1. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Perfect continuous tense in the past is part of the verb that is used to
represent an action. In other words, this sentence pattern is used to
announce events that have started and happened in the past, and
now they have not happened again.

Past perfect continuous tense is formed with the auxiliary verb had
and been and the present participle (V-ing). In general, past perfect
continuous tense only occurs in actions such as dynamic or verb
action, not stative verb because generally only dynamic verb has a
continuous form.

2. Characteristic of Past Perfect Continuous Tense

At the beginning it was stated that the past perfect continuous

tense pattern is marked by a verb composed of the auxiliary verb
had been and the present participle (V-ing). This is an important
point to remember. Besides that, another important point to
remember is when the incident occurred.

The use of past perfect continuous tense is similar to the present

perfect continuous tense. The difference lies in the reference time
that occurred. The continuous present perfect has a span of time
from before now to now. While in the past perfect contingent
tense, the time reference is before now until a time earlier than
before now.

One example sentence, for example she has been reading at the
library of Fisip. The same sentence example is used in the present
perfect continuous tense discussion. Without a description of
time, there are two ways to express sentences in English. That she
has been reading at the library of Fisip or she had been reading at
the library of Fisip.

Which one is true? What makes it different? This can be

distinguished by when the statement is stated.

For example, the statement was revealed when the incident was
still ongoing / she was still reading, so the pattern used was the
Present Perfect Continuous Tense. However, if the activities
carried out have not taken place, for example, the statement is
expressed at night, then the pattern used is Past Perfect
Continuous Tense.
3. The Formula Past Perfect Continuous Tense

As in the formation of other complete sentences, a sentence

consists of at least the subject and predicate (verb). So, the most
important part of past perfect continuous tense is the subject and
verb formed by the auxiliary verb had been and the present
participle.

Sentences with past perfect continuous patterns can be arranged

using the past perfect continuous tense formula like the following.

Just like with other continuous tense patterns, past perfect

continuous tense also only occurs in dynamic verb actions.
Because only dynamic verb has a continuous verb form. Whereas
in the stative verb, generally it does not have a continuous form.
