Situated
near the waters of Cebu
Strait, fishing gave life to
the community. In fact,
Cordova, dubbed by many
as the “Bakasi Capital of
Cebu”, named its festival
the Dinagat-Bakasi after
the large numbers of eels
found in the city.

AUGUST FESTIVALS

KADAYAWAN
The Kadayawan Festival is
FESTIVAL an annual festival in the city
of Davao in the Philippines.

Dabawenyo word "dayaw",
meaning good, valuable,
superior or beautiful. The
festival is a celebration of
life, a thanksgiving for the
gifts of nature, the wealth of
culture, the bounties of
harvest and serenity of

week of August.

offerings to their divine
protectors are the
highlights of this ritual.
Peñafrancia Festival is held
every September 19. A nine-
day fiesta honors Our Lady
of Peñafrancia in Naga City,
Bicol. The celebrations
revolve around a statue of
the Lady, which is carried by
male devotees from its
shrine to the Naga
Cathedral. The nine days
that follow are Naga's
biggest party - parades,
sports events, exhibitions,

SEPTEMBER FESTIVALS

DIYANDI
The Diyandi Festival of Iligan
is the official title of the city’s
FESTIVAL
month-long celebration. This Iligan City
celebration is to promote
their cultural identity and to
honor their city’s patron
saint. The council of Iligan
City proposed a resolution to
establish Diyandi Festival as
the tourism Name and. In
2004, the council approved
the resolution and this is
Diyandi Festival born.

Today, the festival is more


developed and approved into
more festive, colorful and
more cultural celebration.
The word “diyandi” becomes
the trademark of Iligan's
extended celebration.
The name MassKara Festival is
taken from the words ‘mass’ which
means crowd, and ‘kara’ which
means for face, so MassKara
means crowded for face or masks
for many faces. MassKara was
conceived by the Art Association of
Bacolod (AAB), the intention of
which was to creatively organize a
street dance parade thus getting
away from a “meaningless” civic-
military parade.

People celebrate the MassKara


Festival by wearing smiling-faced
masks, colorful costumes, and MASSKARA
unique accessories, while parading
and dancing on the streets of FESTIVAL
Bacolod. This festival contains a Bacolod City
message about being happy despite
being in the toughest state of life.

The Hermosa festival, also

October 12 is also declared as a

Zamboanga.
Higantes Festival is celebrated
every 22 and 23 November in
the city of Angono, Province of
Rizal, to honor San Clemente,
the patron saint of fishermen.
The festival features a parade of
hundreds of higantes, papier-
mâché giants. Higantes are
puppets rendered as man or
woman in various costumes;
their face gives a commanding
look, their hands on the waist.
The festival’s origin can be
traced back to the period of
Spanish colonial rule when, as
Angono was a ruled hacienda,
HIGANTES celebrations were prohibited,
except for one festival per year.

Kahilwayan is an Ilonggo term

that means freedom or

Barbara's cultural festival depicts
the role of the Ilonggos in the
Sta. Barbara, Iloilo
historic uprising against Spain. It
showcases through a dance
drama the series of events that
led to the open declaration of the
revolution in the Visayas that's
now known as the ‘Cry of Santa
Barbara’.

Barbara on November 17, 1898
signalled the start of the rebellion
against Spain in the Visayas and

It is a testimony of the bravery

The Sinadya sa Halaran Festival is
the joint festival of the City of
Roxas and the Province of Capiz
and is a fusion of two festivals –
"Sinadya" (City) and "Halaran"
(Province) which literally means
joy in sharing and thanksgiving. It
is a mixed festival in the sense that
it is celebrated for both cultural
and religious reasons. It is
celebrated every first weekend of
December , usually 4 to 8, in
commemoration of the Feast of
the Virgin of the Immaculate
Concepcion who also happens to
be the patroness of the City of

DECEMBER FESTIVALS

SIMBALLAY
FESTIVAL Simballay is an annual
festivity of the
Nabunturan Municipality of
Nabunturan coined from
a Mansaka word
meaning, “Togetherness,
sharing and
thanksgiving for a
bountiful harvest.”
Simballay became a
tradition to the
Nabunturanons every
second week of
December, the month of
family togetherness and
sharing of gifts and
blessings. It was also a
symbol of honoring
indigenous people.
