The Department of Rural and Community Development was established in 2017 to
facilitate economic development in rural areas through a range of programmes, and
to support communities, in urban and rural areas, to become sustainable and desirable
places to live, work and raise families.
The Department has been administering the SuperValu TidyTowns competition since
1995 and in that time has brought the competition from strength to strength. Last
year in 2018 the competition celebrated its 60th anniversary. It continues to be one of
the longest running community initiatives in Ireland and is the single most effective
and important sustainability initiative in Ireland.
Interest in the competition continues to grow with a record number of 918 entries
received this year which represented an increase of 35 on last year’s number, of
that increase 18 were first time entrants so in its seventh decade the competition
continues to attract new communities. In the past 2 years the Department provided
€2.8Million in funding direct to TidyTowns groups to assist them with their initiatives
in sustainability, climate action, waste prevention, biodiversity and a host of other
worthwhile environmental projects.
Funding is available from the Department under a range of schemes to assist rural
and urban communities. Funding schemes include LEADER, CLÁR, Town and Village
Renewal, Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure, Community Enhancement Programme
and as part of Project Ireland 2040 €1 billion Rural Regeneration and Development
Fund to be provided over the period 2019 to 2027. Further details on all these can be
