STOP AIDS MAKE THE PROMISE

For  the  22nd  +me,  World  AIDS  Day  will  be  held  on  1st  December  2010.  The  
World  Health  Organiza+on,  WHO,  dedicated  this  day  to  raising  awareness  of  
HIV  and  AIDS  in  1987  and  the  first  World  AIDS  Day  was  held  in  1988.

FACTS ON HIV AND AIDS
• Since  1981  more  than  25  million  people  have  died  of  AIDS

• In  2008,    2.7  million  people  worldwide  were  newly  infected  


with  HIV

• In  the  same  year,  about  2  million  people  died  from  AIDS-­‐


related  illnesses

• Worldwide  there  are  about  2.1  million  children  living  with  


HIV,  and  a  total  of  33.4  million  people  in  total.  Out  of  those,  
5.4  million  young  people  from  15  to  24  years  old  are  living  
with  HIV World AIDS
Day 2009-
• There  is  about  one  new  infec+on  every  10  seconds Nigeria
• In  Africa  there  are  about  12  million  orphans  who  lost  their  parents  due  to  AIDS

Ideas for the Campaign


• Wear  the  red  ribbons,  and  mo+vate  others  to  do   • Set  up  an  informa+on  desk  with  material-­‐  flyers,  
the  same   posters,  guidelines  of  HIV  treatment  inside  the  
mall  or  other  public  places
• Sell  those  red  ribbons  to  raise  money  which  could  
be  spent  to  your  na+onal  AIDS  fund • Invite  HIV  posi+ve  pa+ents  to  come  to  you  faculty  
to  carry  out  a  workshop  about  HIV
• Organise  an  event  where  all  students  wear  red  t-­‐
shirts  and  make  a  big  human  ribbon o Students  can  learn  about  HIV  from  the  
pa+ents’  point  of  view
• Organise  a  charity  run  in  which  students  wear  
white  T-­‐shirts  and  red  ribbons • Collaborate  with  other  local  or  na+onal  health  
organiza+ons
• Organise  a  condom  exhibi+on  at  the  university  hall  
to  draw  aSen+on  to  the  campaign • Organize  a  fundraiser  for  local/na+onal/  
interna+onal  HIV/AIDS  organiza+ons
• Ask  a  condom  company  to  donate  condoms  and  
give  them  away  to  the  students  to  inform  them   o For  example,  the  LiSle  Travellers’  HIV/AIDS

WORLD AIDS DAY


The  World  AIDS  Day  is  on  the  1st  of  December,  but  if  you  don’t  have  the  
chance  to  organize  a  campaign  on  that  day,  you  can  s+ll  have  ac+vi+es  on  other  
days  around  the  year.  AIDS  is  not  a  disease  which  should  be  forgoSen  during  the  
other  months,  so  spread  awareness  whenever  it  is  possible!!!
