Bevel Gear Design

Introduction
• Sometimes, power is to be transmitted in an angular
direction. For such purpose, another type of gear-
drive, called as bevel gear drive can be employed.
• teeth are cut on conical surfaces.
• The tooth dimensions are specified by the large end
of teeth.
• In calculating bearing loads, the central section
dimensions and forces can be adopted.
• Bevel gears are made in pairs only and not in
interchangeable sets.
 Classification of bevel gears:
1. Based on shape of teeth such as Straight teeth bevel
gears and curved teeth bevel gears, specified as
spiral bevel gears.
2. Based on the angle between the shaft axes. Shaft
angle.
shaft angle is less than 90 – external gear
shaft angle is greater than 90 – internal gear
shaft angle is 90- crown-gears (mating gear pitch
angles are not 45 degree)
- miter gears( mating gear pitch
angles are 45 degree)
