anti-arthritic
activity of leaves
extracts of
Anthocephalus
indicus
Need for the study
Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. A joint is
area where two bones meet. Arthritis involves the
breakdown of cartilage that also absorbs shock when
pressure is placed on the joint without normal cartilage
the bones rub together causing pain, swelling
(inflammation) stiffness and limited movement.
Nowadays, animal models of rheumatoid arthritis are
used extensively in research on pathogenesis of
inflammatory arthritis and in the pharmaceutical industry
in testing of potential anti-arthritic agents.
Anthocephalus indicus (family rubiaceae). It is a
deciduous tree also known as “Cadamba” locally. The
plant possess anti-diabetic, analgesic, anti-arthritic,
diuretic, antioxidant, hypolipidemic activity also reported
to have anti-microbial and non-healing activity.
The present study is designed to evaluate the effects of
above plant leaves on chronic inflammation, i.e.,
Arthritis.

Review of Literature
Anthocephalus indicus (Family Rubiaceae) is
frequently found in all over India also
distributed in China and New Guinea.
It has different distribution and habitat. It
grows best on deep moist alluvial sites.
Native range of Cadamba is Australia, China,
Indonesia and Maharashtra.
Leaf show presence of simple elongated
unicellular trichomes, starch grains, calcium
crystals, phloem in form of ring and oil
globules. Chemical constituents include
cadambine, di-hydro cadambine, iso-hydro
cadambine.
Methods and Materials
The sources of data are:-
 Laboratory experiment on animals.
 Literature survey.
 Books and Journals.
 Internet.

Collection:-
 Collection of plant.
 Identification and authentication of plant by a
Botanist.
 Required drugs and chemicals for research purpose.

Extraction:-
 Shade dried leaves of anthocephalus indicus are to
be extracted successfully through soxhlet’s
apparatus.
Animals used
Albino wistar rats 150-200 gm.
will be used. The animals will
be maintained under controlled
condition of room temperature
and Rh light-dark cycles. The
animals are randomized into
different groups and housed in
sanitized polypropylene cages
containing sterile puddy husk.
Objective of the study
To carry out anti-arthritic activity of leaves
extracts of Anthocephalus indicus on
experimental animals by using following
models.

 Freund’s Adjuvant induced arthritis in rats.

 Formaldehyde induced arthritis.
